Before creating storage, decide how much usable capacity you need versus how much drive-failure redundancy you want; keep a separate backup either way.
Before you begin: confirm the model and gather what you need
Check the product label and confirm that the NAS is the AS6702T v2. The original AS6702T and the v2 are not identical: ASUSTOR’s v2 specification lists two 5-Gigabit Ethernet ports. The model-specific instructions and ADM image must match the v2, so do not rely on a guide or firmware file for the older model.

| Item | What the AS6702T v2 supports | What to check before setup |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Intel Celeron N5105 quad-core | No setup decision is required, but confirm the model if the documentation differs. |
| Memory | 4 GB DDR4, expandable to 16 GB | If you have upgraded memory and initialization fails, try returning it to the original configuration while troubleshooting. |
| SATA drive bays | Two bays for 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA drives | Check the exact drive model against ASUSTOR’s current compatibility information. |
| M.2 slots | Four slots for optional expansion | M.2 storage is not required for basic setup; consult the model-specific guide and compatibility information before installing it. |
| Network | Two 5-Gigabit Ethernet ports | The router or switch, cabling, and setup computer also affect the link negotiated across the network. |
Have the NAS, its power adapter, a LAN cable, compatible drive or drives, and a Phillips screwdriver available for the relevant installation steps. Use the AS6702T v2 Quick Installation Guide for tray orientation, screw placement, and any model-specific hardware directions. Those details can vary by hardware design, so follow the illustration for this exact model rather than forcing a tray or substituting steps from another NAS.
Choose compatible storage before installing anything
The two SATA bays are the basic storage locations. The four M.2 slots are optional expansion and are not a prerequisite for initializing the NAS. ASUSTOR’s compatibility information is the place to check a specific make and model; the fact that a drive is SATA, 2.5-inch, or 3.5-inch does not establish that every individual drive is supported or suitable.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check the exact model number. Compare the manufacturer and full model identifier against ASUSTOR’s current compatibility information, not just the drive’s brand or capacity.
- Match the drive to the workload. Consider capacity, workload suitability, noise, and cost. A drive choice for a quiet home archive may differ from one for frequent shared access, but the available evidence does not identify a universally best drive for every use.
- Decide whether capacity or redundancy matters more. The ADM storage wizard presents choices based on the installed drives and supported configurations. Read the description and expected usable capacity for the option shown in your current ADM release before committing.
- Plan for backups separately. A redundant storage layout can help maintain availability after a drive failure, but it does not protect against accidental deletion, file corruption, theft, or other failures affecting the NAS. Keep a separate backup of important files.
Do not install a set of drives on the assumption that the most capacity or a particular redundancy arrangement is automatically best. With only two bays, the balance between usable space and protection against a drive failure is especially important. Your files, backup plan, and capacity needs should determine the choice—not a generic recommendation detached from your use case.
How to compare hard drives and SSDs
Start with the full purchase cost, then consider the cost of usable capacity rather than the sticker price alone. Two lower-priced drives may provide more space but no protection from a single-drive failure, while a redundant arrangement sacrifices part of the raw capacity. Also compare the manufacturer’s workload suitability, expected noise, heat, and replacement availability. An SSD can be attractive for noise-sensitive use, but the model must still appear on ASUSTOR’s compatibility information and its capacity may cost more. Do not treat a drive’s interface label as proof that it is appropriate for continuous NAS workloads.
Keep the comparison tied to the two-bay design. If you need one copy with maximum space, examine the usable-capacity figure the current ADM wizard reports. If continued access after one drive fails matters more, examine the redundancy option and the remaining capacity. In either case, budget separately for a backup destination; redundancy and backup solve different problems.

Install the SATA drives
- Power off the NAS and place it on a stable surface, following the Quick Installation Guide’s handling directions.
- Remove a drive tray as shown in the AS6702T v2 guide. Check the orientation of the tray and the drive before fastening anything.
- Fit the compatible 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch SATA drive using the screws and mounting points specified in the guide. Use a Phillips screwdriver where required; do not force a drive into the tray.
- Return the tray to its bay and repeat for any additional SATA drive you plan to use.
- If you are installing optional M.2 storage, use the model-specific hardware instructions and compatibility information. You can complete basic setup without M.2 drives.
Use the official quick-install guide rather than guessing which side of the tray faces outward or which fasteners apply. If the physical drive does not sit securely or the tray does not slide in normally, stop and recheck orientation and the model-specific instructions instead of applying pressure.
Optional M.2 expansion: do not confuse it with the basic setup
The AS6702T v2 has four M.2 slots in addition to its two SATA bays. They are optional expansion, not a requirement for installing ADM or creating the initial SATA volume. If you add an NVMe module, verify its exact model in ASUSTOR’s compatibility information and follow the AS6702T v2 hardware guide for access, mounting, and screw placement.
Decide what role the M.2 devices will have in the current ADM release before purchasing them. The presence of four slots does not by itself tell you which storage features or layouts the wizard will offer. Do not remove the SATA drives or alter an existing volume merely to add M.2 storage without reading the applicable ADM guide and backing up important data.

Connect the NAS to your local network
- Connect a LAN cable from a NAS Ethernet port to your router or switch.
- Connect the supplied power adapter to the NAS and power it on according to the guide.
- Connect the computer you will use for setup to the same local network. If you plan to use AiMaster, connect the mobile device to that local network as well.
- Check that the NAS network indicator is lit. If it is not, check the cable seating and the router or switch connection before proceeding to discovery.
The two 5-Gigabit ports describe the NAS interface capability, not the speed every connected device will achieve. A 5-Gigabit link requires the rest of the network path to support it as well: the router or switch port, cabling, and client-side network interface all matter. If one part of the path supports a lower link speed, the NAS port rating alone cannot raise it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Part of the connection | What to verify |
|---|---|
| NAS | Use an Ethernet port on the AS6702T v2 and confirm its network indicator is lit. |
| Router or switch | Check that the connected port and device support the link capability you intend to use. |
| Cable | Ensure it is fully seated and suitable for the network equipment in the path. |
| Setup computer | Keep it on the same local network as the NAS during discovery and initialization. |
Do not use the port rating as a promised file-transfer speed. Actual throughput also depends on the client interface, the network path, the drives, the selected storage layout, and the workload. The specification establishes interface capability, not a result for an unspecified configuration.
Discover the NAS and start ADM initialization
ASUSTOR lists two setup routes: ASUSTOR Control Center on a supported desktop or laptop, and the AiMaster mobile app. Control Center can find the NAS on the local network and open the ADM login or initialization interface.
- Install ASUSTOR Control Center on a supported computer, or use AiMaster on a mobile device.
- Make sure the setup device and the NAS are connected to the same local network.
- Scan or search for devices. Select the uninitialized AS6702T v2 when it appears.
- Open the initialization interface from Control Center, or continue through AiMaster’s setup flow.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to install or initialize ADM. Use the model-specific downloads and guides from ASUSTOR’s download center if you need the software files or setup documentation.
- When the storage setup appears, review the available layout descriptions and usable-capacity information before confirming a choice.
ASUSTOR’s download center listed ADM 5.1.4.RL21, released September 3, 2026, for the model at the time of the current product information. That is a dated listing, not a promise that this will remain the newest release. Check the AS6702T v2 download page for the current ADM files and guides when setting up your unit.
ADM support for this model begins with ADM 5.0 or later. Use the live model-specific download page rather than assuming an older image is suitable. There is no reliable universal setup duration to quote. Initialization time can depend on network access, whether ADM must be downloaded, the installed drives, and the choices made in the wizard. Let the on-screen process finish, and do not interrupt power while the NAS is applying changes or installing software.

Initialize without an internet connection
If the NAS cannot reach the internet, ASUSTOR’s offline procedure uses a manually downloaded ADM image. Download the image on an internet-connected computer and make sure it is specifically for the AS6702T v2; a file for another model is not an interchangeable substitute.

- On an internet-connected computer, open ASUSTOR’s model-specific download center and download the ADM image for the AS6702T v2.
- Connect the setup computer and NAS to the same local network, even though the NAS itself has no internet access.
- Open ASUSTOR Control Center and locate the uninitialized NAS.
- Choose the manual image upload option in the initialization flow and provide the downloaded ADM image.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to finish initialization.
If the NAS does not appear in Control Center, first resolve local discovery: verify that both devices are on the same network and that the NAS network indicator is lit. Being offline from the internet does not remove the need for a working local connection between the NAS and setup device.
Choose the initial storage layout carefully
The storage wizard’s options and exact wording can differ with ADM releases and the drives installed. ASUSTOR’s published product information establishes that the NAS has two SATA bays, but it does not establish one universally right first volume for every owner. Use the current ADM Storage Manager or user guide to verify the precise options offered by your software version.
- If usable capacity is the priority, compare how much space each offered layout makes available and decide whether that capacity meets your needs.
- If drive-failure availability is the priority, inspect the wizard’s explanation of redundancy and the usable capacity it reports. Redundancy affects the space available for files and does not replace a backup.
- If the data is important, decide where the separate backup will live before treating the NAS as the only copy.
- If you are uncertain, pause before confirming the storage configuration. Check the current user guide and the wizard’s warnings; do not infer a configuration from a name alone.
Creating or changing a storage arrangement can involve initializing drives and may erase existing data. Read each confirmation screen and back up any data already on the drives before proceeding. Drive capacity, the specific choices the wizard offers, and the consequences of selecting each one should be considered together.
Power and placement considerations
ASUSTOR’s AS6702T v2 datasheet lists 18.8 W in operation, 12.9 W during disk hibernation, and 1.18 W in sleep. These are published product figures, not a guarantee for every drive combination or workload. Drive choice, network activity, installed M.2 devices, and system settings can affect real consumption. Use the figures as planning references rather than as an electricity bill estimate.
Leave the chassis on a stable surface with the ventilation openings unobstructed, and avoid disconnecting power during ADM installation or storage initialization. If low noise matters, include drive acoustics in the purchase comparison; a NAS enclosure’s published power figure does not establish how loud a particular drive set will be.
Troubleshoot common setup and initialization problems
The NAS does not appear in Control Center
- Confirm the NAS and computer are on the same local network.
- Check that the NAS network indicator is lit and that the LAN cable is seated at both ends.
- Check the router or switch connection and retry the scan.
- Try AiMaster as the alternate discovery and setup route listed by ASUSTOR.
If the devices are separated across different networks, discovery may not work as expected. Bring the setup computer and NAS onto the same local network for initialization before investigating more complex network configurations.

The ADM image cannot be used or initialization will not proceed
- Confirm that the image was downloaded for the exact AS6702T v2 model.
- If working offline, use Control Center’s manual image upload path and follow the current on-screen prompts.
- Use the model-specific download center for the image and guides rather than a file intended for a different NAS.
- Check the current ASUSTOR support instructions for the relevant ADM version before trying another image.
The browser-based initialization page behaves incorrectly
ASUSTOR’s troubleshooting guidance recommends clearing the browser cache and retrying. Reopen the initialization interface from Control Center after clearing it. If the issue remains, restart the NAS and retry the setup flow.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Initialization fails after a memory upgrade or with a previously used drive
ASUSTOR recommends temporarily returning upgraded memory to the original configuration as a troubleshooting step. If you are using drives that were previously installed elsewhere, residual data on them can cause conflicts during setup. ASUSTOR also recommends trying another compatible drive if the issue persists. Before swapping drives or taking any action that initializes them, consider whether they contain data you need to preserve.
Try ASUSTOR’s remove-and-reconnect troubleshooting sequence
ASUSTOR describes an alternative procedure for an initialization problem: shut down the NAS, remove all drives, boot it, reconnect with Control Center, then install the drives and retry initialization. This is a troubleshooting route, not a way to preserve data on disks. Initializing drives can erase their contents; do not proceed if you need data on them and do not have a backup. Consult the current support page for the exact instructions and warnings for your situation.
- Shut down the NAS before removing drives.
- Remove all drives and start the NAS as directed by ASUSTOR’s current support instructions.
- Use Control Center to reconnect to the NAS.
- Install the drives again using the hardware guide, then retry initialization.
- Read all drive-initialization and data-erasure warnings before confirming any operation.
What to verify before calling setup complete
- The unit is identified as the AS6702T v2, not the older AS6702T.
- The installed SATA drive models were checked against ASUSTOR’s current compatibility information.
- The ADM initialization completed and the NAS is reachable on the local network.
- The chosen storage arrangement matches your capacity and redundancy priorities.
- You have a separate backup plan for files you cannot afford to lose.
- You have checked the model-specific download page for current software and documentation rather than relying indefinitely on a dated ADM listing.
- If you installed M.2 devices, their models and intended role were checked against the current documentation.
- Your router, switch, cabling, and client equipment match the network capability you actually intend to use.

Can I set up the NAS without internet access?
Yes. Download the AS6702T v2 ADM image on an internet-connected computer, put that computer and the NAS on the same local network, find the uninitialized NAS in Control Center, select manual image upload, and complete the prompts.
Why is my NAS missing from ASUSTOR Control Center?
Confirm that the NAS and setup device share the same local network, the LAN cable is seated, the NAS network indicator is lit, and the router or switch connection is active. AiMaster is an alternate discovery route.
Does a 5-Gigabit port guarantee 5-Gigabit transfers?
No. The router or switch port, cabling, client network interface, storage, and workload must also support the intended connection. The NAS port specification alone is not a throughput promise.
Should I choose maximum capacity or redundancy with two drives?
Use the current ADM wizard’s reported usable capacity and redundancy explanation to make the choice. Maximum space and continued availability after a drive failure are different priorities, and either layout still requires a separate backup.
What should I do if initialization fails?
Clear the browser cache and retry, restart the NAS, temporarily return upgraded memory to its original configuration, and try another compatible drive if necessary. Previously used drives can contain residual data that conflicts with initialization. ASUSTOR also documents a remove-all-drives and reconnect sequence; read its warnings because initialization can erase data.
What are the AS6702T v2’s published power figures?
The datasheet lists 18.8 W in operation, 12.9 W during disk hibernation, and 1.18 W in sleep. Actual consumption varies with drives, M.2 devices, network activity, and settings.
The Bottom Line
Set up the ASUSTOR AS6702T v2 with model-compatible drives, a same-network setup device, and the current ADM image. Verify every storage warning before committing, treat redundancy as availability rather than backup, and use ASUSTOR’s model-specific guide whenever hardware or troubleshooting steps are unclear.
