Enigmatica 4 is an archived Minecraft 1.14.4 modpack. The last server package listed for it is Enigmatica 4 Server 0.5.5, uploaded on May 23, 2020, and built with Forge 1.14.4-28.2.16. To run it reliably, use 64-bit Java 8, assign 4–8 GB of memory, install the files in a normal local folder, and have every player use the same pack release.

This guide walks through a clean installation, first launch, network access for friends, safe updates, and recovery from the problems most likely to occur with this older pack.

What you need before installing

Enigmatica 4 is no longer in active development, so treat version matching as a requirement rather than an optional precaution. The instructions below target the dedicated Enigmatica4Server-0.5.5.zip package, which is 131.0 MB and contains the server files for Minecraft 1.14.4 and Forge 1.14.4-28.2.16.

Item Requirement for this setup Why it matters
Minecraft/modpack Enigmatica 4 for Minecraft 1.14.4 The server and clients must use the same game and modpack generation.
Server package Enigmatica 4 Server 0.5.5 This is the specific dedicated-server release documented here.
Forge 1.14.4-28.2.16 It is the Forge build bundled with the 0.5.5 server release.
Java 64-bit Java 8 Enigmatica’s Java guidance places Minecraft 1.16 and earlier on Java 8; Enigmatica 4 targets 1.14.4.
Memory At least 4 GB; 4–8 GB is the usual allocation Modded Minecraft needs substantially more memory than a vanilla server.
Storage location An empty folder on a local disk Synced folders such as OneDrive can lock files while the installer is writing them.
Network A local network for testing; router and firewall access for remote players Players outside your home network may need Java allowed through the firewall and port 25565 forwarded.

Install the correct Java version

Why Java 8 is required

Use a 64-bit Java 8 runtime, not a current Java release selected merely because it is newer. Enigmatica’s Java guidance states that all of its modpacks require 64-bit Java and identifies Java 8 for Minecraft versions through 1.16. A 32-bit runtime cannot address enough memory for a large modpack, and an incompatible major version can stop Forge before the server reaches its console.

Minecraft - Bedrock Edition PS4
  • Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
  • discover community creations in the new in-game store
  • access new mini games and game modes through servers

Windows

Install a 64-bit Temurin 8 build from Adoptium. During setup, note the installation directory so you can verify that the server launcher is finding Java 8 rather than another Java installation already on the computer. If the server later reports an unsupported Java version, correct the system or launcher Java path before changing the server files.

Ubuntu or Debian

Install the Java 8 runtime with:

sudo apt-get install openjdk-8-jre

On macOS or another Linux distribution, install a 64-bit Java 8 package supplied for that operating system, then confirm that the shell resolves that Java installation when you start the server.

Download and install Enigmatica 4 Server 0.5.5

  1. Download the dedicated server archive. Use the Enigmatica 4 project’s server-download entry and select Enigmatica4Server-0.5.5.zip, rather than downloading only the client modpack.
  2. Create an empty local directory. For example, make a folder dedicated to this server on a local SSD or hard drive. Do not place it inside OneDrive or another continuously synchronized directory.
  3. Extract the ZIP into that directory. Preserve the folder structure supplied by the archive. Do not run the installer from inside the compressed ZIP.
  4. Start the installer for your operating system. On Windows, run start-server.bat. On macOS or Linux, run start-server.sh. Leave the window open while Forge and the pack files are installed.
  5. Accept the EULA when prompted. Enter TRUE exactly at the prompt and press Enter. The server cannot complete its normal startup until the EULA has been accepted.
  6. Wait for the first startup to finish. The first run can create files and install libraries before a usable server console appears. Do not interrupt it while those files are being generated.
  7. Close the server after it has fully started. The Enigmatica server guide documents a first-start console-input workaround: after the initial startup completes, close the server and run the same start script a second time.

After the second launch, stop the server from its console before making configuration changes or copying a world. A clean stop lets the server flush region, player and configuration data to disk.

Confirm that the installation is usable

Check the server release

Keep a note of the pack release and Forge version in the server folder or your maintenance notes: Enigmatica 4 Server 0.5.5, Minecraft 1.14.4, Forge 1.14.4-28.2.16. This prevents a later client update from silently creating a version mismatch.

Check memory before inviting players

Allocate no less than 4 GB of RAM to the server process. The Enigmatica server guide describes 4–8 GB as the usual range, while the CurseForge project guidance gives 4 GB as the minimum. Start at 4 GB for a small private test and increase the allocation within the 8 GB range if the machine has room and the server is consistently exhausting memory. No official source publishes a player-capacity benchmark for this pack, so do not convert the memory range into a guaranteed player count.

Keep the host separate from your gaming session when possible

The official server guidance advises against running the server on the same machine you use to play. A separate computer avoids competition between the game client and the Java server for CPU, memory and disk access. If you must combine them, leave operating-system memory and headroom for the client instead of assigning all available RAM to the server.

Let friends join from outside your home network

Test locally first

Start the server and connect from a Minecraft client on the same local network using the host computer’s local address. A successful local connection proves that the pack, Java runtime and server process are working before you introduce router or Internet variables.

Allow Java through the host firewall

Minecraft’s official server guidance notes that external players may require firewall configuration. Create an inbound rule allowing the Java runtime used by the server, or approve the prompt shown by the operating system when the server first listens for connections. Restrict the rule to the needed network profile when your operating system offers that choice.

Forward the default Minecraft port only when needed

The default Java Edition server port is 25565. If your router separates the Internet from the host computer, create a port-forwarding rule for TCP traffic on 25565 to the host’s local IP address. Give the host a reserved local address so the forwarding rule does not break after a DHCP change. You do not need to expose the port when every player is on the same local network or when your hosting arrangement already supplies a public endpoint.

Give players the right address

Players on your home network use the server computer’s local address. Players on the Internet use the public address supplied by your connection, together with port 25565 when their client does not assume the default. Never publish credentials or administrative files with the address, and remember that changing public IP addresses can make an old address stop working.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match the client pack exactly

Every player needs the Enigmatica 4 client for Minecraft 1.14.4 that corresponds to the server’s 0.5.5 release. A client with a different pack revision, Forge build or set of mods can fail during the handshake, disconnect immediately or produce missing-mod errors. Have players update or roll back their client profile to the server’s documented versions before troubleshooting the network.

Back up the world before any change

Stop the server cleanly, then copy the complete world directory to a separate disk or backup location. Keep at least one backup that is not inside the live server folder. Include the server configuration and mod-related directories when you make a milestone backup, so you can restore the complete state rather than only terrain.

The 0.5.5 release notes warn that updates can affect existing worlds and may remove blocks when a world comes from an older release. Treat an update as a potentially one-way data change: make and verify a backup before replacing files, and test the updated copy before allowing players to continue on the original world.

Update an Enigmatica 4 server safely

Self-hosted installation

  1. Record the current server release, Forge build and the date of your last known-good backup.
  2. Stop the running server and wait until the console confirms that shutdown is complete.
  3. Copy the world and the server files you may need to restore to a separate backup location.
  4. Download the intended Enigmatica server release and follow the official installation process in a new, empty local folder.
  5. Do not overwrite the only copy of the old server. Preserve it until the new installation has loaded a test copy of the world.
  6. Copy or restore the existing world into the new installation only as directed by the Enigmatica server guide, then start the new server and inspect the world before inviting players.

Hosted-server installation

Hosting panels differ, but the Enigmatica guide identifies the pack and Forge directories that need replacement during a hosted update. Plan to replace the relevant versions of configs, defaultconfigs, kubejs, libraries, mods and patchouli_books. The guide also calls out old setup files that may need to be removed. Follow the host’s file manager or SFTP procedure, stop the server first, and keep a downloadable backup before deleting or replacing anything.

Validate the updated world

Launch the updated server with the backup world and watch the console for missing mods, registry errors or world-conversion warnings. Join with one matching client, inspect a few important bases and verify that machines, blocks and inventories are present. If blocks have disappeared or the server will not load the world, stop it and restore the pre-update backup rather than repeatedly starting the damaged copy.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Both approaches can run an archived Forge pack, but the practical difference is who owns the operating-system and network work. Official Enigmatica pages do not publish a universal monthly price, guaranteed CPU allocation or player-capacity figure for this pack, and provider support for an old 1.14.4 server must be confirmed before purchase.

Decision point Self-hosting at home Managed server
Upfront and monthly cost No hosting subscription, but you provide the computer, electricity and Internet connection. Recurring fee set by the provider; current pricing is not stated by the official Enigmatica documentation.
RAM and CPU You choose the hardware and should reserve 4–8 GB for the server without starving the rest of the machine. You select an advertised allocation; verify that the plan supplies at least 4 GB and supports Java 8 and Forge 1.14.4.
Setup effort You install Java, extract the archive, run the scripts, configure the firewall and possibly forward a router port. The panel may automate Java and networking, but you still upload the correct server files and accept the EULA.
File and mod control Full access to every file and the operating system. Usually file-manager or SFTP access; confirm that the provider permits custom Forge 1.14.4 files.
Backups and updates You must schedule, verify and restore backups yourself. Some hosts offer automated backups and update tools; check whether they preserve the world and the Enigmatica directories listed above.
Network exposure and reliability Your home connection, public IP and router determine reachability and uptime. The provider supplies a public endpoint and datacenter connection, but reliability and support vary by plan.
Archived-pack support You control compatibility as long as the machine can run Java 8 and the pack. Confirm support before paying: an archived 1.14.4 pack may not be available in a one-click installer.

Troubleshooting common failures

The launcher reports an unsupported Java version

  • Confirm that the installed runtime is 64-bit Java 8, not a newer major version selected by the operating system.
  • On Windows, check the Java path used by the batch file or terminal session.
  • On Linux, verify that the shell’s Java command points to the Java 8 installation you installed for the server.
  • Restart the start script after correcting Java; do not delete the world to solve a runtime-selection problem.

The installer cannot create or change files

Move the extracted server to an empty folder on a local drive. Synced directories can lock files while the installer is writing them. Close file-indexing or synchronization tools temporarily, then run the script again from the local folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The first run appears to ignore console input

Let the initial installation finish, close the server after it has fully started, and run the same start script again. This second launch is the documented workaround for first-start console input.

The server stops because the EULA is not accepted

When prompted, enter TRUE and press Enter. If the prompt has already closed, start the script again and complete the EULA step before attempting to join.

The server runs out of memory or becomes unstable

  • Ensure that at least 4 GB is assigned and that the computer has additional memory for the operating system.
  • Move toward the 4–8 GB range recommended by the Enigmatica guide only when the host has enough physical RAM.
  • Close unnecessary applications and avoid running the server on the same machine as the game client when possible.
  • Do not claim a fixed player limit from the memory number; official sources publish no independent capacity benchmark for Enigmatica 4.

Friends receive a timeout or connection-refused message

  1. Confirm that the server process is running and that a local-network client can join.
  2. Allow the Java runtime through the host firewall.
  3. Check that the router forwards TCP port 25565 to the current local address of the server computer.
  4. Have remote players use the current public address, while local players use the private address.
  5. If the public address is correct and the port is still unreachable, ask the Internet provider whether inbound connections are restricted.

A player is kicked for missing mods or a mismatched version

Compare the client and server against the same target: Enigmatica 4 Server 0.5.5, Minecraft 1.14.4 and Forge 1.14.4-28.2.16. Remove accidental client-only changes and reinstall the matching profile instead of copying random mods into the server.

An update removed blocks or damaged the world

Stop the server immediately and restore the verified pre-update world backup. The 0.5.5 release notes specifically warn that updates can remove blocks in existing worlds, so continuing to play on the altered copy can overwrite the state you need for recovery.

Maintenance checklist

  • Keep a written record of the exact pack and Forge versions in use.
  • Back up the world before every update and before major construction or mod changes.
  • Store at least one backup outside the live server directory.
  • Stop the server cleanly before copying files.
  • Review firewall and port-forwarding rules after changing the host computer’s local address.
  • Require clients to stay on the server’s exact Minecraft, Forge and modpack versions.
  • Re-test a restored backup periodically so you know the files are usable, not merely present.
  • Remember that Enigmatica 4 is archived; compatibility with modern Java, launchers or hosting panels should not be assumed.
