To set up a standard Xfinity WiFi box, connect the gateway to an active coax outlet and power, then activate it in the Xfinity app. The app checks the connection and guides you through naming and securing your WiFi network. Apartment and fiber setups can use different equipment or instructions, so check those exceptions before connecting anything.
What you need before setup
For a typical Internet or Voice self-install kit, gather the gateway, included coax cable and power cord, a phone, tablet or computer, and your Xfinity ID and password. Xfinity says the kit normally includes those cables and that no tools are needed. The coax cable may not be included for fiber-to-the-unit installations. Have the account holder or a user with Primary or Manager permissions perform activation in the Xfinity app. The app’s screens and the gateway’s light pattern can vary by equipment, so follow the prompts for your specific setup.
Connect and activate a standard gateway

Choose a suitable outlet and location
Use an active coax outlet; one that previously provided service is a likely candidate. Keep the gateway in an open location rather than a cramped space, and place it at least a few feet above the floor.

Connect the cables
Attach the coax cable between the wall outlet and the gateway, tightening the connectors by hand. Connect the gateway’s power cord and plug it in. Wait for the lights to indicate readiness, using the packaging or app instructions for your model rather than relying on a universal light pattern.

Start activation in the Xfinity app
Open the Xfinity app, sign in, and follow the gateway activation prompts. If you are replacing a gateway and the setup prompt does not appear, Xfinity’s instructions give this route: Account > Set up equipment or devices > Xfinity Gateway or Modem. The app checks the connection; if it reports that the outlet is inactive, try another outlet and repeat the check. Follow Xfinity’s app activation instructions.

Set your WiFi name and password
Choose a network name and password in the app. If you reuse the name and password from your previous WiFi network, devices may recognize the network and reconnect. If you choose new credentials, reconnect each device using the updated details.

Allow time for the activation process
Xfinity gives different estimates on its setup pages: its new-customer instructions say activation may take a few minutes, while its app activation article estimates about 20 minutes. Allow time for the app’s full process rather than treating either figure as a guarantee.

If your home uses a different setup
WiFi Ready Apartment
In some WiFi Ready Apartments, the gateway is already installed in a media panel and connected to a cable outlet. You may be able to activate through the app without a separate self-install kit or technician visit. Follow the instructions for your property and the equipment already there. Fiber or property-installed equipment
Fiber-only properties may require a pre-installed fiber gateway. Some fiber-delivered apartment setups instead require you to connect your own Ethernet router, and Xfinity says the app cannot be used for activation in those cases. These are not interchangeable with the standard coax-gateway steps; use the directions supplied for your specific property and equipment. Troubleshoot a gateway that will not activate
- Check both cable connections. Make sure the coax connectors are secure at the wall and gateway, and confirm the power cord is connected.
- Try another coax outlet. If the app says the connection is not active, move the gateway to another outlet and run the app’s connection check again.
- Restart the gateway. Unplug it for 30 seconds, reconnect power, wait for it to become ready, and retry activation in the app.
- Use the equipment-specific instructions. If the lights or app prompts do not match the standard flow, check the packaging and the instructions for your gateway or apartment setup.
A coax cable is normally included in a standard kit, so buying one is only relevant if yours is missing or cannot reach an active outlet. Xfinity says no tools are required.

An extender is separate from basic gateway setup and should be activated only after the gateway is working. If you have a coverage gap, Xfinity advises placing an extender in a room about halfway between the gateway and the area with weak coverage; the app guides its activation.
