To use Alexa with a smart TV, first check whether it is a Fire TV. A compatible Fire TV remote lets you press its Alexa voice button and speak; you can also link a compatible Alexa device in the Alexa app, or use hands-free Alexa on supported hardware. These are different setup routes, and features vary by model, software, language, and country.
First, identify which kind of TV setup you have
The detailed setup steps below apply to Amazon Fire TV Smart TVs and Fire TV streaming devices. They should not be assumed to work on every television that has “smart” features or supports some form of voice control. If your set is not a Fire TV, check the instructions for its exact manufacturer and model; this guide does not establish setup steps for other TV platforms.

- Fire TV Smart TV: Fire TV is built into the television. You can use a compatible voice remote, link an Alexa-enabled device, or use hands-free Alexa if the model supports it.
- Fire TV streaming device: The streaming device supplies the Fire TV interface. A compatible voice remote or linked Alexa device can control it; supported hardware may also offer hands-free interaction.
- Other smart TV: Do not follow Fire TV menus or assume Alexa is built in. Use the TV maker’s current support instructions for that model.

- Sign in with an Amazon account or register the TV when prompted.
Once setup is complete, press and hold the Alexa voice button on a compatible remote, speak a request, then release the button. Amazon’s examples include opening an app, searching for a movie or genre, and controlling playback. Some requests open a separate display; use Back or Home to return to the previous screen. See Amazon’s Fire TV Smart TV setup instructions and Alexa voice-control guidance.
Link an Alexa-enabled device to Fire TV
Linking an Alexa device, such as a compatible Echo, is optional: it is not required to use a Fire TV voice remote. Amazon requires the Fire TV and Alexa device to be registered to the same Amazon account. Update the Alexa app before starting.

Amazon says multiple Alexa devices can be linked to one Fire TV, but not all features work on Echo Show devices or with a paired Fire TV Cube. Linked control can support content searches and playback actions; available commands depend on the current Fire TV software, Alexa app, device, language, and country. Consult Amazon’s Fire TV linking instructions and Fire TV voice-control guidance.

Choose between remote, linked-device, and hands-free control
| Control method | How you speak | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible voice remote | Press and hold the Alexa voice button while speaking. | The remote must support voice control and be paired with the Fire TV. |
| Linked Alexa-enabled device | Speak to the linked device after completing the Alexa app setup. | Both devices must use the same Amazon account; commands and features vary. |
| Hands-free Alexa | Speak without pressing a remote button. | Only supported Fire TV hardware offers it. Keep its microphones enabled and unobstructed. |
Amazon identifies Fire TV Cube as supporting far-field voice interaction; its developer guidance distinguishes this from near-field interaction through the microphone button on an Alexa Voice Remote. A remote remains a separate push-to-talk option. See Amazon’s Fire TV voice-interaction documentation.

Understand standby behavior and microphone privacy
Fire TV Smart TVs generally do not respond to Alexa voice commands when powered off or in standby. On Fire TV Omni TVs, the model-specific Alexa Anytime feature can allow commands while the screen is off or the TV is in standby. Amazon warns that enabling this behavior may increase power consumption in its Alexa Home Theater guidance.
On Fire TV Omni televisions, the physical microphone switch disconnects microphone power and illuminates red when muted. With that switch off, the built-in microphones cannot record and stream audio to the cloud; remote voice requests remain available. This distinction matters if you want voice control from the remote but not through the TV’s far-field microphones. See Amazon’s Alexa and Fire TV guidance.

- Only compatible with Fire TV Omni Mini-LED Series, Fire TV Omni QLED Series, Fire TV Omni Series, Fire TV 4-Series, and Fire TV 2-Series smart TVs, plus Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen), and Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen)

Alexa Home Theater is optional audio—not a requirement for Alexa
Alexa Home Theater sends TV audio through compatible Echo speakers on supported Fire TV setups. It is separate from voice control: you do not need to configure it to ask Alexa to find content or control playback.
For a Fire TV Smart TV
Check Settings > Display & Sounds for an Alexa Home Theater option; Amazon says it is not available on every model. Its documented setup requires Wi-Fi even if the TV also uses Ethernet. The selected speaker group should be in the same room and on the same Wi-Fi network. Amazon’s guide describes selecting up to two compatible Echo devices, with an optional Echo Sub. Check the current Alexa Home Theater instructions for compatible combinations.

For a Fire TV streaming device connected over HDMI ARC
This setup requires a supported Fire TV device, compatible Echo devices, and a television with an HDMI ARC port. Connect the Fire TV to the TV port labeled ARC, enable ARC in the television settings, and enable HDMI CEC if needed. Check the TV’s audio output settings as well: Amazon notes that menu choices can be labeled PCM or Stereo, or Bypass, Passthrough, or Auto for Echo Studio, depending on the TV brand. This configuration routes audio through the Echo devices rather than a connected soundbar or receiver. Confirm device compatibility and follow Amazon’s HDMI ARC Home Theater instructions before changing your audio setup.
CEC menu names differ by manufacturer: Samsung uses Anynet+, LG uses SIMPLINK, and Sony uses BRAVIA Sync. Names and menu paths vary with model and software, so use the TV manual or manufacturer support page if the setting is elsewhere. CEC support alone does not mean Alexa is built into the TV. See Amazon’s HDMI CEC guidance.
Quick Recap
Fix common Alexa setup problems
- The Alexa device will not link: Confirm the Fire TV and Alexa device use the same Amazon account, update the Alexa app, then retry through More > Settings > TV & Video > Fire TV > Link Your Alexa Device.
- A command is unavailable: Check for Fire TV software and Alexa app updates. Some commands are limited by device, language, or country, so a command that works on one setup may not work on another.
- Hands-free Alexa does not hear you: Confirm the Fire TV supports hands-free interaction, make sure its microphones are enabled and unobstructed, and try the remote’s voice button as a separate push-to-talk method.
- The TV does not respond in standby: That is generally expected for Fire TV Smart TVs. Alexa Anytime is the model-specific option on supported Fire TV Omni TVs.
- Alexa Home Theater is missing: Amazon does not offer that option on every Fire TV Smart TV. For an HDMI ARC setup, verify that the devices are supported, the Fire TV is connected to the ARC-labeled port, and ARC, CEC, and audio output settings are configured as required.
