How to Set Up Automatic Bitrate for YouTube Live Streaming

OBS can lower its sending bitrate during network congestion. Learn how to enable dynamic bitrate, choose a YouTube-recommended starting profile, and test the stream.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For an OBS stream, enable Settings → Advanced → Network → Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta). OBS can lower the bitrate it sends when your connection is congested, which may reduce dropped frames at the cost of picture quality. YouTube’s automatic detection is different: it detects encoder settings, including resolution and frame rate by default, but your encoder still sets the outgoing bitrate. This guide covers that sending bitrate—not adaptive playback delivered to viewers.

What “automatic bitrate” means in YouTube Live

There are two separate behaviors that can sound like automatic bitrate. YouTube Live Control Room automatically detects encoder settings, with resolution and frame-rate detection enabled by default. OBS’s dynamic bitrate feature responds to network congestion by lowering the bitrate it sends. It does not automatically change your stream resolution, and it does not fix the underlying network problem.

YouTube’s encoder-setting detection Detection of encoder settings, including resolution and frame rate by default YouTube Live Control Room and encoder workflow Your encoder still has a configured outgoing bitrate. See YouTube’s encoder recommendations.
OBS dynamic bitrate Sending bitrate can decrease when OBS detects network congestion OBS Settings → Advanced → Network Picture quality can fall; the network issue remains, and sudden congestion may increase viewer delay. See OBS connection troubleshooting and the OBS interface wording.

Choose a starting bitrate for your stream

Set a starting bitrate in OBS based on the resolution, frame rate and codec you plan to use. YouTube’s current encoder recommendation table gives these examples for 1080p at 60 frames per second:

Codec YouTube minimum YouTube recommended
H.264 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
AV1 or H.265 4 Mbps 12 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees or universal requirements. Check YouTube’s full encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions table for your selected profile. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and no interval longer than four seconds.

Allow upload capacity beyond the encoder bitrate: YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom. Its guidance also recommends testing your upload bitrate; actual available upload capacity can vary, so a speed test is a starting point rather than a guarantee of stable streaming. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Set up YouTube and OBS

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go Live. Create or select the stream, then copy its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen, share it, or include it in screenshots. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
  2. Connect OBS to the stream. In OBS, select the YouTube service or enter the stream URL and key in the stream settings. Configure the output resolution, frame rate, codec and starting bitrate for the profile you chose. Set rate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to two seconds, following YouTube’s recommendations.
  3. Enable dynamic bitrate in OBS. Open Settings → Advanced → Network, check Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion (Beta), then choose Apply and OK if those buttons are shown. Menu wording can vary by release; OBS’s current troubleshooting page documents the setting.
  4. Check protocol compatibility. OBS’s interface notes that dynamic bitrate is currently supported only for RTMP. YouTube recommends RTMPS in its encoder workflow. Confirm that your OBS version and service configuration support the protocol combination you intend to use; do not assume the dynamic option applies to every transport.
  5. Test before going live to viewers. Start streaming from OBS and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check picture, movement and audio, then use the control room’s stream-health information while testing. Click Go live only when the preview is ready. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion before an event; see its encoder setup guide and streaming tips.

What dynamic bitrate can—and cannot—do

OBS describes the effect this way: “This will lower the bitrate when your connection cannot keep up, rather than dropping frames.” Lower bitrate means lower image quality. During sudden congestion, OBS’s interface notes that viewer delay can increase, and bitrate may take up to a few minutes to recover. The feature is a fallback for congestion, not a substitute for adequate upload capacity, a reliable connection, or a correctly configured stream.

Troubleshoot common bitrate and connection problems

  • The picture gets softer or blockier while live: Dynamic bitrate may have reduced the outgoing rate to cope with congestion. Check upload capacity and competing network use, and make sure your chosen profile’s bitrate is appropriate. Image quality may remain reduced until conditions improve.
  • Frames still drop: Dynamic bitrate is not a cure for an unstable or insufficient connection. Check your upload capacity against the stream bitrate with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, then test again on the network and with the content you will use live.
  • The checkbox is missing or behaves differently: Confirm you are following the current OBS path, Settings → Advanced → Network. Labels and availability can differ by OBS release; consult the current OBS troubleshooting instructions.
  • The dynamic option does not seem to apply: OBS documents the feature as RTMP-only, while YouTube recommends RTMPS. Check the protocol selected in your OBS service configuration and confirm compatibility rather than assuming the option works over RTMPS.
  • YouTube does not show the expected resolution or frame rate: YouTube’s automatic encoder-setting detection is separate from OBS dynamic bitrate. Verify the output profile in OBS and wait for the Live Control Room preview to reflect the encoder feed.
  • The stream key was exposed: Treat it as a credential. Replace or reset the key in YouTube Studio before streaming again, and update the key in OBS. Do not publish a screenshot or recording that reveals it.
