To set up an iPhone Air, choose how to move your data, connect to Wi-Fi, sign in to your Apple Account, configure device security and recovery, and activate cellular service with the method your carrier supports. If you’re transferring an eSIM or using two phone lines, check the carrier and regional requirements before relying on a particular setup option.
Before you start: prepare your old device and choose a transfer method
Decide how you want to bring your apps and data to the iPhone Air. The right choice depends on whether your old device is available, whether you have a recent backup, and whether you want to use the new phone while content downloads.

Quick Start and direct transfer
For Quick Start, connect the old device to Wi-Fi, turn on Bluetooth, unlock it, and place it near the iPhone Air. Follow the on-screen prompts. Keep both devices close together and connected to power until migration finishes. Apple notes that Quick Start occupies both devices for several minutes, so choose a time when you can leave them unused. See Apple’s Quick Start instructions.

With a direct device transfer, wait for the transfer to complete before using the new iPhone. The time required varies with the amount of data and network conditions; Apple does not give a fixed duration in its guidance.

Restore or download from a backup
Restoring from an iCloud backup or a computer backup is another option. With iCloud, apps and data can continue downloading in the background, so you may be able to use the iPhone Air sooner. Apple also lists wired transfer as an option. For the available methods and steps, see Apple’s guide to transferring data to a new iPhone or iPad.
Use a recent backup if you are not transferring directly from an old device. If you want to start using the iPhone Air while content downloads, iCloud is the better fit; if you choose direct transfer, plan to wait until it finishes.
Connect to Wi-Fi and sign in to your Apple Account
During setup, choose a Wi-Fi network and sign in with the Apple Account you use for Apple services. If you don’t want to sign in at that point, follow the setup prompts and complete the account step later. To check the account currently signed in, open Settings and tap your name at the top.

Apple’s essential iPhone setup guidance also covers Face ID or Touch ID, Find My iPhone, and iCloud features. Review which iCloud services you want enabled so the information you care about is synchronized or protected.
Set up device security and recovery
Configure Face ID or Touch ID
Follow the setup prompt to configure the biometric authentication option supported by your model. It can make unlocking and authentication more convenient. Apple says biometric data is kept on the device and is not stored elsewhere.
Turn on Find My iPhone
Enable Find My iPhone to help locate the device if it is lost or stolen. Check the iCloud options during setup as well, and choose the features that should synchronize or protect your information.

Activate cellular service on the iPhone Air
Cellular activation depends on the iPhone model, carrier, and region. Apple names iPhone Air in its eSIM guidance, but that does not mean every activation method is available for every carrier or location. Ask your carrier which method applies to your line before starting.
Choose the carrier-supported eSIM method
Depending on carrier support, eSIM activation may be offered during iPhone setup through eSIM Carrier Activation or Quick Transfer. Other possible methods include scanning a QR code or using the carrier’s app. Follow the carrier’s instructions if the option you expect does not appear. Apple’s cellular setup guidance describes these options and their availability conditions.
If you transfer a phone number to the new iPhone and activation succeeds, that number stops working on the previous iPhone. Make sure you are ready to move the line before completing the transfer.

Set up two lines, if you use Dual SIM
If you have two cellular plans, you can label each plan, choose a default number for calls and messages, and select which line uses cellular data. This makes it easier to distinguish personal and work lines, for example. An iPhone uses one cellular data network at a time. Finish setup without rushing the transfer
Once the account, security, recovery, and cellular choices are in place, allow any transfer or background download to finish. If something differs from the steps described here—especially an eSIM option—check with your carrier, because the available screens and activation paths depend on its support and your region.
