The schedule and screenshot capture are separate parts of the system; a failed capture is an error to report, not evidence that the page changed.
How the hourly change detector works
Build the workflow as five separate steps: trigger a run, capture the rendered page in a repeatable state, save the image and metadata, compare it with a prior image, and send an alert if the comparison crosses your chosen threshold. An AI agent can summarize or triage a detected difference, but it does not need to make every capture or comparison decision.

- Schedule: Configure your hosting environment to start the job hourly. Check that platform’s current scheduler documentation for supported intervals, timezone behavior, and execution guarantees; those details vary by platform.
- Capture: Load the page in a browser and wait for the state you want to monitor. A screenshot API can handle a direct capture; use a programmable browser when the page requires logins, clicks, or other scripted state.
- Store: Save the original image with its URL, capture time, viewport dimensions, capture mode, and success or failure status.
- Compare: Compare successful captures that have the same dimensions. Save the diff image and the comparison result.
- Alert: Send an alert with the time, URL, prior and current images, and diff when the configured rule is met. Keep capture failures distinct from visual changes.
Choose a capture method
Direct screenshot for a public page
For a straightforward URL capture, a hosted browser screenshot endpoint avoids maintaining a browser installation yourself. Cloudflare Browser Run documents a Quick Action screenshot endpoint that processes page JavaScript before capture. Its documentation describes the endpoint as rendering the webpage by processing its HTML and JavaScript, then capturing the fully rendered page.

Programmable browser for pages with interactions
If monitoring requires a login, a click, or custom browser state, use a scripted browser session rather than treating a one-request screenshot as a complete automation. Cloudflare documents browser sessions for more involved automation. Alternatively, use a self-managed or hosted Playwright or Puppeteer workflow with explicit steps for authentication, navigation, and waiting.

Make captures comparable
A visual diff is meaningful only when the two images represent the same capture conditions. Set and retain these choices as part of the job configuration:
- Viewport: Keep width and height fixed. Responsive layouts can change substantially with viewport size.
- Scope: Choose viewport, full page, or a selected element. Monitor the smallest area that answers the question; a full-page capture can include more changing content.
- Browser state: Keep cookies, consent state, authentication, locale, and other relevant settings consistent.
- Wait condition: Wait for a known selector, a stable page state, or a deliberate delay. A screenshot taken before client-side rendering finishes can look like a change every run.
- Dynamic content: If ads, timestamps, rotating banners, or live feeds change routinely, monitor a stable region or exclude known volatile areas from the comparison.
Cloudflare’s screenshot documentation describes viewport, full-page, selector, and navigation-wait options. A snapshot endpoint can return HTML and a screenshot together, which may help explain a visual difference with page content.
Compare images and define an alert rule
Pixelmatch compares image data of equal dimensions, reports a differing-pixel count, and can produce a diff image. Its threshold and windowed comparison options let you tune sensitivity, but there is no universal cutoff that works for every site.

- Reject or separately handle images with different dimensions; do not interpret them as a normal visual comparison.
- Run the comparison against a baseline and record the differing-pixel count or other comparison result.
- Set a per-pixel threshold to reduce sensitivity to small color variation, then calibrate the aggregate alert rule against representative captures from the page.
- Consider a windowed rule when local clusters matter more than scattered individual pixel differences.
- Inspect representative diff images and adjust the rule before relying on alerts.
Compare with the immediately previous successful run if the goal is to find any change since the prior hour. Compare with a reviewed, approved baseline if changes should remain visible until a person accepts them. These are different policies: automatically replacing the baseline after every run can normalize an important change before anyone reviews it.
Keep errors separate from changes
Record capture status before comparing images. A timeout, failed navigation, bot check, blank result, or changed image dimensions should produce an operational error status—not a confirmed visual-change alert. This distinction prevents a broken capture from being mistaken for a changed page.
For every run, retain at least the capture time, target URL, dimensions, capture mode, success or failure state, comparison result, and links to the stored image and diff. Make alerts include enough context for a person to distinguish a real page change from a rendering or capture problem.

The screenshot is blank or looks unfinished
Check whether the page needs more time for JavaScript rendering or a particular selector to appear. Set an appropriate wait condition and save the capture status so an incomplete load is not treated as a change.
The diff fires on every run
Confirm that viewport, capture scope, browser state, and waiting rule are unchanged. Then inspect the diff for timestamps, rotating content, ads, or other moving regions. Exclude irrelevant areas or tune the comparison threshold and alert rule against actual examples.

The image comparison fails
Check that both images were captured successfully and have equal dimensions. If the viewport or capture scope changed, restore the configured values or establish a new approved baseline deliberately.
An alert reports a page change after a capture error
Separate the navigation and capture result from the comparison stage. Only compare successful images; issue a distinct operational alert for timeouts, failed loads, or other capture errors.
The baseline keeps moving forward
Review the baseline policy. If a person must approve changes, compare against a separately stored approved image rather than replacing it with the latest successful capture automatically.

Performance and cost considerations
Hourly execution means 24 scheduled runs per day for each monitored page, if the scheduler runs each hour as configured. The actual execution reliability, runtime limits, capture quotas, pricing, storage retention, and alert integrations depend on the scheduler and capture service you choose; verify their current terms and documentation before deployment. Limit full-page capture to cases where content below the fold matters, and store only the images and metadata needed for review and retention.
