How to Set Up Apple Home and Connect Smart-Home Devices

Apple’s documented smart-home setup uses the Home app, not a consumer “homeOS” installation. Learn how to pair accessories and check Matter and Thread hub requirements.

Apple’s current instructions describe Apple Home, controlled through the Home app—not a consumer operating-system setup called “homeOS.” To connect a device, prepare it, add it in Home on an iPhone or iPad, then check whether its Matter or Thread connection requires a compatible hub.

What you need before adding an accessory

  • An iPhone or iPad with the Home app, which Apple uses to create a home and guide accessory setup. See Apple’s instructions for adding accessories to the Home app.
  • The accessory powered on and connected to its network, if the product requires network setup first. Keep it nearby.
  • The accessory’s setup QR code or printed code. Apple says an Apple Home setup code has eight digits; Matter accessory codes may have 11 or 21 digits.
  • A home hub if you are adding a Matter accessory. If the accessory uses Thread, check the separate Thread hardware requirement below.

How to add a smart-home accessory to Apple Home

  1. Open Home on your iPhone or iPad. If this is your first time using Home, follow its setup assistant to create a home and define rooms. If you already created a home, continue to pairing.
  2. Start pairing. Tap Add Accessory, or tap the Add button and then Add Accessory. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. Scan or enter the setup code. Scan the accessory’s QR code when prompted, or enter the requested printed code. Apple’s setup guide explains the code formats and pairing flow at support.apple.com.
  4. If the Matter accessory is already paired in another app, tap More Options in Home and select the accessory. The other app may provide a pairing code for this process.
  5. Finish the setup. Assign the device to a room and give it a clear name. Apple says you can use the accessory’s name when asking Siri to control it. Home may also suggest automations during setup.

Do you need an Apple home hub?

Yes, if you are adding a Matter accessory to Apple Home: Apple’s guidance says a home hub is required. A HomePod or HomePod mini becomes a hub when you set it up. An Apple TV becomes a hub when you assign it to a room. Apple’s home hub setup instructions give the current steps.

Use a HomePod or HomePod mini

Set up the HomePod or HomePod mini; Apple says it becomes a home hub during setup. HomePod mini is also one of Apple’s named examples of Thread-capable hardware.

Use an Apple TV

On Apple TV, open Settings > AirPlay and Apple Home, choose Room, and assign it to a room. Do not assume every Apple TV model or configuration supports Thread; Apple specifically names Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as a Thread-capable example.

Check Thread separately from Matter

Matter and Thread are different compatibility questions. A Matter accessory needs a home hub for Apple Home pairing. A Thread accessory also needs a Thread-capable hub or a supported third-party border router for this connection path. Apple lists HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K (3rd generation) Wi-Fi + Ethernet as Thread-capable examples in its Thread accessory guidance. Check the accessory’s exact network type and the hub’s model and configuration before buying.

Check the accessory’s exact Apple Home support

Apple’s Matter guidance lists these accessory categories for Home: air conditioners, bridges, lights, locks, plugs, switches, thermostats, blinds and shades, and motion, ambient-light, contact, temperature, and humidity sensors. Category support does not guarantee that every product model exposes every feature in Home. Confirm the exact model’s Apple Home or Matter compatibility and network type in Apple’s Matter accessory guidance and the manufacturer’s specifications.
