Quick Start can transfer content to a new iPad, but it is optional: you can set the iPad up manually and use it as a companion rather than a copy of your phone. Which features work depends on your Apple Account, the iPad mini model, software versions, and—in the case of calls—your carrier and network.
Choose whether to transfer or start with a clean iPad
Quick Start is for setting up a new device by transferring information from a nearby iPhone or iPad. It is not required to make the two devices work together. If you want the tablet to have selected information rather than a full phone restore, set it up manually and enable chosen iCloud services afterward.

Apple’s iPad setup guide covers setup using another device or manually. For Quick Start, the source iPhone needs Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on; keep the devices near each other and follow the on-screen prompts. See Apple’s Quick Start instructions for the transfer flow and choices.

- Prepare the connection and account. Have Wi-Fi or another internet connection available, and make sure you can sign in to the Apple Account used on your iPhone.
- Choose a setup route. During initial setup, use Quick Start if you want to transfer data, or select manual setup if you want to begin without a full-device transfer. Follow the prompts on the iPad.
- Sign in with the same Apple Account. This gives the iPad access to the Apple services and Continuity features supported by both devices. Apple explains the relationship between its services and cross-device features in its Continuity overview.
- Choose what to sync. In iPad Settings, open your Apple Account settings and iCloud, then enable the services or data types you want available on the tablet. Check the corresponding settings on the iPhone as well.
Apple’s iCloud overview explains that supported information stays up to date across devices signed in to the same account. This does not mean every third-party app syncs its data: app support and the app’s own account or sync settings can determine what appears on the iPad.

Use shared information and Continuity features
iCloud syncing
Enable only the categories you want on both devices. For example, turning on a supported iCloud service makes its data available across signed-in devices; leaving a service off keeps that category from being shared through that iCloud setting. Available categories and labels can vary with software version.
Handoff
Handoff lets you continue work in a compatible app on another device. Turn on Handoff on both the iPhone and iPad, use the same Apple Account, and make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on. The app must support Handoff. Apple lists setup details in its Handoff guide.

Universal Clipboard
With the same Apple Account, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled, and Handoff turned on, copy text or other supported content on one device and paste it on the other. Apple’s Universal Clipboard guide lists iPad mini 2 or later among the compatible models. That minimum applies to Universal Clipboard, not automatically to every Continuity feature.
iPhone calls on the iPad
- On the iPhone, go to Settings > Apps > Phone > Calls on Other Devices.
- Turn on Allow Calls on Other Devices, then enable the iPad mini in the device list.
- Keep Wi-Fi on for both devices, connect them to the same Wi-Fi network, and use the same Apple Account. Apple also says the phone number should be enabled in FaceTime settings on both devices.
Apple’s instructions for making and receiving calls on other devices describe the requirements. Carrier support affects Wi-Fi Calling, and cellular charges may apply; confirm availability and charges with your carrier.

Check compatibility when a feature is missing
Continuity is not a single all-or-nothing compatibility switch. Requirements vary by feature, device generation, and operating-system version, so an iPad mini that supports one feature may not support another. Apple’s Continuity system requirements lists requirements by feature. Check the specific feature against both devices and their installed software rather than relying on a blanket claim about every iPad mini.

- A shared iCloud item is missing: confirm both devices use the same Apple Account and that the relevant iCloud service is enabled on each. For third-party apps, check the app’s own sync settings and account.
- Handoff or clipboard sharing fails: confirm Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Handoff are enabled on both devices, and verify the app supports Handoff when continuing app activity.
- Calls do not ring on the iPad: check Calls on Other Devices on the iPhone, the same-account and same-Wi-Fi conditions, and the FaceTime phone-number setting. If the carrier feature is unavailable, call relay may not work as expected.
- A feature is absent from settings: compare the model and software version on both devices with Apple’s requirements for that particular feature.
