How to Restart a Failed FFmpeg YouTube Stream Automatically on Raspberry Pi

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use an external process supervisor to start FFmpeg again after it exits; FFmpeg’s reconnect options handle only certain network interruptions for supported inputs and do not restart a dead process. On a Raspberry Pi, systemd is a practical supervisor, but its exact unit settings depend on your installed Raspberry Pi OS and systemd version. First identify whether FFmpeg exited, is still running without delivering video, or is reporting an input or network error—then choose the recovery method that fits.

Identify what failed before setting up a restart

A restart is useful when the FFmpeg process has stopped. It cannot by itself repair a bad stream key, missing input, invalid encoder settings, or a persistent network outage. Check the process and its recent output, then confirm the stream’s condition in YouTube Live Control Room.

  • FFmpeg exited: use a process supervisor so it can launch FFmpeg again.
  • FFmpeg is running but the source temporarily disconnected: protocol-specific input reconnect options may help if the source uses HTTP and the particular error is covered by those options.
  • FFmpeg is running but YouTube shows a problem: inspect encoder output, stream health, CPU load, the stream key, and outbound connectivity before increasing retries.

A new FFmpeg process does not prove that YouTube resumed the same broadcast or kept the same watch URL. Verify the event in Live Control Room after recovery.

What FFmpeg reconnect options do—and do not do

FFmpeg documents reconnect controls in its protocol documentation, in the HTTP protocol section. They apply to HTTP input behavior; they are not universal RTMP/RTMPS output flags and are not a substitute for process supervision.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • reconnect retries a disconnection before end-of-file.
  • reconnect_at_eof treats end-of-file as an error and can be useful for live or endless streams.
  • reconnect_on_network_error covers TCP or TLS errors during connection.
  • reconnect_on_http_error accepts HTTP status codes or classes such as 4xx or 5xx.
  • reconnect_streamed enables reconnect behavior for streamed, non-seekable inputs.

The HTTP protocol options also describe retry and delay bounds. Configure bounds with the expected failure in mind: an endless retry loop can hide a persistent source problem, while a finite retry window may allow a process to exit for the supervisor to handle. Check the installed FFmpeg version’s documentation and actual input protocol before adding options. These settings do not restart FFmpeg after the process exits.

Use systemd to restart FFmpeg after it exits

Systemd can supervise a long-running FFmpeg command on Raspberry Pi OS. A Raspberry Pi-targeted FFmpeg service project documents this general approach for Debian/Raspberry Pi OS, but it is an implementation example, not a universal unit file. The available information does not establish a verified set of directives for every OS release, so do not copy a generic unit without checking the systemd documentation installed on your Pi.

  1. Make the FFmpeg command work manually first. Confirm the input, encoder options, and YouTube RTMP or RTMPS destination. Keep the stream key out of public scripts, screenshots, shell history, and logs.
  2. Create a service using the syntax supported by your installed systemd. Give it the correct execution user, working directory, command, and restart policy. Choose a restart delay and policy deliberately; repeated immediate failures can create a restart loop without fixing the cause.
  3. Restrict access to credentials. Store the stream key in a file or service configuration with permissions appropriate to the account that runs FFmpeg. Avoid putting secrets in a command that may be exposed in process listings or diagnostics.
  4. Enable and start the service using the installed systemd procedure. Check its status and logs after starting; exact commands and unit behavior should be confirmed against the systemd version on your Pi.
  5. Test a real failure safely. Stop the FFmpeg process or interrupt the test input, then verify that the supervisor starts it again. Watch the FFmpeg output and YouTube Live Control Room to establish whether the encoder and broadcast both recovered.

Systemd can act only on the process state it supervises. A process that remains alive but is stuck or sending unusable data may not trigger a restart unless you separately monitor stream health. Do not assume that a successful process restart means YouTube has resumed ingesting the intended event.

Check YouTube compatibility and Pi capacity

YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends RTMPS for encryption and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Raspberry Pi can encode a chosen format or resolution.

Match the encoder’s resolution and codec to YouTube’s current bitrate table and to the Pi’s actual outbound capacity. For YouTube’s H.264 720p30 row, the 2026 guidance lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended ingest bitrate; confirm the current table because recommendations can change. A stable connection needs sufficient upload capacity for the selected bitrate, with room for normal variation.

Before relying on automatic recovery, test with representative movement and audio. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.” Monitor stream health and reported messages during the test.

Troubleshoot repeated failures

If FFmpeg keeps restarting, treat the restart as a symptom rather than proof that recovery is working. YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder and stream, reviewing errors and CPU load, and testing the outbound connection when the encoder appears healthy.

  • FFmpeg exits immediately: inspect its error output for a bad input path, unsupported option, invalid encoder configuration, or destination error. Test the command manually before relying on the supervisor.
  • YouTube reports an encoder start error: check the stream key in Live Control Room. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance advises obtaining a new stream key there and updating the encoder when appropriate.
  • The source is unavailable: confirm that the camera, file, or other input exists and can be read. A supervisor cannot restore a missing or broken source.
  • The Pi is overloaded: inspect CPU load and encoder errors. Reduce the encoding workload or select settings that the device and current YouTube guidance support.
  • The encoder looks healthy but ingest fails: test the Pi’s outbound internet connection and verify the destination, protocol, and stream key.
  • FFmpeg stays alive but the stream is unhealthy: inspect FFmpeg logs and YouTube stream health. A process restart policy that triggers only after exit will not detect every delivery failure.
  • FFmpeg restarts but the live event does not recover as expected: check Live Control Room directly. Process recovery alone does not establish YouTube’s broadcast state or whether the same watch URL remains active.

Or let it run in the cloud
