Set up an AI toy yourself before handing it to a child: identify its sensors and data practices, secure its account and network, complete onboarding as the caregiver, and test the privacy and stop controls. There is no universal setup sequence—follow the current manual and privacy notice for the exact model, because a voice-enabled plush and a camera-equipped robot may collect and handle very different information.
Before setup, find out what the toy can collect
A connected toy is also a data-processing device. The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) describes connected toys as physical products supported by internet functionality that may process personal data. Before powering yours on, check the manual, privacy notice, app listing, manufacturer support page, and any safety or recall notices.

Look for a microphone, camera, motion or location sensors, internet connection, child profiles, accounts, subscriptions, voice interaction, or open-ended chat. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends asking what a device records, how information is stored and shared, and whether parents can manage or delete it. In practical terms, find out:

- Whether it stores audio, video, transcripts, images, location, or profile details—and for how long.
- Who receives the information, including app providers and third-party software components.
- Whether information is used to personalize the service or train other systems.
- How a caregiver can review, download, or delete a child’s information.
- What features stop working if you disable a sensor, disconnect the toy, or stop using its app.
The ICO says privacy information should be available before purchase and setup, and that product packaging or instructions should make clear when a product connects and processes personal data. It also calls for clarity about the roles of parties handling transmitted information. Its connected-product guidance notes it is under review following the UK Data (Use and Access) Act; consult the current version for up-to-date legal detail.

Set up the caregiver account and network
- Use an adult-controlled account. Create the caregiver account with your own details, choose a unique password, and enable additional account security if offered.
- Secure the Wi-Fi. Use a password-protected home network and do not share its password with the child. The ICO calls for appropriate security, including encryption in transit, and warns of risks such as unauthorized account access, microphone takeover, and location tracking.
- Install the official companion app. Get it from the official app store or the manufacturer’s source. Review requested permissions before granting them, and allow only those needed for features your family intends to use.
Do not assume the toy maker is the only possible data recipient. In a 2025 Apitor robot-toy case, the FTC alleged that an app’s third-party software development kit enabled collection of children’s precise location without required parental notice and consent. That allegation concerns a particular app and case; it does not establish that every connected toy collects location.
Complete onboarding as the caregiver
Read each consent and permission screen rather than tapping through. Keep the caregiver account under adult control, enter only the child-profile details the service requires, and decline optional location, sharing, or marketing features unless you have a clear reason to enable them. A single consent checkbox does not answer every privacy question; review the policy, retention period, sharing practices, and deletion controls too.

In the United States, COPPA obligations can apply when an online service is directed to children under 13 and collects their personal information. The details depend on the service and circumstances, so consult current FTC guidance rather than treating app onboarding as a complete legal assessment.

Miko’s guide provides one model-specific example, not a universal checklist. It says to charge the robot for at least 30–60 minutes before setup, using the included USB-C cable; for best results, it recommends a 15 W (5 V, 3 A) or higher power adapter. The guide says the robot can remain connected to power during setup. Check the current guide and box contents before purchasing any extra adapter.

Find and test the privacy and stop controls
Before the child uses the toy, locate its controls for listening or microphone access, camera, AI conversation, location, messaging or video calls, chat history, retention, and deletion. Test how to pause listening and how to disconnect the toy from the internet. If there is a physical mute switch or a clear listening indicator, learn what it looks and sounds like.

The ICO recommends a visible indication when personal data is being collected, a clear signal when listening mode is active, avoiding collection in passive listening mode, and an easy way to turn off the connection. Show the child the listening or recording indicator and agree on when the toy should be switched off—for example, during private conversations or at bedtime. If the toy offers child profiles or age settings, verify that the profile and defaults fit the child who will use it.
Set boundaries for AI conversations
Explain in age-appropriate language that the toy is software, not a person. Tell the child not to share private information and to bring you anything confusing, upsetting, or unexpected. Supervise early use, particularly if the toy supports open-ended chat, a camera, messaging, or video calling. Review available topic filters, content controls, and time limits.

Moderation claims do not prove that every generated response will be suitable. In September 2025, the FTC asked seven chatbot companies how they test and monitor possible negative effects on children, mitigate harm, limit use, disclose features and data practices, and handle conversation information. That was an information-gathering inquiry—not a finding that all conversational AI is either safe or unsafe. Pause use and review the settings if a response concerns you.
Review settings after updates and over time
After a firmware or app update, check permissions and privacy settings again. Periodically review account access, data-review and deletion options, and any policy or feature changes. The ICO recommends checking regularly that security measures remain in place and work as intended.
What the Miko example does—and does not—establish
Miko describes Miko 3 as an AI robot for children aged 5–10, with parent-app controls and age-appropriate moderated conversations. Those are the manufacturer’s product claims, not independent confirmation of safety. Its privacy policy, last updated 30 March 2026, says it applies to Miko 3 and Miko Mini; describes collecting and recognizing children’s face and voice data, demographic information, and preferences; and says the company obtains verifiable parental consent before collecting information from or about children under 13. The policy also says parents can delete a child’s information through the mobile app and that biometric data may be stored for up to three years after last use. Review the current Miko privacy policy and app settings directly; features and policy language can change.
What current rules and cases mean for families
The FTC’s 2025 Apitor announcement describes allegations involving an app for robot toys aimed at ages 6–14 and a third-party developer’s collection of precise location data. The FTC said proposed order terms would require parental notice and verifiable consent for covered collection, deletion on a parent’s request, and retention only as reasonably necessary. These are case-specific allegations and proposed settlement terms, not a finding about all smart toys.
In the UK, the Department for Business and Trade and the Office for Product Safety and Standards announced a call for evidence on toy safety, including AI-enabled toys, on 6 July 2026. The announcement said it would remain open until 6 October 2026. This is a policy evidence-gathering step, not a new rule by itself; check for subsequent results and current guidance.
