To use a server, a client must resolve its distribution details, configure a local command or remote endpoint, start the process or connect, and complete MCP initialization and capability negotiation. Only after that protocol exchange is it ready for MCP operations.
What does an MCP directory entry actually mean?
The official MCP Registry announcement describes the Registry as an open catalog and API for discovering publicly available MCP servers. Maintainers publish and maintain self-reported information. A listing can help a client or person find distribution and connection details; it does not establish that the server is installed, trusted, available, or running.

The entry is metadata for downstream tools to interpret. The Registry’s server.json format can describe identity, packages and versions, package registries and identifiers, runtime hints, launch arguments, environment variables, OCI images, transports, and remote endpoints. The selected client and its supported installation paths determine what happens next.

There is no universal install command. First determine whether the server is distributed as a local package or executable, an OCI image, or a remote service. The format’s examples include an npm package, a PyPI package launched with uvx, a Rust binary installed with Cargo and invoked from PATH, and a container image with mount arguments. These are examples of distribution routes, not a promise that every MCP client supports each one.

- Read the distribution metadata. Check the package identifier and version, runtime hint, launch arguments, required environment values, and transport in the server’s
server.jsonentry. For remote servers, identify the endpoint and transport instead of looking for a local package command. - Confirm the client supports that route. Clients can differ in which package managers, runtimes, transports, and configuration formats they support. Follow the instructions for the client you intend to use rather than treating the directory record as a one-click installer.
- Provide the required local prerequisites. A local package route may depend on the matching runtime, package manager, executable being on PATH, permissions, environment variables, or a working directory. A remote route instead depends on a reachable endpoint and any required authorization.
For example, the Registry format includes a Node package example identifying @modelcontextprotocol/server-filesystem, a Python example using a PyPI package with uvx, and a Rust example that installs with Cargo before running a binary from PATH. Treat each example as a shape of metadata, not as a command that applies to every client or server.
How do I connect an MCP server to my client?
Connection configuration depends on whether the client will launch a local process over stdio or connect to a remote HTTP endpoint. The MCP Inspector documentation provides concrete examples for that tool, including a local npx command and a Streamable HTTP URL. Its fields and defaults are Inspector-specific; other clients may use different configuration files and setup flows.
| Setup detail | Local package / stdio | Remote endpoint / HTTP |
|---|---|---|
| What the client configures | Executable command, arguments, working directory, and optional environment values | Server URL and potentially headers or authorization |
| What becomes active | A child process on the client’s host | A connection to a server hosted elsewhere |
| Distribution details | Package manager or runtime identifier, or an OCI image, as described in metadata | A remote endpoint and transport, as described in metadata |
| What must succeed for MCP use | The process starts and MCP initialization succeeds | The endpoint connects and MCP initialization succeeds |
| Key operational dependency | Compatible runtime and package, permissions, and correct environment | Endpoint availability and any required authentication; the cited sources do not establish a service-level guarantee |
In Inspector’s documented local configuration, the command and arguments describe how to launch the server, while environment values can provide settings the process needs. For a remote setup, the URL identifies where the client connects and headers may carry required credentials. Do not copy a configuration example from one client into another without checking that client’s documented format.

What happens between setup and a ready server?
Starting a local process or opening a remote connection does not, by itself, mean MCP operations can begin. The MCP lifecycle specification (2025-11-25) defines initialization as the step that negotiates a protocol version and capabilities.

- The client sends an
initializerequest. - The server responds with the negotiated protocol version, its server information, and its capabilities.
- After successful initialization, the client sends
notifications/initialized. - Client and server proceed with operations supported by the negotiated version and capabilities.
This exchange is the documented boundary between “the process launched or connection opened” and “ready for MCP operations.” A client and server must use the negotiated protocol version and should not assume capabilities that were not negotiated.

A directory record describes discovery and distribution; it does not verify a particular client’s runtime, configuration, network route, credentials, or protocol readiness. Trace the failure in order, from the route the client tries to use to initialization.

- Client does not recognize the package route: Check whether the client supports the listed package manager, runtime, or OCI distribution. A package identifier in metadata is not proof that the client can install or launch it.
- Local process fails to launch: Confirm the command and arguments, runtime availability, executable path, working directory, permissions, and required environment values. These are part of the local configuration, not properties guaranteed by the directory listing.
- Remote connection fails: Check that the configured URL is correct and reachable from the client, and that any required headers or authorization are present. The cited documentation does not establish uptime or a service-level guarantee for a particular endpoint.
- Process or connection starts but MCP is not ready: Check whether the client receives a successful
initializeresponse with a negotiated protocol version and capabilities, and then sendsnotifications/initialized. A successful spawn alone is not the readiness test. - Some operations are unavailable: Verify that the operation is supported by the server’s negotiated capabilities and the protocol version agreed during initialization.
The Registry API documentation covers list, search, version, and status operations, along with validation and publishing authentication. These are registry-facing operations; a registry status or listing should not be confused with a live check that a server can launch or accept MCP requests through a specific client.

How do I know an MCP server is running?
Separate three states: a server is listed in a directory; a local process has started or a remote endpoint has accepted a connection; and MCP initialization has completed. The first is discovery, the second is transport-level activity, and the third is the protocol boundary that establishes readiness for MCP operations. Look for the client’s successful initialization result and negotiated capabilities rather than relying on the directory entry or a process-start message alone.
How should an MCP client stop a local server?
For stdio, the lifecycle specification describes shutdown through the underlying transport. The client should close the child process’s input stream, wait for it to exit, and, if it does not exit within a reasonable time, escalate with SIGTERM or SIGKILL. This process-management guidance applies to the local stdio path; a remote connection has no local child process for the client to terminate.
