To make prerecorded videos appear as a continuous YouTube Live broadcast, send them to YouTube through an encoder or a cloud streaming service that can play and repeat your files. Looping a video in the YouTube player only repeats playback for an individual viewer; it does not create a live broadcast. You can run the encoder on a computer, use a cloud service such as StreamNeo, or use dedicated hardware. The right option depends on whether you want to manage an always-on device yourself or keep the streaming work off your computer.
What you need before you start
YouTube Live needs a source that continuously sends video and audio. YouTube calls the software or device that converts and sends that content an encoder. Before configuring one, confirm your channel is eligible, choose a playback method, and prepare the files and stream settings.
- Live access: YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
- Prerecorded programming: Have the video files ready and confirm the chosen tool can play them unattended, repeat them, or schedule them as needed. Being able to encode a live camera or desktop input does not necessarily mean an encoder can schedule a library of files.
- Stable upload capacity: YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom beyond the total bitrate of the stream. If you send primary and backup streams simultaneously, budget for both plus that headroom. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- A plan for interruptions: Decide who will monitor the stream and how it will be restarted if the encoder, network, or YouTube connection fails.
Choose where the always-on stream will run
The main difference between the options is what has to keep operating. A local encoder depends on your computer, power, and internet connection; a hosted cloud service runs the playback away from home; dedicated hardware can play scheduled files without a general-purpose computer if the model supports that workflow.
- StreamNeo — cloud service: Upload prerecorded videos, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so your computer does not have to stay on. It is #1 for this use case because it runs continuously from the cloud, accepts uploads up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and includes a free first day.
- Software encoder on a computer: YouTube supports encoder-based streams and lists software options. This can suit an operator who has a dependable computer and wants direct control, but verify that the specific software supports unattended file playback and repeat scheduling. A computer-based stream depends on that computer’s power and network connection.
- Other cloud services: YouTube identifies Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. Check the service’s current plans, upload workflow, playlist and scheduling controls, security requirements, and interruption recovery before choosing it.
- Dedicated hardware: YouTube describes AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream as a way to schedule prerecorded media and stream it directly to YouTube Live without a computer. Verify the exact model’s current playback, scheduling, storage, network, and recovery capabilities before buying.
These approaches are not interchangeable: compare unattended playback, repeat behavior, monitoring, and recovery for the specific software or device you plan to use. YouTube’s encoder guide describes the cloud and hardware examples at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder; its HLS guide lists OBS as an encoder that supports HLS output, not as proof of a built-in 24/7 prerecorded scheduler.

Set up YouTube Live and connect an encoder
- Enable live streaming. Verify your channel and turn on live streaming in YouTube Studio. If this is your first activation, allow up to 24 hours before expecting access.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live. Create a stream or schedule one, then set its title, description, audience, and privacy. Use an appropriate privacy setting while testing.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. YouTube provides these in the Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. If it is compromised, a channel owner or manager can reset it. See Manage live stream settings.
- Configure your playback source. In your encoder, select YouTube as the destination or enter the server URL and stream key. For encrypted ingest, choose YouTube’s RTMPS preset or use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL; see Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Set the video and audio output. Match the encoder’s output to YouTube’s supported settings and the source files. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio; use constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60 frames per second, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Choose a bitrate for your resolution from YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide. Avoid choosing a higher output resolution or bitrate than your source and connection can sustain.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Confirm that YouTube receives the signal, then check the video, audio, metadata, and privacy before starting the live broadcast. For scheduled events, YouTube recommends configuring the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event; see YouTube live streaming tips.
Choose RTMP/RTMPS or HLS
RTMP or RTMPS
Use the RTMP/RTMPS workflow when your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. The general encoder guidance specifies supported video and audio codecs, constant bitrate, a two-second recommended keyframe interval, and the bitrate guidance by resolution. RTMPS protects the connection to YouTube; it does not replace keeping the stream key secret.
HLS
HLS has distinct encoder requirements and higher latency than RTMP. YouTube’s HLS setup guide specifies 1–4 second segment duration, TS segment format, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. Use HLS only if the chosen encoder supports those settings. See Set up an HLS stream.

Test and operate the stream
Test with a sample that resembles the real program: similar motion, audio levels, resolution, and bitrate. A static image or silent clip may not reveal dropped frames, audio problems, or bandwidth limits that occur with the actual playlist.
- Check that the correct stream is selected and the preview shows the intended video and sound.
- Confirm the upload connection has YouTube’s recommended 20% bitrate headroom. If primary and backup feeds are active together, calculate the total for both.
- Watch stream health after going live, and monitor audio and video quality during operation.
- If using a local encoder, keep an eye on the computer, power, network, and local recording or archive storage. YouTube’s tips specifically recommend checking local archive growth.
- Write down the restart procedure, including how to restart the encoder and confirm that the correct scheduled stream is receiving it. Do not assume a platform or encoder will recover automatically unless that specific product documents the behavior.
Plan for long broadcasts, archives, and restarts
A 24/7 stream raises a separate question from whether the video keeps playing: what happens to the live event and its archive over time? YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable; an indefinite broadcast should not be treated as one guaranteed, fully rewindable archive. See Turn on DVR on live streams and the encoder guide.

Decide whether your operating plan uses shorter scheduled events, a deliberate stop and restart, or another workflow supported by your chosen encoder and YouTube settings. YouTube provides auto-start and auto-stop controls in stream settings, but those controls do not guarantee an indefinitely continuous broadcast or a single archive. Verify the intended behavior in a test stream before relying on it.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Only stream videos and audio you have the rights to broadcast on YouTube. A file being prerecorded, publicly available, or included in a playlist does not by itself establish that you have permission to rebroadcast it. Check licenses for music, footage, images, and other included material, and review YouTube’s current rules before scheduling a long-running channel. A stream can be interrupted or restricted if its content or channel violates applicable requirements.

Common problems and fixes
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show an incoming signal | The stream key or server URL is wrong, the encoder is stopped, or the channel is not yet enabled for live streaming. | Confirm live access, copy the current server URL and key from Live Control Room, and verify the encoder is sending to the intended scheduled stream. |
| The preview is unstable or drops frames | Upload capacity is insufficient or fluctuating, or the selected bitrate is too high for the connection. | Check available upload bandwidth against the total bitrate and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Test at the intended resolution and bitrate. |
| Video appears but audio is missing or poor | The file may have no usable audio, the encoder may be using an incompatible audio codec, or the wrong source may be selected. | Check the source file and encoder’s audio input and use a YouTube-supported AAC or MP3 output for RTMP/RTMPS. |
| The video plays once and stops | The chosen tool may not repeat files or schedule a playlist for unattended playback. | Check the tool’s documented playlist and repeat controls; encoding a live input alone does not prove it can loop prerecorded media. |
| The broadcast stops when the computer is switched off | The playback encoder is running locally. | Keep the computer powered and connected, use dedicated hardware with the required prerecorded scheduling feature, or move playback to a cloud service. |
| A long stream has limited rewind or no single expected archive | YouTube’s archive and DVR behavior differs for streams longer than 12 hours. | Plan a stop/restart or scheduled-event workflow and test the archive result rather than assuming an indefinite stream produces one complete rewindable recording. |
| An unknown source begins streaming to the channel | The stream key may have been exposed. | Reset the key in YouTube Studio and update the authorized encoder with the new key. |
