To add a compatible smart-home device to Apple Home, power it on, connect it to the network, open the Home app on an iPhone, choose Add Accessory, and complete the QR-code or setup-code prompts. Then assign the device to a room and give it a clear name. Whether you also need a home hub depends on the accessory’s protocol and the features you want: Matter accessories require a home hub under Apple’s guidance, while Thread accessories need a Thread-enabled hub for functions such as automations, notifications, and control while away.

Before you start

A few checks prevent most failed pairings. Apple Home does not make every networked device compatible automatically; the exact model must support Apple Home, Matter, or another protocol that Apple Home accepts. Read the accessory’s packaging and documentation rather than relying on the manufacturer’s brand name.

  • Confirm compatibility. Look for Apple Home or Matter support for the exact model and hardware revision.
  • Identify the protocol. Determine whether the device connects directly to Apple Home, uses Matter, or relies on Thread. The protocol affects hub requirements and available features.
  • Prepare the network connection. Connect the accessory to power, switch it on, and complete any network step required by its own instructions.
  • Locate the code before pairing. The setup code may be printed on the accessory, its box, or the documentation. Keep the device nearby while you add it.
  • Decide which features you need. Local control in the home has different requirements from remote control, shared access, notifications, and automations.

Protocol and hub overview

Connection type What to verify Hub implication Typical pairing method
Apple Home or HomeKit-compatible accessory The exact device is listed as compatible with Apple Home A hub is not automatically required for every local-control scenario; check the device and desired features QR code or an eight-digit Apple Home setup code
Matter The accessory’s Matter support and the instructions for its manufacturer app Apple’s guidance says a home hub is required to add Matter accessories QR code, or an 11- or 21-digit Matter code
Thread Whether the accessory uses Thread and which Thread capabilities it needs A Thread-enabled hub is needed for cited features such as automations, notifications, and control while away The code and flow specified by the accessory; Matter-over-Thread devices use Matter pairing details

Do not infer compatibility or hub support from a product category alone. A light, camera, thermostat, or television can have different requirements from another device in the same category.

Add an accessory to Apple Home on iPhone

The Home app’s task is labeled Add Accessory. The first time you use Home, it can guide you through creating a home and defining rooms; an existing home opens directly to its current accessories.

  1. Prepare the accessory. Plug it in or install its batteries, turn it on, and complete the network connection required by its documentation. Leave it close to the iPhone during pairing.
  2. Open Home. Launch the Home app on the iPhone. If prompted to create a home, enter a home name and create the initial rooms. If a home already exists, open that home.
  3. Start the add flow. Choose Add Accessory and follow the onscreen instructions. The app will ask for the accessory’s pairing information when it is ready.
  4. Scan a QR code when offered. Point the iPhone camera at the code on the device, packaging, or paperwork. Keep the entire code in view until Home recognizes it.
  5. Enter a numeric code if scanning is unavailable. A standard Apple Home accessory may use an eight-digit setup code. Matter accessories may use an 11- or 21-digit code. Enter every digit exactly as printed, without adding spaces.
  6. Wait for the pairing result. Keep the accessory powered and nearby while Home adds it. Do not reset or unplug it during this stage.
  7. Choose the room. Select the room where the device is installed. Room assignment determines where it appears in Home and makes room-based control easier.
  8. Name the accessory. Use a short, distinctive name such as “Desk Lamp” or “Living Room TV.” Avoid giving two devices the same name or using names that sound alike.
  9. Finish and test. Return to the Home view and tap the new accessory. Confirm that its primary control responds before moving it to its permanent location.

When a Matter accessory is already paired in another app

A Matter device can be commissioned by another compatible app and then added to Apple Home. In Home, choose More Options, select the accessory, and use the option to generate a pairing code in the accessory’s app. Follow the prompts to share that code with Home.

Apple says paired Matter accessories are synchronized across your Apple devices and stored using iCloud Keychain. If the accessory app does not expose a pairing-code option, consult that app’s instructions instead of repeatedly resetting the device; a reset can remove its existing network and home associations.

Do you need a home hub?

There is no universal “yes” or “no.” The answer depends on the protocol and on whether you want only nearby control or features that require a home hub.

Your goal Hub guidance What to check
Control a compatible accessory while you are at home Some accessories can be controlled locally without a separate hub Read the exact accessory requirements and verify that the local control path works
Add a Matter accessory Apple’s guidance requires a home hub Confirm that the hub and the accessory are supported in your current Apple Home setup
Control accessories while away from home A home hub supports remote control Check whether the accessory also has protocol-specific requirements
Share control with other people A home hub supports shared control Set up the home and invite people through the Home app after pairing
Run automations A home hub is needed for automations For Thread accessories, verify that the hub is Thread-enabled
Use Thread features such as automations, notifications, or control while away A Thread-enabled hub is required for those cited functions Apple identifies HomePod mini and certain Apple TV 4K configurations as Thread-enabled options; verify the exact Apple TV model

A HomePod mini is therefore a conditional choice, not a universal requirement. It can serve as a home hub and a Thread-enabled hub, but buy or configure one only when the accessory and the features you need call for those capabilities. Apple TV 4K capabilities vary by model and connectivity, so check the model-specific documentation.

Organize the home so controls stay understandable

Assign every accessory to a room

Room assignment is more than cosmetic. It lets you find devices by location and makes commands such as controlling everything in a room easier to understand. If you move a device, open its accessory settings and change the room rather than leaving it in its old location.

Use names that work for both people and Siri

Give each accessory one clear name that describes its location or purpose. “Bedroom lamp” is easier to distinguish than “Lamp 2,” especially when several accessories share a category. Avoid unnecessary punctuation, duplicate names, and room words that conflict with the actual room assignment.

Create zones only after rooms are accurate

Rooms can later be grouped into zones, such as an upstairs or downstairs area. Build the room structure first; zones are useful when several rooms should respond to one command or scene.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Control devices after pairing

Open Home and tap an accessory to see controls appropriate to its type. A light may offer on/off and, when supported by that bulb, color controls. A smart television may expose power and input selection. Other categories present different controls, so the accessory’s capabilities determine what appears.

  • Single-device control: tap the accessory tile and use the displayed controls.
  • Grouped control: group compatible accessories when you want several lights or devices to respond together.
  • Room and category views: use the room assignment and category organization to locate devices quickly.
  • Control Center: surface supported Home controls in Control Center for faster access.
  • Siri: use the exact accessory and room names you created. Clear naming reduces ambiguity when you ask Siri to control a device.

Use scenes for repeatable combinations

A scene applies several accessory changes with one action. For example, a “Movie” scene could set supported lights to a chosen state and prepare a television input, while a “Leave” scene could turn off selected devices. The scene’s available actions depend on the accessories included.

  1. Open Home and choose the option to add a scene.
  2. Select a suggested scene or create a custom name.
  3. Add the accessories that should respond.
  4. Set each accessory’s desired state.
  5. Save the scene and test it from the Home app before relying on it as a routine.

Scenes are manual combinations. They do not replace automations, which run in response to an event or condition.

Create automations when a hub is available

Apple describes automations that respond to a time, a location, sensor detection, or an accessory’s action. A home hub is required for automations. Thread accessories add the requirement for a Thread-enabled hub for the relevant automation and notification functions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Home and choose the automation option.
  2. Select the trigger type: time, location, sensor detection, or an accessory action.
  3. Choose the accessory or accessories that should change.
  4. Set the target state, such as switching a light on or turning a device off.
  5. Save the automation and test the trigger under the same conditions it will use in normal operation.

Keep triggers specific. A sensor-based rule should identify the correct sensor, and a time-based rule should use the intended schedule. If an automation does not run, verify the hub and protocol requirements before rebuilding the rule.

Troubleshoot pairing and control problems

Home cannot find the accessory

  • Confirm that the device is powered on and has completed its network setup.
  • Move the iPhone and accessory closer together and retry the add flow.
  • Check the exact model’s Apple Home or Matter compatibility in its documentation.
  • If it was previously paired, use the accessory app’s procedure for generating a new Matter pairing code or follow its documented reset process.

The QR code will not scan

  • Use the numeric code printed with the accessory instead.
  • Enter an eight-digit Apple Home code or the 11- or 21-digit Matter code exactly as shown.
  • Try the code on the accessory itself, then the box or documentation, because some products print different labels in different locations.

The code is rejected

Check that you selected the correct pairing flow and did not confuse an Apple Home code with a Matter code. Re-enter the digits carefully. If the accessory has already been commissioned by another app, generate the pairing code from that app rather than reusing an old code.

Local control works, but remote control or automations do not

This pattern usually indicates a hub or protocol requirement rather than a bad accessory name. Confirm that a home hub is configured for remote access and automations. For a Thread device, verify that the hub is Thread-enabled and that the exact accessory supports the intended function.

The device appears in the wrong room

Open the accessory’s settings, change its room, and save. If several devices have similar names, rename them while you are there so room and Siri commands remain unambiguous.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Siri controls the wrong accessory

Rename duplicates and near-duplicates. Include the room or purpose in the name, and make sure the room assignment matches the physical location. Test one device at a time with a short command before creating scenes that include several similarly named accessories.

Practical setup examples

Adding a compatible light

Power the light, connect it as described by its documentation, and add it through Home. Assign it to the correct room and use a name such as “Kitchen Pendant.” If the bulb supports color, Home will expose color controls; if it does not, those controls will not appear. Add the light to a scene only after direct on/off control works.

Adding a Matter accessory

Identify the Matter code before opening Home. Start Add Accessory, scan the QR code or enter the 11- or 21-digit code, and complete the room and naming steps. Because Apple’s guidance requires a home hub for Matter accessories, resolve the hub requirement before troubleshooting repeated pairing failures.

Adding a Thread accessory

Check that the accessory’s documentation identifies Thread support and states which functions require a Thread-enabled hub. Pair it using the supplied code flow, then test the feature you actually need—such as an automation or control while away—rather than assuming successful local pairing proves every feature is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the setup dependable

  • Keep the original setup code and accessory documentation in a place you can find if the device must be re-added.
  • Use one stable room and naming scheme across the home; changing names later can make Siri commands and scenes harder to remember.
  • When replacing a device, remove or rename the old entry so scenes and automations do not target the wrong accessory.
  • Recheck Apple’s current Home guidance and the accessory maker’s model-specific documentation when you change the iPhone, hub, Apple TV 4K model, or accessory protocol.

What a successful setup looks like

The device is visible in the intended room, its primary control responds from Home, its name is unique, and any requested remote, sharing, scene, or automation feature has been tested under the required hub and protocol conditions. That final test matters: pairing confirms that Home can identify the accessory, while the feature test confirms that your chosen setup supports the way you plan to use it.
