Decide whether to self-host or use managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct access to the operating system, launch command, INI files, updates, and network rules. It also makes you responsible for an always-on machine, power and connectivity, firewall configuration, backups, patching, and recovery. Managed hosting transfers much of that operational work to a provider, but the exact resources and controls differ by plan.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted server | Managed server |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly cost | Not stated; depends on your hardware, electricity, and internet service. | Not stated; depends on the provider and plan. |
| CPU and RAM allocation | You choose the machine and must leave capacity for the operating system. | Specified by the selected plan; verify whether resources are dedicated or shared. |
| Player slots | You set a limit compatible with your hardware and connection. | Usually tied to the plan; confirm the included slot count. |
| Mods | You control installation and version matching. | Check whether the control panel supports the mods and update workflow you need. |
| Backups and restore | You design and test the backup process. | Confirm backup frequency, retention, and whether you can restore individual saves. |
| Location and latency | Determined by where your host and internet connection are located. | Choose an available data-center region close to most players. |
| DDoS protection | Limited to what your network provider and edge equipment supply. | Ask what protection is included and what traffic limits apply. |
| INI-file access | Complete access to GameUserSettings.ini and Game.ini. |
Verify that the panel exposes the settings and permits custom entries. |
No provider is inherently the right choice. If you cannot keep a machine online or cannot safely expose the required network path, managed hosting is usually simpler. If you need unrestricted file and operating-system access, self-hosting is the more flexible option.

Prepare the host
Choose an appropriate machine
Use a Windows or Linux computer with enough free memory and storage for the server files, the saved world, the operating system, and any mods. The published 5.5–7 GiB figure is for the Lost Island server workload, not a recommendation for the total machine size. Leave additional capacity so the operating system and other services do not force the ARK process into swapping. Monitor memory after real players join instead of treating the lower end of the range as a hard maximum.
Fast, reliable storage matters because the server continuously reads and writes world data. Keep the server on a wired connection where possible, and avoid placing the live save directory inside a synchronization folder that might lock or replace files while ARK is running.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Create a dedicated account and directory
Create a directory reserved for the server and, where practical, run it under a service account rather than your personal administrator account. A separate account limits the damage from a compromised mod, script, or exposed management interface. Grant that account write access to the server directory and its save and configuration folders, but avoid giving it unrelated system privileges.
Install SteamCMD using the package or archive appropriate for your operating system. Record the final installation path; every later command depends on using the same location consistently. Keep a separate backup location outside the live server directory.
Install the dedicated server with SteamCMD
Run the documented SteamCMD sequence
Open SteamCMD and run the following sequence, replacing <install_dir> with the directory you created:
force_install_dir <install_dir>
login anonymous
app_update 376030 validate
exit
force_install_dir selects where the dedicated server files are written. login anonymous uses SteamCMD’s anonymous login for this server application. app_update 376030 validate downloads or updates the ARK server and checks the installed files. The command is safe to run again when you need to repair or validate an installation, although it can take time to examine a large library.

Keep the build and clients aligned
Run the update command whenever the server needs a patch or validation. ARK server builds and mods are version-sensitive: a server that has updated while a player’s client has not may reject connections, and a mod that has changed can make an otherwise healthy world fail to load. Coordinate updates with your players, stop the server cleanly before replacing files, and keep a known-good backup before a major change.
Launch Lost Island with the correct map name
Use the exact level identifier
The dedicated-server level name for Lost Island is LostIsland. It is case-sensitive in examples, so do not substitute a spaced title, a hyphenated version, or a different capitalization. A minimal launch pattern is:
ShooterGameServer LostIsland?SessionName=<name>
Run that command from the directory containing the server executable, or use the executable’s full path in a service definition or startup script. On a Windows installation the executable may be presented with its Windows extension; use the filename actually installed on your host. The important parts are the server executable, the LostIsland level token, and a session name that players can recognize.
Add only the query parameters you need
ARK places additional launch settings after the session name as query parameters. The setup reference specifically identifies password, player-location, and third-person options as examples of settings you may add. Keep the command readable and document every option you choose so you can reproduce it after an update. Use the exact parameter spelling and syntax from the current ARK configuration reference; a misspelled parameter may be ignored without an obvious error.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not put secrets directly into a script that is readable by every local user. If you protect the server with a password, restrict access to the startup file and service account, and change the password if the file is exposed.
Make the first start deliberately uneventful
Start with the map and session name, then wait for the server to finish creating its save and configuration structure. Avoid adding a large mod collection or many gameplay overrides on the first boot. A minimal start gives you a known baseline for diagnosing a missing file, a blocked port, or a later configuration error.
Configure the server after its first run
Know which INI file controls what
After the first successful start, stop the server cleanly and open the Saved/Config directory under the installation. The exact platform subdirectory is created by the server; use the files that your installation generated rather than copying a path from another operating system.
GameUserSettings.iniholds player-facing server settings, such as choices exposed to players and administrators through the normal server settings model.Game.iniholds gameplay and spawn overrides. It is the file for deeper rules changes and class or spawn-related adjustments documented by ARK’s configuration reference.
Use the exact key names, capitalization, section headers, and value syntax required by that reference. ARK treats a setting in the wrong file, a malformed section, or an invalid value differently from a valid setting, so a server can start while silently ignoring an edit.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBack up before editing
Copy both INI files and the current save before making a substantial change. Name backups with the date and the change you are about to make. Change one related group of settings at a time, start the server, and test the result before proceeding. If the server stops starting after an edit, restore the last known-good files instead of trying to repair a long block of unknown text in place.
Separate configuration from launch settings
Keep a written record of the launch command and the contents of both INI files. A setting supplied at launch and a setting stored in an INI file may be governed by different parsing rules. Recording the source of each setting prevents you from deleting a command-line option while troubleshooting an INI change, or vice versa.
Open the firewall and router path
Permit the configured game and query traffic
The server must be reachable through two distinct paths: the ARK game traffic that carries player connections and the query traffic used by server browsers to discover and display the server. Allow both configured ports in the host operating-system firewall, using the protocol and port values required by your ARK build and launch configuration. Do not assume that allowing only the game path is sufficient; a server can be reachable by a direct address yet absent from a browser listing when query traffic is blocked.
Because the exact port values are chosen by your server configuration and may be changed deliberately, write down the values you actually use. Ensure no second application is already listening on them. If you change a port later, update the firewall rule, router forwarding rule, and any connection instructions together.

Forward the same ports on the router
- Give the server host a stable address on your local network, either through a DHCP reservation or a static configuration appropriate to your router.
- Create router forwarding rules for the ARK game and query ports, pointing each one to that host address.
- Use the same external and internal port values unless you have a specific reason to translate them, and record any translation clearly for players.
- Save the router configuration, then confirm that the host firewall allows the forwarded traffic.
Forwarding to the wrong local address is a common failure after a router reboot or DHCP lease change. A reservation prevents the forwarding rule from silently targeting another device.
Treat RCON as a separate administrative surface
If you enable remote administration through RCON, create a separate protected rule for its port. Do not expose RCON broadly to the internet. Limit the source addresses when your router or firewall supports that control, use a strong unique password, and disable the service when you do not need remote administration. RCON access is not a substitute for the game or query rules; it is an additional management path with its own risk.
Start, discover, and test the server
Confirm local startup output
Launch the server and watch its console or service log until it has completed initialization and created the expected save and configuration files. A process that exits immediately usually points to an invalid command, a missing or corrupt file, insufficient permissions, or a version mismatch. Preserve the first error lines before restarting; repeated launches can bury the useful message.
Find it in a browser
Use the in-game unofficial server list or the Steam server browser to search for the session name. Discovery depends on query traffic, so a missing listing is a reason to inspect the query firewall and forwarding rule before changing gameplay settings. Confirm that the displayed map is Lost Island and that the player limit and password behavior match your intended configuration.
Test from outside the host’s LAN
A test from the same home network can succeed even when the router does not accept inbound internet traffic. Have a second client connect from outside the host’s LAN, such as a player on another connection. Test both browser discovery and an actual join. If the external test fails, check the public address, router forwarding target, host firewall, and the configured game and query ports in that order.
Do not treat a successful local connection as proof that public players can join. Some routers lack reliable hairpin or loopback support, so the external test is the meaningful check.

Plan memory and capacity for Lost Island
Interpret the 5.5–7 GiB figure correctly
The ARK Official Community Wiki lists Lost Island at 5.5–7 GiB of server memory in a 2026 crawl. That is a published operating range, not a promise that every installation will remain inside it. Player count, the age and complexity of the saved world, and installed mods all increase demand. Measure the running process during busy periods and watch the host’s total available memory.
Leave room for the rest of the host
The operating system, SteamCMD, monitoring tools, backups, and any other services also need memory. If the machine begins swapping, expect longer save operations and unstable performance even when the ARK process itself appears within the published range. Moving unrelated services elsewhere or selecting a larger host is safer than relying on a full machine with no headroom.
Grow in controlled steps
Start with the intended player limit and no unnecessary mods, record memory use after the world has been active, then add changes one at a time. This gives you a baseline and identifies which mod or population increase causes a spike. Keep the player limit, mod list, and observed peak memory in your maintenance notes so you can make a capacity decision before the server becomes unreliable.
Backups, updates, and routine maintenance
Back up the world and configuration
- Stop the server cleanly before copying the live save to avoid capturing a partially written file.
- Back up the save data,
GameUserSettings.ini,Game.ini, launch script, and any mod or administrative notes needed to rebuild the server. - Keep multiple dated generations in a different location or on a different machine from the live server.
- Periodically restore a copy to a test directory so you know the backups are usable, not merely present.
Apply updates deliberately
Before an ARK patch or mod update, announce a maintenance window, stop the server, run app_update 376030 validate, and verify that the installed mod versions are compatible. Keep a pre-update backup. Start the server without unrelated configuration changes, inspect the log, and perform a player connection test before declaring the update complete.
Document recovery
Store the install directory, startup command, port assignments, router target, service-account details, backup location, and current mod list in an administrator-only document. A second trusted administrator should be able to reconstruct the service without guessing which map token or port was used.
Troubleshoot the common failure branches
The server starts on the wrong map or will not load Lost Island
- Check that the launch command uses exactly
LostIsland, including capitalization. - Confirm that you launched the ARK dedicated server installed from app ID
376030, not a different game executable or an old directory. - Run SteamCMD validation and review the startup log for missing or damaged files.
- Temporarily remove recent mods or INI edits, then add them back one change at a time.
The server runs but does not appear in the list
- Verify that the query port configured for the server is allowed by the host firewall.
- Verify that the router forwards that same port to the current local address of the server host.
- Check for another process using the port and confirm that the server is fully initialized.
- Use a direct external connection test to distinguish a browser-query problem from a game-connection problem.
Players see the server but cannot join
- Check the ARK game traffic rule separately from the query rule.
- Confirm that the external address and any translated port supplied to players match the router configuration.
- Make sure the client and server builds are compatible after an update.
- Confirm that the player owns the ARK: Survival Evolved base game required for the Lost Island DLC.
The server becomes unstable as activity grows
- Measure peak memory while several players are online rather than relying on idle usage.
- Compare the workload with the 5.5–7 GiB published Lost Island range and account for additional demand from players, save age, and mods.
- Remove or update the most recently added mod and test again.
- Move the service to a host with more available capacity if the operating system is swapping or the process is being terminated.
An INI change has no effect or prevents startup
- Restore the last known-good backup.
- Check that the setting is in the correct file: player-facing options in
GameUserSettings.ini, gameplay and spawn overrides inGame.ini. - Compare the key name, section, capitalization, and value syntax with the configuration reference.
- Reapply one change at a time and verify it in-game.
What players need to know
Give players the exact session name, whether a password is required, and the public address and port information that matches your configured forwarding rules. Tell them that Lost Island is DLC for ARK: Survival Evolved, so the base game entitlement is required. If you schedule updates or restarts, publish a predictable maintenance window and keep a current contact method for connection problems.
For administrators, the essential reproducibility details are the LostIsland level token, SteamCMD app ID 376030, launch parameters, both INI files, game and query port assignments, and the backup location. Keeping those details together turns a one-off setup into a server you can maintain and recover.
