How to Set Up an Ultrawide Monitor for Split-Screen Multitasking

Use Windows Snap or macOS tiling to arrange apps from one computer. Use monitor PBP only for separate video sources, and verify support for your exact model.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To split an ultrawide monitor between apps on one computer, use your operating system’s window-tiling controls; you usually do not need a monitor setting or a special cable. Use the monitor’s Picture-by-Picture (PBP) mode only when you want to show separate devices or video inputs at the same time. The right setup depends on whether you are arranging windows from one computer or combining independent sources.

That distinction is the key to choosing the right steps: window tiling rearranges apps that are already running on one computer, while PBP combines signals from separate inputs. Start with the first approach if you want a browser beside a document or chat window. Check for PBP only if, for example, you want two computers visible on the same display.

Choose the right kind of split screen

“Split screen” can mean two different things on an ultrawide display. Deciding which one you need determines where to set it up.

Arrange a browser, document, chat app, or other windows from one computer Windows Snap or macOS window tiling Positions the computer’s application windows on the display. The available layouts depend on the operating system and version.
Show two computers or other video sources at once Monitor PBP, if supported Displays separate input sources side by side. The monitor model, available ports, and signal can constrain the setup.
Create a custom arrangement of several windows in Windows Microsoft PowerToys FancyZones Lets you define and use custom window zones. It is optional software, not a monitor feature.

If all the apps are open on one computer, start with its window controls. PBP is not needed to put those apps side by side.

A quick way to choose is to ask where each thing you want to see is coming from. If they are apps on the same computer, use its built-in window controls. If they are independent devices connected to different monitor inputs, look up PBP in the monitor manual. A screen that supports PBP may be able to show two sources, but PBP does not create more apps or windows on the computer.

There is also no one layout that is guaranteed to suit every ultrawide, app, or operating-system version. Use the layouts and prompts actually shown on your computer, and treat monitor-specific input instructions as model-specific.

Arrange windows in Windows

Turn on Snap windows

  1. Open Settings > System > Multitasking.
  2. Turn on Snap windows. If it is already enabled, leave it on and move to arranging your windows.
  3. Use the controls available in your version of Windows. The exact layout choices and on-screen behavior can differ between Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Snap is the starting point for arranging several apps from one Windows computer; it does not depend on the monitor having PBP. Once enabled, position the app windows using the available layout menu, mouse placement, or keyboard shortcut. If the instructions you are following do not match the controls on your screen, rely on the controls in your installed Windows version rather than looking for a layout that may not be offered there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a layout in Windows 11

  1. Open the first app you want to position.
  2. Hover over the window’s Maximize button to display the available Snap layouts, or press Windows key + Z.
  3. Select a region in the layout. Windows places the app in that region.
  4. If Windows presents Snap Assist with other open windows, select one to fill another region. Otherwise, snap the next window using the layout menu or a positioning method below.

Do not assume every app or Windows version offers identical layouts. Use the choices actually shown on your computer.

Think of the layout picker as a set of available placements, not as a promise that every ultrawide will show the same arrangement. After assigning the first window, follow Snap Assist if it offers other open windows for the remaining area. If it does not, position another app yourself with the same layout menu or with mouse or keyboard placement. You can repeat that process for additional open windows where the selected layout permits.

Snap by dragging or using the keyboard

  • Mouse: Drag a window to a screen edge and release when the placement cue appears. Follow the on-screen cue; the available result depends on the controls in your Windows version.
  • Keyboard: Select a window and use Windows key + an arrow key to move it toward a side or edge. If the result is not the region you want, use another arrow key or choose a visible Snap layout.

After placing the first window, use Snap Assist or position another open window to occupy the remaining space. Repeat the process to arrange additional windows wherever the available layout permits.

These methods are alternatives for placing windows, not separate monitor modes. Try the layout picker if you want to see the choices at once, edge dragging if you prefer to place a window with the mouse, or the Windows-key-plus-arrow method if you prefer the keyboard. The visible placement cue and offered layouts help confirm where the window will land. If the result is not what you intended, choose another visible layout or reposition the window rather than changing the monitor’s input settings.

Build custom zones with FancyZones

For a layout that does not match the built-in Snap choices, Microsoft PowerToys FancyZones provides an optional Windows window manager. Its layout editor lets you create or edit zones, and you can assign a hotkey to a custom layout.

  1. Install and open Microsoft PowerToys.
  2. Open the FancyZones settings and launch its layout editor.
  3. Select or create a layout that suits the way you want to divide the display, then save it.
  4. In FancyZones settings, assign a hotkey if you want to activate that layout with a keyboard shortcut.
  5. Use the configured layout to place your windows into its zones.

FancyZones adds a software-based layout option; it does not change the monitor’s inputs or turn on PBP.

Use it when you want to define zones that differ from the built-in Snap choices or repeat a custom arrangement. It is optional: if the native layout choices meet your needs, there is no need to install an extra utility. FancyZones also does not make a monitor compatible with PBP; it manages application windows on the Windows computer.

Arrange windows on a Mac

Apple documents two relevant approaches: put two apps into Split View using a window’s green button, or choose from the window-tiling arrangements shown by macOS. The menu options you see are the reliable guide to what your current setup offers; do not count on a particular number of zones or a universal ultrawide preset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For two apps, Split View is the direct option: choose it from the green button’s visible controls, then select the second window when macOS asks. If you want a different arrangement, inspect the window-tiling options available from the green button and follow the prompts. Which choices appear can vary, so use your Mac’s menu rather than assuming that a particular layout is available.

Use Split View for two apps

  1. Open the two apps you want to use.
  2. In the first app’s window, move the pointer over the green window button.
  3. Choose the visible option to put that window into Split View.
  4. When macOS prompts you to choose another window, select the second app.

Use the window controls to leave Split View or change the arrangement when you are finished.

Choose a window-tiling arrangement

  1. Open the app windows you want to arrange.
  2. Move the pointer over a window’s green button to view the available window-tiling choices.
  3. Select an arrangement, then follow the prompts to place the other windows.

Choose from the options displayed on your Mac rather than assuming that every version of macOS exposes the same choices.

  • WQHD Resolution: At 5 million pixels, Wide Quad HD Resolution (3440 x 1440) display resolution provides you with the next level of refined, and detailed picture over the current 1080P standard.

As on Windows, this is window arrangement on one computer, not the monitor’s separate-input feature. If your goal is to see two computer sources at once, check whether the monitor supports PBP instead of looking for a Mac window-tiling setting to combine the signals.

Use PBP for separate computers or inputs

Picture-by-Picture shows separate video sources in different portions of one monitor. For example, one side can show a computer connected to one input and the other side a second device connected to another input. Samsung’s support guidance describes this use of PBP, and its CJ791 product page provides one example of a 34-inch, 21:9 ultrawide that supports it. That example is not evidence that every ultrawide monitor has PBP.

Before changing settings, confirm the exact monitor model and check its manual. PBP availability, the ports that can be used together, and the setup sequence vary by model. A monitor’s on-screen menu may use different labels or put the controls in a different place.

Checking the manual before connecting devices can save troubleshooting time: support for one input does not establish that every pair of inputs can be used simultaneously. Look for the monitor’s PBP instructions, the supported port combinations, and the input resolutions or signals permitted in that mode. The exact setup is a monitor capability, not a universal ultrawide feature.

Set up PBP carefully

  1. Find the monitor’s exact model name or number, then open the manual for that model.
  2. Check whether the manual lists PBP support and identify the input ports that can be used simultaneously.
  3. Connect each computer or device to a supported input. Use the manual’s supported input and resolution information for each source.
  4. Open the monitor’s on-screen display menu and select PBP. Follow the model-specific instructions to assign an input to each side.
  5. Check that both sources appear. If a side is blank or the picture is unsuitable, compare the connected port and signal with the monitor’s documented PBP requirements before changing more settings.

Samsung’s manual for the specified C34G5*T* model family warns that an unsuitable PBP input signal may result in a blank screen. Treat that as guidance for the models covered by that manual, not a universal rule for all monitors. Check the manual for your own model before diagnosing a signal problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that a blank half means the monitor is defective or that a particular cable or dock will solve the issue. First compare the selected source, connected port, and input signal with the requirements in the manual for your model. The available guidance does not establish one universal cable, dock, port pairing, or resolution for all PBP monitors, so avoid applying another model’s settings to yours.

Troubleshoot a layout that does not work

First identify which kind of split you are trying to create. If you are arranging apps on one computer, troubleshoot that computer’s window controls. If you are displaying independent sources, troubleshoot the monitor’s PBP support, input assignment, and documented signal requirements. Keeping those two paths separate prevents a common dead end: searching the monitor’s on-screen menu for a way to tile apps that the computer itself should arrange.

Windows does not show the layout you expected

  • Check Settings > System > Multitasking and confirm Snap windows is enabled.
  • In Windows 11, try hovering over the window’s Maximize button or pressing Windows key + Z to see the layouts available on that system.
  • If you are using Windows 10, follow the controls visible in that version rather than expecting the Windows 11 layout menu.
  • For a custom arrangement, use FancyZones and check that the desired layout is selected or assigned to its hotkey.

If one method does not produce the placement you expect, try another documented Snap method: choose an available layout, drag the window until a placement cue appears, or use the Windows key with an arrow key. Then place the remaining windows through Snap Assist or another visible placement. Layout choices and behavior can differ by Windows version, so avoid treating an absent option as a broken monitor.

A Mac does not offer the arrangement you want

  • Hover over the green button and inspect the window-tiling choices macOS actually displays.
  • For two apps, use the Split View option and select the second window when prompted.
  • If the available arrangement is not suitable, use a different visible option rather than assuming a particular ultrawide-specific preset exists.

The green-button menu is the practical check: use the available Split View or window-tiling choice and follow its prompts. If you expect more zones than the menu offers, the available information does not support assuming macOS provides a universal ultrawide layout.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A PBP side is blank or looks wrong

  • Verify that the monitor supports PBP; the feature is model-dependent.
  • Check the manual’s list of input combinations that can be used at the same time.
  • Confirm that each source is connected to the intended port and selected for the correct side in the monitor’s on-screen menu.
  • Check the source signal and resolution against the monitor’s documented PBP support.
  • If the manual identifies a signal restriction or warning, apply it only to the monitor models covered by that manual.

Use the steps in order: verify the feature, verify the simultaneous port pairing, verify the input assigned to each side, and verify the signal against the manual. Samsung’s C34G5*T* manual warning about an unsuitable PBP signal is useful only for the model family it covers; other monitors may have different rules. Check the exact manual rather than assuming that a symptom or fix transfers across models.

Do you need new hardware?

For window tiling from one computer, first try the operating system’s built-in controls. A suitable ultrawide does not need PBP for ordinary app multitasking. If you want two independent sources, you do need a monitor that supports PBP and a port combination that its manual allows. A cable or dock is relevant only if the particular computer and monitor connection requires one; there is no universal cable or dock specification for this setup.

When considering a monitor specifically for separate inputs, verify PBP support in the manual for the exact model and confirm the simultaneous input ports and signal requirements. A product description may establish support for one model, but it cannot establish support for an entire monitor category.

For a Windows custom layout, FancyZones is an optional software choice rather than a hardware purchase. For ordinary app tiling, start with Snap or macOS window tiling before shopping for a monitor, dock, or cable. If you are buying for PBP, treat “ultrawide monitor with PBP” as a more specific search than “ultrawide monitor,” but verify the exact model and port combination before relying on a listing. No single accessory specification applies to every setup.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I split an ultrawide monitor?

For apps running on one computer, use Windows Snap or macOS Split View and window tiling. Use monitor PBP only if you want to display separate device inputs and your exact monitor model supports it.

How do I arrange windows side by side in Windows?

Turn on Snap windows under Settings > System > Multitasking. In Windows 11, hover over a window’s Maximize button or press Windows key + Z to choose a visible layout. You can also drag a window toward a screen edge or use Windows key with an arrow key.

Do I need PBP to use two apps on one ultrawide?

No. PBP is for separate video sources. To place two or more apps from one computer side by side, use the computer’s window-management controls.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does every ultrawide monitor support Picture-by-Picture?

No. PBP support and simultaneous input combinations depend on the exact monitor model. Check its manual for supported ports, signals, and setup steps.

Can I show two computers on one ultrawide at the same time?

You can if the monitor supports PBP and its manual allows the two connected inputs to be used simultaneously. Connect the sources to supported ports and assign each input to a side in the monitor’s on-screen menu.

What should I check if one side of PBP is blank?

Check that the monitor supports PBP, that the two ports can be used together, and that each input is assigned correctly. Then compare the source signal and resolution with the manual for your exact monitor.

Do I need to buy a special cable or dock to split an ultrawide?

Not for ordinary window tiling; try the operating system’s built-in controls first. A cable or dock may be relevant for a particular computer-to-monitor connection, but there is no universal cable or dock specification for PBP.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I create custom window zones in Windows?

Microsoft PowerToys FancyZones lets you create or edit layouts in its layout editor and assign a hotkey to a custom layout. It is optional software for arranging windows, not a monitor feature.

The Bottom Line

To arrange apps from one computer, start with Windows Snap or macOS window tiling; add FancyZones on Windows only if you want custom zones. To show separate devices at once, use PBP only if your exact monitor supports it, and follow its manual for port combinations and signal requirements. You do not need to buy a PBP monitor just to put apps side by side.
