To set up Alexa on a compatible Amazon Fire tablet, use the main profile, open Settings > Alexa, and turn on Alexa and Hands-Free Mode. Then choose whether to use voice access, Show Mode, or manual access—and review Alexa recording controls and the tablet’s separate data and advertising settings.
Check your tablet and profile first
“Alexa tablet” usually means a Fire tablet with Alexa features; it does not mean every Amazon tablet supports every Alexa function. Amazon says Alexa features require the main profile. Secondary profiles, including child profiles, cannot use them.

Turn on Alexa and choose how to access it
Enable hands-free Alexa
- On the tablet’s main profile, open Settings > Alexa.
- Turn on Alexa and Hands-Free Mode.
- Test the wake word. Hands-free availability varies by tablet: some models are ready only while the screen is on, while connected to power, or in Show Mode.
On a passcode-locked tablet, some Alexa features may be available without unlocking, while others require the passcode. Amazon documents Settings > Alexa > Trusted Networks as a way to reduce passcode prompts on a trusted Wi-Fi network; a passcode may still be needed to exit Show Mode.
Start or leave Show Mode
On a supported tablet, swipe down from the home screen to open Quick Actions and toggle Show Mode, or say “Alexa, switch to Show Mode.” To leave, toggle it off in Quick Actions or say “Alexa, exit Show Mode.” Show Mode is a full-screen Alexa experience. Amazon says the display may wake after detecting the wake word or motion in view of the camera, as well as after screen or button interaction, so consider that behavior before using it in a shared room.

Use Alexa without hands-free wake-word access
For manual access, turn off Hands-Free Mode under Settings > Alexa, use the Alexa control in Quick Actions, or hold both volume buttons for three seconds. A red bar or icon in Show Mode, or a status icon outside Show Mode, indicates hands-free is off. Outside Show Mode, you can still invoke Alexa by holding the Home button.
| Access choice | How it works | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Hands-free Alexa | Speak the wake word when the feature is available. | Availability depends on tablet and conditions such as screen state, power, or Show Mode. |
| Manual Alexa | Use Quick Actions or hold Home outside Show Mode. | It avoids wake-word access but still lets you invoke Alexa manually. |
| Show Mode | Use a full-screen Alexa interface, started with Quick Actions or a supported voice command. | Limited to specified older models and software versions; the screen may wake in response to motion. |
Understand what Alexa sends and manage recordings
Amazon says the Fire tablet detects the wake word with on-device keyword spotting. After detection, it streams audio to Amazon’s cloud for processing, including a fraction of a second of audio from before the wake word. This is different from saying that all room audio is continuously streamed. The tablet shows a blue line while audio is streaming; Amazon also describes a short tone at the start and end of the stream. Amazon says Fire tablet Alexa interactions are encrypted in transit.
To review or delete Alexa interactions, use the Alexa app’s More > Alexa Privacy controls, or Amazon’s Alexa privacy settings. Amazon says account-associated recordings, text transcripts, and typed requests can be reviewed and deleted there. App labels may change. Amazon also says you can ask Alexa to delete the last utterance or everything said that day.

Deleting recordings may limit personalization or stop some features from working. For example, Amazon says Voice ID will not work if recordings are not saved. Turning off Hands-Free Mode prevents wake-word access, but it does not itself delete stored recordings.

Fire tablet privacy settings control different kinds of data; switching one off is not a universal opt-out. Amazon says these settings are configurable by profile and device, so review them on each tablet and applicable profile.

Amazon also says privacy settings for certain devices may be managed from the account’s Manage Your Content and Devices > Privacy Settings > Amazon Devices Privacy area. The exact controls available can depend on the device and profile.
