You can connect an external SSD to either handheld through a dock or hub, but the setup steps differ. On Steam Deck, a documented way to format and manage a drive is through Steam > Settings > Storage. For ROG Ally, ASUS’s cited support guidance covers microSD expansion, not a USB SSD setup sequence, so use Windows’ drive-management options for your exact Ally model rather than assuming the Steam Deck procedure applies.
Check the dock and SSD connection before you begin
Use a dock or hub port that its documentation identifies as supporting USB data. A USB-C-shaped port does not necessarily carry data, and port functions vary by dock. Check the port map and power specifications for your dock, SSD, and handheld.

For Steam Deck, Valve says most USB-C-compliant hubs and docks work because the Deck is a general-purpose PC. Thunderbolt and DisplayLink docks may work, but Valve does not officially support them. If you want to power the Deck through a dock or hub, Valve requires USB-C Power Delivery (PD) passthrough. Some docks reserve power for attached peripherals, which can cause a slow-charging warning. Valve’s docking guide explains the compatibility and power caveats.
The original 2023 ROG Ally has a USB Type-C combo port with USB 3.2 Gen 2 and DisplayPort 1.4, according to ASUS’s specifications. Confirm the port and dock details for your particular Ally model. ASUS’s Ally FAQ specifies a 65 W supplied AC adapter; that figure is the adapter specification, not the power draw or charging performance of every docked setup.

Set up an external SSD on Steam Deck
The following format-and-manage sequence is documented in a Nextorage portable SSD manual for Steam Deck. It is vendor-specific guidance, not a guarantee that every SSD or dock has identical behavior. Formatting erases the drive, so copy off anything you need first.
- Connect the SSD to a data-capable USB port on the dock or hub, then connect the dock to the Steam Deck. Connect power to the dock if you want to charge the Deck through it.
- On the Deck, press the Steam button and open Settings > Storage.
- Select the external drive, choose the format option, and follow the on-screen confirmation steps.
- To install a game on the SSD, choose it as the install destination. To relocate existing game data, use the Storage screen’s move option.
- Before disconnecting the SSD while the Deck is running, open Settings > Storage and eject the drive.
The Nextorage manual warns that formatting for Steam Deck may make the drive unusable on devices other than Steam Deck. Decide whether you need to share the SSD with a PC or another handheld before formatting it. Do not treat Steam Deck’s ext4-with-casefolding guidance for microSD cards as a universal format recommendation for USB external SSDs; Valve’s FAQ discusses that microSD-specific detail.

- SATA DRIVES ONLY — 2.5in & 3.5in: Works with SATA I/II/III hard drives and SSDs. Does NOT support IDE/PATA, M.2 NVMe, M.2 SATA, SAS, or drives already in a USB enclosure. Check your drive's connector before ordering — a bare SATA drive has a wide flat L-shaped edge connector, not a ribbon cable or a small M.2 gold-finger card.
- USB TYPE-A HOST CABLE — NOT A USB-C PORT: The included host cable ends in USB Type-A and plugs into a USB 3.0 Type-A port. If your computer has only USB-C ports, you will need a USB-C to USB-A adapter, which is not included. For stable operation plug directly into the computer — USB hubs and USB 2.0 ports may cause intermittent disconnections.
- REAL-WORLD SPEED, NOT INTERFACE MATH: USB 3.0 with UASP support (UASP-capable host required). Typical mechanical HDD transfer speeds are 100-160 MB/s, which is the drive's own limit, not the port's; SSD speeds vary up to the USB interface maximum. Backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.
- 12V POWER ADAPTER INCLUDED — REQUIRED FOR 3.5in DRIVES: A 12V/2A AC power adapter is in the box and a wall outlet is needed. 3.5in HDDs cannot run on USB power alone — without the adapter the drive will fail to spin up or drop out during use. 2.5in drives are generally bus-powered, but the adapter is recommended for stability.
- PLUG AND PLAY, TOOL-FREE, HOT-SWAP: No drivers on Windows 10/11, macOS, or Linux. Lay-flat bay accepts a bare drive without tools, swaps without rebooting, and an LED shows power and activity. Note: S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics are not passed through the USB bridge, and on macOS a drive may need remounting after sleep. Drive not included.
Set up an external SSD on ROG Ally
For the Ally, first connect the SSD to a dock port documented for data, then connect the dock to the handheld. Make sure the drive appears in Windows before choosing it as a game library or using it for files. Windows may ask you to initialize or format a new drive; formatting erases its contents, so back up first and check whether you need the drive to remain compatible with another device.

It does not document a USB SSD format, game-install, or safe-eject procedure. Use Windows and the game launcher’s own storage controls for your specific model, and do not apply the Steam Deck formatting steps as an ASUS-approved Ally workflow.

Dock or direct connection: what to choose
| Setup choice | What to check | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Dock or hub | A documented data port, and—if powering Steam Deck through it—USB-C PD passthrough. Check the dock’s power allocation for attached peripherals. | Useful when you also need charging or other peripherals, but an unsuitable port or limited power allocation can prevent the expected connection or trigger a slow-charge warning. |
| Direct USB-C connection | Whether the handheld’s port and the SSD cable or adapter support data and fit the specific model. | A dock is unnecessary if the connection meets your needs; it also provides no extra ports or dock-based charging. |
| Steam Deck-managed format | Whether the drive must also work on a PC or another device; back up before formatting. | The cited Nextorage manual warns its Steam Deck format may reduce cross-device usability. |
| ROG Ally Windows setup | Exact Ally model, dock port functions, and Windows’ recognition and handling of the drive. | ASUS’s cited storage guidance describes microSD expansion, not a USB SSD procedure. |
There is no comparative external-SSD speed or reliability benchmark in the cited sources, so a dock should not be treated as a way to guarantee faster game loading or better performance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot a drive that does not appear
- Check that the SSD is connected to a dock port documented for USB data, not merely a USB-C port.
- Reconnect the drive and dock, then check the operating system’s storage view. On Steam Deck, open Settings > Storage; on Ally, check whether Windows recognizes the drive.
- For Steam Deck charging issues, confirm that the dock or hub provides USB-C PD passthrough and review how much power it allocates to downstream devices.
- Consult the dock’s port and power documentation and verify that the SSD cable or adapter is appropriate for the connection.
- If a Steam Deck dock’s USB or display behavior is unreliable, Valve recommends testing the dock with another USB-C device. Its docking guide also provides dock firmware reset and update guidance.
Compatibility can vary by dock, cable, enclosure, drive, operating system, and handheld model; the cited guidance does not establish that every combination will work identically.
