Check compatibility before connecting
Samsung’s US T7 support listing specifies Windows 7 or later, Mac OS X 10.10 or later, and Android Lollipop or later. These are model-specific requirements, not a guarantee that every computer, phone, or tablet with those operating systems will work in every configuration. Confirm support for your drive model and host device on Samsung’s T7 support page.

The T7 is preformatted as exFAT, which its manual identifies as supported by Windows, Mac, and Android. Actual access can depend on the host device and operating-system version. If you have files on the drive, do not format it just to troubleshoot: formatting erases data.

Connect the SSD and open its files
- Use a suitable cable and port. Connect the T7 with its supplied or otherwise compatible cable to a USB port on the host. Samsung identifies USB 3.2 Gen 2 as the T7’s optimal interface; older or slower interfaces can limit transfer performance.
- Wait for the host to recognize it. Open File Explorer on Windows, Finder on macOS, or the corresponding file browser on another supported device. Select the external drive to view its contents.
- Copy files normally. Drag files to or from the drive, or use your operating system’s copy and paste commands. Keep the cable connected until transfers finish.
- Eject before unplugging. Use the operating system’s eject action for the external drive, then disconnect the cable. Follow the model’s manual for OS-specific removal steps.
Decide whether to enable password protection
The T7 supports AES 256-bit hardware encryption and optional password protection. If you want the drive protected, use Samsung’s supported software for your model to enable security mode and set a password you can retain securely. Software availability and download details can change, so check Samsung’s current support page rather than relying on an old installer or download instruction.

With security mode on, connect the SSD and unlock it with the password before accessing protected files. If it remains locked, the protected data is unavailable; the computer may show only the small software partition. Keep the password somewhere safe: without it, you may not be able to access the protected data.
Understand what affects transfer speed
Samsung rates the T7 for up to 1,050 MB/s read and 1,000 MB/s write over USB 3.2 Gen 2. These are manufacturer maximums, not guaranteed everyday speeds or independent benchmark results. Samsung’s manual states, “Performance may vary depending on user’s system to which T7 is connected.” The host, cable, port, workload, and UASP support can all affect results; the manual notes that performance may fall short even on a Gen 2 connection without UASP support.

For context when comparing models, Samsung lists up to 2,000 MB/s sequential read/write for the T9, but that maximum requires a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2-capable host and cable with UASP enabled. A faster drive specification only helps if the connected equipment supports the required interface. These figures are manufacturer specifications, not a like-for-like independent test.
Troubleshoot a drive that does not appear or open
- No drive shown: Check the cable and port, try a suitable connection, and confirm the host supports the model. A slower port may affect speed even when it still recognizes the SSD.
- Drive appears, but files do not: If you enabled security mode, unlock it first. Then consider whether the host can read the drive’s exFAT file system.
- Transfers are slower than expected: Check whether the host port and cable support the drive’s interface and whether UASP is supported. Maximum ratings are not promises of real-world performance.
- You are considering reformatting: Stop and back up any accessible files first. Formatting erases data and is not a safe first troubleshooting step.
Find the correct manual and software
Samsung’s T7 support page provides model-specific manuals and software downloads. It is a US business support listing, so regional pages, software, and compatibility details may differ. Verify the exact model and region before following instructions intended for a different drive generation.
