How to Set Up an NDI Output in OBS Studio

Use DistroAV, formerly OBS-NDI, to send OBS Studio’s program view over NDI. Check version requirements, install the plugin, and troubleshoot output discovery.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To send OBS Studio’s live program view over NDI, install the third-party DistroAV plugin (formerly OBS-NDI), meet its current OBS and NDI requirements, then enable its NDI output using the labels in your installed version. NDI does not provide an official OBS plugin. DistroAV’s current listing requires OBS Studio 31.1.1 or newer; its 6.2.0 release notes specify NDI SDK 6.3.0 or newer. NDI’s OBS documentation describes the runtime requirement as NDI Runtime 6.3 or newer.

Choose the right NDI function in OBS

DistroAV adds audio/video input and output over IP using NDI. Its three features move media in different directions, so choose by what you need to send or receive:

Feature Direction and scope Use it when
NDI Output Sends OBS’s main program view out over NDI. You want another NDI-capable application or device to receive the finished OBS program.
NDI Source Brings an external NDI feed into OBS. You want OBS to use video arriving from another NDI source.
NDI Filter Sends its parent OBS source or scene over NDI. You need to send a particular source or scene, rather than the main program view. The plugin listing says audio works only with video capture sources, media sources, and VLC sources.

For an outgoing program feed, use NDI Output—not NDI Source.

Check compatibility before installing

  • OBS and platform: DistroAV’s listing for version 6.2.0, last updated April 21, 2026, supports 64-bit Windows, macOS, and Linux and lists OBS Studio 31.1.1 as its minimum. Check the DistroAV listing for current requirements.
  • NDI requirement: DistroAV 6.2.0 release notes specify NDI SDK 6.3.0 or newer; NDI’s OBS page describes NDI Runtime 6.3 or newer. Follow the current installation notes for the release you choose, since requirements can change between versions. DistroAV release notes
  • Architecture and OBS version: OBS cautions that plugins can be limited by operating system or architecture, or may not yet support the OBS version installed on your computer. See OBS’s plugin guide.

Install DistroAV and enable the output

  1. Confirm your OBS version and system architecture. Check that your setup meets the current DistroAV requirements before downloading. If you use a portable or custom OBS installation, make sure the installer targets the correct plugin location; OBS’s plugin guide notes that custom data/plugins directories may require a changed install target.
  2. Remove an old OBS-NDI plugin, if present. NDI’s documentation directs users to remove the old plugin before installing DistroAV to avoid conflicts. DistroAV’s 6.0.0 update says the project was renamed and that OBS-NDI must be uninstalled when moving to DistroAV 6.x; that update says settings transfer automatically. Follow the instructions for your installed versions in NDI’s OBS documentation and the DistroAV release notes.
  3. Install DistroAV and satisfy its NDI dependency. Use the current operating-system instructions from the project. The 6.2.0 notes describe a one-click installer for missing requirements on Windows and macOS. Earlier 6.1.1 notes document Winget on Windows, Homebrew on macOS, and Flathub on Linux; these are version-specific routes, not guaranteed instructions for every later release.
  4. Restart OBS and locate the output control. After installation, look for DistroAV’s NDI output controls and enable NDI Output for the main program view. Exact dialog names and menu paths are not established across operating systems and plugin versions, so use the labels and version-matched instructions that appear in your current installation instead of relying on an older guide’s menu sequence.
  5. Set up the receiver. On the other device or in the receiving application, discover or select the NDI output on your network. NDI carries audio and video over IP; the reviewed setup information does not make a new cable or specific network hardware a requirement. A wired Ethernet connection is an optional network choice, not a DistroAV prerequisite.

Troubleshoot a missing output or receiver

NDI controls do not appear in OBS

  • Check that DistroAV installed and loaded, rather than only adding an NDI Source.
  • Compare the installed OBS and NDI versions with the requirements for your DistroAV release. Requirements have changed: the 6.1.1 notes listed OBS 31+ and NDI 6+, while 6.2.0 notes specify OBS 31.1.1 and SDK 6.3.0.
  • Verify operating system and architecture support, and check that a portable or custom OBS installation is using the plugin directory targeted by the installer.
  • If an older OBS-NDI plugin remains installed, remove it before installing DistroAV 6.x.

The receiver cannot discover the feed

  • Confirm NDI Output is enabled and that the receiving application or device is configured to discover or receive an NDI source on the network.
  • Check network and firewall permissions on the sending and receiving systems. DistroAV 6.1.1 release notes mention added Windows firewall rules; installing the plugin alone does not guarantee discovery.
  • Use the troubleshooting instructions for your specific DistroAV version rather than assuming the same discovery controls apply to every release.

The plugin reports a missing requirement

DistroAV 6.2.0 notes describe an installer for missing requirements on Windows and macOS and improved management of those requirements. Install or update the dependency specified by the current plugin installer or release notes, then restart OBS and check again.
