You can run a YouTube Live encoder on an EC2 instance in India by launching a Linux server in Mumbai or Hyderabad, connecting over restricted SSH, configuring YouTube’s ingest details in an encoder, and testing the stream before relying on it. The setup can support a 24/7 operating pattern, but a single instance does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming; you need monitoring and a recovery plan.
Choose an India region and verify instance availability
AWS lists two India regions: Asia Pacific (Mumbai), ap-south-1, and Asia Pacific (Hyderabad), ap-south-2. Available EC2 instance families can vary by region and availability zone, so confirm that the type you want is offered in the exact location you select. Compare the regions using the route and stability you measure to YouTube ingest, current regional prices, proximity to your operators or audience, and any data-residency needs. Neither region is established as inherently faster for YouTube streaming.

Select an instance for the encoder workload
There is no certified EC2 size established here for continuous YouTube encoding. A small instance may be a test candidate, not a production recommendation: encode at the actual settings you plan to use and observe sustained CPU or accelerator use, memory, network behavior, and stream health before relying on it.

- For software encoding, test the chosen codec and resolution under sustained load; a configuration that works briefly may not remain stable over time.
- If you plan to use hardware acceleration, verify that the selected instance actually offers compatible acceleration in the region and zone.
- Review the instance’s network specification, but do not treat it as proof of end-to-end throughput to YouTube ingest.
AWS explains how instance network performance varies by type in EC2 instance network bandwidth. Validate the chosen host from the location where it will run.
Launch Linux and restrict SSH access
- In the EC2 console, start an instance launch and select a Linux AMI and an instance type available in your chosen region and zone.
- Configure a security group that permits inbound SSH (normally TCP port 22) only from your current public IP address. Do not expose SSH to all IPv4 addresses.
- Create or select a key pair and store its private key securely. You will need it, along with the instance’s connection details, to connect.
- Launch the instance and connect using the AWS-provided instructions for your operating system and key format.
Follow AWS’s current guide, Connect to your Linux instance using SSH. If your public IP changes, update the security group’s allowed source rather than opening SSH broadly.
Configure YouTube Live and encoder settings
In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream, then copy its server URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Use RTMPS where your encoder supports it; YouTube recommends this secure extension to RTMP.

For H.264, YouTube’s current guidance gives these example bitrates. Match the encoder to your intended output rather than selecting a bitrate independently of resolution and frame rate.

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and a maximum keyframe interval of four seconds; it supports up to 60 fps. Recommendations for H.265 and AV1 vary with output settings, so use the current YouTube encoder settings for the codec and resolution you choose.
Check outbound capacity and test before relying on the stream
YouTube recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom. If you send both a primary and backup stream, allow for their combined outbound demand. For example, a 14 Mbps primary needs at least 16.8 Mbps when applying 20% headroom to that stream alone; a simultaneous backup requires additional capacity. This is encoder guidance, not a measurement of EC2-to-YouTube throughput.

- Start a private or otherwise suitable test stream using the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval.
- Watch YouTube’s stream health and the encoder’s status while the test runs; check for dropped frames, connection interruptions, and sustained resource pressure.
- Repeat the test long enough to expose problems that may not appear immediately, and test from the selected region and instance type.
- Do not treat an EC2 network specification or a brief successful test as a guarantee of uninterrupted operation.
YouTube’s live streaming tips advise testing, maintaining adequate outbound bandwidth, and using a reliable connection. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming and copyright rules before broadcasting; only use content you have the rights to stream. A stream key and a technically healthy connection do not grant content rights.

A single EC2 instance, encoder process, and network path are potential failure points. Decide how you will notice an encoder exit or lost stream, how it will be restarted, and who will respond if automatic restart does not restore the broadcast. Keep configuration and recovery steps somewhere accessible if the instance becomes unavailable.
For a more resilient design, evaluate a backup encoder or instance and test failover rather than assuming it will work. A second host can add compute and network costs, and switching streams may require operational steps. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover, but the available AWS and YouTube guidance does not provide a complete EC2 high-availability recipe or promise that an individual live stream can run indefinitely.

Estimate the full cost before running continuously
EC2 On-Demand instances accrue charges while in the running state, billed per second with a 60-second minimum. A 24/7 deployment also needs a live estimate for the selected instance and India region, along with applicable storage, public IPv4, and internet data-transfer charges. These inputs vary, so there is no reliable monthly total without your configuration and current pricing.
Check EC2 On-Demand pricing and the AWS Pricing Calculator before launch, and revisit the estimate if you change instance size, storage, or traffic. Stopping an instance changes compute billing but does not necessarily remove charges for other retained resources.
