1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThere are two different Android tasks people call “setting up a launcher.” You can customize the Home screens supplied by your current launcher, or install a different launcher and make it the phone’s default Home app. Start with the first option if you only need new icons, widgets, folders, favorites, or pages. Install and select another launcher only when you want a different Home interface.
Choose between customizing and replacing your launcher
A launcher is the app that supplies the Home screens and usually the app drawer. Changing what appears on those screens does not require replacing the launcher. Google’s Android Help says, “To quickly get to your favorite content, you can customize your Home screens.” On most phones, touch and hold an empty area of the Home screen, then tap Home settings. Google warns: “Important: Some of these steps may vary based on your device.” See Google’s Home-screen settings guide for the device-specific context.

| What you want | First action | Do you need a new launcher? |
|---|---|---|
| Change Home-screen arrangement, favorites, folders, or pages | Touch and hold an empty Home-screen area, then open Home settings | No |
| Add an app, shortcut, or widget | Use the current launcher’s app list or widget picker | No |
| Use a completely different Home interface | Install a launcher and set it as the default Home app | Yes |
| Change app-drawer behavior | Open the selected launcher’s own settings | Sometimes; controls vary by launcher and phone |
Do not confuse removing an icon with uninstalling an app. Removing an item from a Home screen leaves the app installed; an Uninstall command removes the app from the device.
What the default launcher controls
Android can have several apps capable of acting as the Home app, but only the selected default handles the Home button or Home gesture, Home-screen pages, and the drawer entry point. The exact names may be Home app, Home screen, or Default apps, depending on the manufacturer and Android version.

The app drawer is therefore not one universal Android screen with one universal set of controls. Its gesture, sorting choices, folders, search, and layout depend on the currently selected launcher and the phone’s software. A setting described for one launcher may not exist in another.
How to set a different launcher as the default
Use the launcher’s setup prompt first
- Install the launcher you have chosen from the phone’s app store.
- Open the new launcher.
- When Android asks which Home app to use, choose the new launcher and select Always if that choice is offered.
- Press the Home button or use the Home gesture to confirm that the new Home screen opens.
The prompt wording and timing are controlled by the phone and launcher. If the prompt does not appear, use the default-app settings instead of repeatedly reopening the launcher.
Use Default apps when no prompt appears
- Open Settings.
- Search Settings for Default apps, Home app, or Home screen.
- Open the matching default-app page.
- Choose the launcher you installed.
- Return to the Home screen and test the Home button or gesture.
Menu labels and nesting differ among manufacturers. A documented Microsoft Launcher example is Settings > Apps > Default apps > Home screen, then selecting Microsoft Launcher. Microsoft also documents opening its launcher and choosing Always when Android presents the choice. That route is an example for that launcher, not a promise that every phone uses the same labels; the full instructions are at Microsoft Support.

- Recheck the selected entry under Default apps; installing a launcher does not necessarily make it the default.
- Look specifically for Home app or Home screen if a general search for “launcher” returns nothing.
- Open the new launcher once before checking the setting; some launchers register themselves as a Home option only after first launch.
- Press Home after changing the selection. If the old interface still appears, the phone may have reverted the selection or may restrict the available Home apps.
These checks do not require changing developer options or device-management settings. Ordinary phone setup should stay within the Settings default-app controls.
Open and use Home settings
With the launcher you want active, touch and hold an empty area of a Home-screen page. Tap Home settings (or the equivalent option shown by that launcher). This is the starting point for launcher-specific choices such as the Home-screen layout, suggestions, notification indicators, or drawer behavior when those features are offered. The available list is not identical across phones.
If touching an empty area does nothing, first move or remove an icon from a crowded area so there is an empty space, or look for a gear icon in the launcher’s app list. Do not assume a setting exists merely because another Android phone shows it.
Add an app to a Home-screen page
- From the Home screen, swipe up from the bottom to open the app list if that is how your launcher exposes installed apps.
- Touch and hold the app icon.
- Keep holding while dragging the icon toward the left or right edge until the desired Home-screen page appears.
- Release it in an empty position.
Google documents this drag-from-the-app-list workflow in its guide to adding apps, shortcuts, and widgets. Some launchers instead show an Add to Home command after you hold an icon. Use whichever action the selected launcher presents.

Add an app shortcut
A shortcut is a specific action inside an app, rather than simply the app’s main icon. For example, an app may offer a shortcut to compose a message or open a particular section.
- Touch and hold the app icon in the app list or on the Home screen.
- When a shortcut menu appears, touch and hold the shortcut you want.
- Drag it to a Home-screen page and release it.
Only apps that provide shortcuts show them. If holding an icon displays no shortcut menu, the app may not support shortcuts or the launcher may not expose them.
Add and resize a widget
- Touch and hold an empty area of a Home-screen page.
- Tap Widgets.
- Find the app that supplies the widget.
- Touch and hold the widget preview.
- Drag it to the Home screen and release it where there is enough room.
For a widget that supports resizing, touch and hold it after placement. An outline with handles appears; drag the handles to change its width or height, then tap outside the widget. Widgets that do not display handles have a fixed size in that launcher. Google notes that some of the widget steps only work on Android 14 and up, so the absence of a particular picker or resize behavior may be a version limitation rather than a fault. The complete instructions are in Google Android Help.
Make folders and name them
- Touch and hold an app icon or shortcut.
- Drag it on top of another app or shortcut.
- Release when the second item is highlighted; the launcher creates a folder.
- Open the folder and use its name field or edit control to enter a label.
- Tap outside the folder to finish.
Folders group Home-screen items; they do not necessarily create folders in the app drawer. Whether the drawer supports its own folders or categories is a separate launcher feature.
Add, reorder, and remove Home-screen pages
Create another page
- Touch and hold an app, shortcut, widget, or folder.
- Drag it toward the right edge of the current page.
- Continue dragging until a blank page appears, then release the item.
Some launchers create the new page only when the item reaches the edge; move slowly enough for the page preview to appear.
Move items between pages
Touch and hold the item, drag it to the left or right edge, wait for the adjacent page, and release it in the new position. Repeat for each item you want to relocate.
Remove a page without uninstalling apps
Move every item off the page. Once the page is empty, the launcher removes that page. The apps remain installed, and any widgets or shortcuts can be placed on another page.

Understand the app drawer
There is no single Android-wide app-drawer gesture. Google’s general instructions describe swiping up from the bottom to reach apps when adding favorites, while Microsoft’s documentation describes swiping up from the dock to open Microsoft Launcher’s drawer. Those examples cannot be safely generalized to every phone.
Recommended Free Tools
Find your drawer
- Try the gesture shown by your launcher’s first-run tutorial.
- Look for an All apps button or an up-arrow icon on the Home screen.
- Touch and hold an empty Home-screen area and open Home settings; drawer-related options, if available, are usually listed there.
Organize what the drawer shows
Open the selected launcher’s settings and look for options labelled App drawer, All apps, Sort, Folders, or Search. The source instructions do not establish a universal method for changing drawer layout, sorting, folders, or gestures. If no such option appears, that launcher may not support it, or the phone’s software may control the drawer.
Home-screen folders and drawer organization are separate decisions. Placing two apps in a Home folder does not prove that the same grouping will appear in the drawer.
Compare launcher choices before committing
The useful comparison is not a universal ranking. First decide whether you need to replace the entire Home interface or only rearrange the existing one. If customization solves the problem, staying with the current launcher avoids another default-app selection. If you do install another launcher, compare how it asks to become the Home app, where it exposes Home settings, what drawer controls it provides, and whether it supports the Android version on your phone.
Check the launcher’s own setup screen and help material for those details. A launcher can offer a different prompt or settings path from the Microsoft example, and a phone manufacturer can rename the same control. Do not assume that a drawer feature, widget behavior, or shortcut menu shown in one launcher will be present in another. The practical test is whether the installed launcher appears under the phone’s Home-app choices and whether its Home button or gesture opens the expected interface.

To return to another installed launcher, open Settings, search for Default apps, Home app, or Home screen, and select the launcher you want. The Home screen that appears after pressing Home confirms which app is active. Switching the default does not, by itself, uninstall the other launcher.
If you remove a launcher app, first select a different installed Home app. A phone needs an available Home app to handle the Home button or gesture; the exact warning and recovery screen vary by device.

Common problems and fixes
“Home settings” is missing
You may be touching an occupied area, or the launcher may expose settings through its app list instead. Clear a small area and try again, then search Settings for the launcher’s name or Home app. Manufacturer software can rename or relocate this control.
The app will not stay on the Home screen
Drag it fully onto a page and release only when an open position is visible. If the launcher uses a locked layout, open Home settings and look for a layout-lock option. The label and availability of that option are launcher-specific.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A widget is not available
Not every app supplies a widget. Check the widget picker under the app’s name, make sure the app is installed for the current user, and consider the Android-version note: Google says some widget operations only work on Android 14 and up.
The drawer gesture does nothing
Try the launcher’s documented gesture or its All apps button. A gesture that opens a drawer in one launcher may perform another action in a different one. Confirm the selected default Home app before troubleshooting further.
The phone offers no launcher choice
Some managed or manufacturer-controlled devices restrict Home-app selection. On a normal personal phone, use the default-app setting; do not attempt developer APIs intended for device management.
Why developer documentation mentions CATEGORY_HOME
Android identifies Home apps with the CATEGORY_HOME intent category. Android Developers also documents DevicePolicyManager.addPersistentPreferredActivity() for administrators configuring dedicated, managed devices. That material explains how an app can be designated as Home in a controlled deployment; it is not a consumer procedure for changing a personal phone’s launcher. Personal devices should use the launcher prompt or Settings path above. See the dedicated-device documentation at Android Developers if you are administering a kiosk or other managed device.
A practical setup sequence
- Decide whether you need only Home-screen changes or a replacement Home interface.
- If customization is enough, open Home settings from an empty area and arrange pages, icons, folders, and widgets.
- If replacing the interface, install and open the chosen launcher.
- Accept its default-app prompt, or select it under Settings > Default apps (the exact path may differ).
- Press Home to verify the selection.
- Add the apps, shortcuts, widgets, folders, and pages you need.
- Open the launcher’s own settings to learn its drawer gesture and any available sorting or grouping controls.
- When a step behaves differently, record the phone model, Android version, and launcher name; those three details usually explain menu differences.
What you can conclude on any Android phone
The reliable division is simple: Home-screen content is edited from the current launcher, while a different Home interface is selected as a default app. Google’s empty-space gesture is the common starting point, but its device-variation warning matters. Microsoft’s default-app route demonstrates one concrete implementation, not a universal menu. App-drawer gestures and organization remain launcher- and device-specific, so use the controls exposed by the launcher that is actually selected.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I set a default launcher on Android?
Install and open the launcher, then choose it and tap Always if Android presents a Home-app prompt. If there is no prompt, open Settings and search for Default apps, Home app, or Home screen, then select the installed launcher. Menu names vary by manufacturer. Microsoft documents Settings > Apps > Default apps > Home screen for Microsoft Launcher as one example.
How do I change my Android Home screen without installing anything?
Touch and hold an empty area of the current Home screen and tap Home settings. From there, use the launcher’s tools to arrange pages and favorites. You can also add apps from the app list, add widgets from the widget picker, create folders by dragging one item onto another, and move or remove pages.
How do I add an app to my Home screen?
Swipe up from the bottom if your launcher uses that gesture to open its app list. Touch and hold the app, drag it to the desired Home-screen page, and release it in an open position. Some launchers show an Add to Home command instead.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I add a widget and resize it?
Touch and hold an empty Home-screen area, tap Widgets, find the app, then touch and hold its widget preview and place it. After placement, touch and hold the widget again. If resize handles appear around an outline, drag them to change its dimensions. Google notes that some widget steps work only on Android 14 and up.
How do I organize apps in the app drawer?
There is no universal Android method. The drawer belongs to the selected launcher, so open that launcher’s settings and look for App drawer, All apps, Sort, Folders, or Search. If those controls are absent, that launcher or phone may not offer them. Home-screen folders do not necessarily carry over to the drawer.
Why can’t I find the app drawer?
Try the gesture shown by the launcher’s tutorial, look for an All apps button or up-arrow, and verify which launcher is selected under Default apps. Google describes a bottom swipe in one workflow, while Microsoft describes swiping up from its dock; neither gesture is universal.
Does removing an icon uninstall the app?
No. Removing an icon or moving it off a Home-screen page changes the launcher layout but leaves the app installed. Choose Uninstall only when you intend to remove the app from the device.
Can I remove a Home-screen page?
Move every app, shortcut, widget, and folder off that page. When the page is empty, the launcher removes it. The items remain available to place on another page, and their apps are not uninstalled.
Why is a different launcher not listed in Settings?
Open the launcher once after installing it, then search Settings for Default apps, Home app, or Home screen. If it still does not appear, the phone may restrict Home-app selection, especially on a managed or manufacturer-controlled device.
The Bottom Line
Customize the current launcher for icons, widgets, folders, and pages. Install another launcher only when you want a different Home interface, then select it through the launcher prompt or your phone’s Default apps settings. Because drawer gestures and controls vary, always follow the options exposed by the launcher that is currently selected.
