Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe safest way to set up a retro handheld is to identify its exact model, operating system, hardware revision and firmware first, then follow that device or project’s own instructions. A Retroid RP2, a Miyoo running Onion, a Miyoo using MiyooCFW and an ANBERNIC handheld may look similar, but they can require different card formats, folder names, update packages and shutdown procedures.
Before changing anything, complete the first boot, record the software version and make a full backup of the supplied microSD card. Only then should you decide whether to stay with the stock software, install a supported custom firmware, add games and BIOS files, or change frontends.

Start by identifying the handheld
Do not begin with a generic “retro handheld setup” tutorial. Start with the label on the console, the system information screen and the card supplied with it. Write down the exact model, storage size, hardware revision if shown, operating system and firmware version.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Model: Record the complete name, not just the product family. Similar-looking devices can use different images.
- Revision or variant: Note differences such as RAM, internal storage, screen revision or card capacity.
- Operating system: Determine whether the device boots Android, a Linux-based menu, stock firmware or a custom distribution.
- Firmware: Capture the version from Settings, System Information or the device’s About screen before updating.
- Storage arrangement: Check whether games are on a removable card, internal storage or both.
Use the manufacturer’s support page and, if applicable, the custom-firmware project’s supported-device list. An image intended for a similar model is not evidence of compatibility. ANBERNIC’s update listings, for example, separate packages by model and memory or card configuration; that separation is a warning not to guess.

Back up the supplied card before changing it
Make a complete computer copy of the included card before formatting, repartitioning, replacing or “cleaning up” files. Copy hidden files and folders as well as visible game directories, and preserve the original directory structure. Keep the backup in a clearly named folder and do not alter it while experimenting.
This matters especially on the Retroid RP2. Its getting-started documentation says the supplied card contains files required by RetroidOS. Formatting that card first can remove software the system expects. The same guidance says to power the handheld fully off before removing the card.
- Shut the handheld down through its normal menu.
- Remove the card only after the screen is off and the device is no longer writing.
- Insert it into a compatible card reader.
- Copy every file and folder to a computer or another reliable storage location.
- Open the copy and confirm that the expected folders and files are present before proceeding.
A card reader that supports the card’s physical size and interface prevents many transfer errors. If the computer reports a damaged filesystem, stop and make a sector-level or recovery copy rather than repeatedly opening and closing the card.
Complete the first boot before installing anything
Android-based handhelds
On an Android handheld, finish the on-device setup and connect to Wi-Fi before changing launchers or emulators. Check the date, time, language, display and controller settings, then verify that the system can reboot normally. The Retroid RP2 documentation describes Android as its first-boot environment and treats RetroidOS as an optional route. Those menu names and choices are specific to that model and its software generation, not a universal Android handheld procedure.
After the base setup works, decide whether you want the stock launcher, RetroidOS where supported, or another frontend. Delay that choice until the original software has booted successfully; otherwise a launcher problem can be mistaken for a hardware or firmware failure.
Supported Miyoo devices using Onion
Onion’s fresh-install process is for supported Miyoo hardware. It is not a general image for every Miyoo-branded device. Prepare the card according to the project’s current instructions, extract the supplied package folders to the card’s root, insert the card and boot the handheld to begin installation. Once the installation screen appears, use Package Manager to select the systems and applications you actually need.

Choose stock software or custom firmware deliberately
Custom firmware is optional. It may offer a different interface, additional applications or a more convenient game-management workflow, but it also introduces compatibility and recovery risks. Keep the original card backup even after a successful installation.
| Decision factor | Stock firmware or launcher | Supported custom firmware |
|---|---|---|
| Compatibility | Matches the software shipped for the exact device. | Depends on the project’s supported-model list and image. |
| Setup effort | Usually limited to first boot, storage and emulator settings. | Requires card preparation, package installation and a recovery plan. |
| Game and save access | Uses the folders and import tools expected by the manufacturer. | May use different folder names, cores or save locations. |
| Storage requirements | Follow the stock documentation; formats can vary by model. | Follow the project’s specified filesystem and card layout. |
| Recovery | Restore the backed-up supplied card or official image. | Restore the original backup and reflash only with the matching image. |
Compare the routes using the exact model, access to your existing games and saves, emulator compatibility, setup complexity, storage requirements and available recovery instructions. The available documentation demonstrates meaningful variation but does not establish one universal winner.
Prepare a replacement or expansion card
Never assume every retro handheld uses the same filesystem. Onion’s documented fresh-install flow specifies FAT32. The Retroid RP2 guide describes an exFAT replacement card for its RetroidOS setup and expects files from the original card to be copied into the required structure. These are different examples, not steps to combine.
- Read the instructions for the exact device and firmware version.
- Confirm the supported card capacity and filesystem.
- Back up the original card before formatting it.
- Format the replacement card using the documented method.
- Copy only the files and folders required by that firmware, preserving their names and nesting.
- Safely eject the card from the computer.
- Power the handheld completely off before inserting it.
If the device uses more than one partition, follow its partitioning instructions exactly. Do not resize, rename or merge partitions because a layout that works on one model can make another device unbootable.

Onion’s folder workflow
Onion uses system-specific subfolders inside Roms. Put each game in the folder matching its system, using the project’s naming and extension guidance. Place BIOS files in the BIOS folder only when the selected emulator requires them. A BIOS is not automatically needed for every system or every emulator core.
Check the documentation for the specific emulator or core to learn the exact filename and revision it expects. A correctly placed but incorrectly named BIOS may be ignored, while an unnecessary BIOS can create confusion when troubleshooting. After copying games, boot the device and use Onion’s documented refresh or reindex action so the frontend rebuilds its library.
RetroidOS on the RP2
The Retroid RP2 guide uses a different import process. Copy supported files to /games/download/, open External games management and assign an emulator to each imported title. The guide notes limitations for compressed and multi-file games, so do not assume every archive or disc-based format will import correctly. If a title does not appear, verify its format and file structure before changing unrelated settings.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Configure emulators, controls and saves
Start with one game for which you have the right to play. Confirm that the frontend displays it, that the intended emulator opens and that every important control responds: directional input, face buttons, shoulder buttons, start, select, menu and any analogue controls.
- Launch the title from the frontend rather than opening the emulator directly.
- Check orientation, aspect ratio, scaling and audio before changing performance options.
- Open the emulator’s own control-mapping screen and verify each button.
- Save the configuration through that emulator’s documented method.
- Create a test save, exit normally and relaunch to confirm that saves persist.
The RP2 documentation says its controls are already configured in RetroidOS and its Android emulators. Treat that as an observation about the RP2 setup, not a promise that another handheld will use the same mappings. If a frontend and emulator both have control settings, determine which layer takes priority before remapping every button.

ANBERNIC’s system-update listings include a specific warning for some 16 GB packages: installing those operating-system packages can prevent SD expansion or ROM installation on the card after installation. Read such caveats before choosing an image; a newer version is not automatically the right version for your storage plan.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Confirm the exact model and variant printed on the device or shown in system information.
- Read the complete release and flashing instructions.
- Back up the working card and any save data.
- Use the specified card capacity, filesystem and folder layout.
- Keep the handheld powered and do not interrupt the flash.
- Let the first boot finish, then verify controls, storage and a test game.
If an update fails, stop trying random images. Restore the backed-up card or use the manufacturer’s model-specific recovery procedure. The ANBERNIC support portal provides separate troubleshooting and flashing resources by model.
Shut down without corrupting the card
Use the operating system’s shutdown command instead of pulling the card or holding the power button while files are being written. The exact timing differs by firmware.
Miyoo Custom Firmware documentation says version 2.0.0 writes data every five seconds and recommends waiting at least five seconds after saving or performing a proper shutdown. Its guidance includes a menu-based shutdown path. That timing and menu belong to MiyooCFW; apply your own device’s documented procedure to other handhelds.
The MiyooCFW documentation also recommends not using the card included with the console or unbranded cards because they can be corrupted easily due to poor quality. This is the project’s recommendation, not a measured failure-rate claim for every bundled card. Regardless of firmware, use a reputable, compatible card and retain a backup.
Troubleshoot the common setup failures
The handheld will not boot after a card change
- Power it off completely and reseat the card.
- Confirm that the card uses the required filesystem and partition layout.
- Check that boot files and hidden folders were copied to the card root.
- Restore the original backup to determine whether the issue is the card setup or the device.
- Do not flash a package for a similar-looking model.
Games do not appear
- Verify that files are in the correct system folder, such as the matching subfolder under
Romsfor Onion. - Run the frontend’s refresh or reindex action.
- Check the supported extension and whether the file is still inside an unsupported archive.
- For RetroidOS, confirm that the file was copied to
/games/download/and assigned through External games management.
A game launches but reports a missing BIOS
- Confirm that the emulator actually requires a BIOS.
- Read that emulator or core’s documentation for the exact filename and revision.
- Place the file in the required BIOS location, such as Onion’s
BIOSfolder when applicable. - Restart or refresh the frontend after copying it.
Controls are wrong or inconsistent
- Test the physical buttons in the system menu to separate hardware from emulator mapping.
- Check whether the frontend or emulator is overriding the other.
- Map one emulator first, save its profile and test a second title before changing global settings.
- Restore the emulator’s default mapping if a partial remap made input worse.
Saves disappear
- Exit through the emulator and operating-system menus so pending writes finish.
- Check whether the game was launched by a different emulator core with a different save directory.
- Do not remove the card immediately after saving; follow the firmware’s documented wait or shutdown procedure.
- Restore a known-good backup before experimenting with file moves.
A practical first-day checklist
- Record model, revision, operating system and firmware version.
- Boot the device once without modifying the card.
- Connect to Wi-Fi if the operating system requires it for setup.
- Back up every file on the supplied card.
- Read the exact stock or custom-firmware instructions for the model.
- Choose the documented filesystem and card capacity.
- Install custom firmware only from a supported-device package.
- Copy legally obtained games into the required folders.
- Add BIOS files only when the selected emulator requires them.
- Refresh the library and test one title.
- Verify controls and a test save.
- Shut down through the proper menu before removing storage.
When to stop changing things
A setup is complete when the handheld boots reliably, the intended frontend finds your legally obtained library, the correct emulator launches, controls respond, saves persist and the card can be removed safely after shutdown. More firmware changes, launcher swaps and performance tweaks are optional. Keep the original backup so you can return to that known-good state instead of treating every problem as a reason to reflash.
