To set up AirPods Pro 3, open the case with both earbuds inside next to an iPhone running iOS 26 or later, tap Connect, follow the prompts and tap Done. Then check the ear-tip seal, learn the stem controls and enable only the features that suit your devices, location and needs. Some tools—notably Live Translation and hearing features—have additional compatibility and availability requirements.
Pair AirPods Pro 3 with an iPhone
- Update the iPhone to iOS 26 or later.
- With both earbuds in the case, open the lid and hold the case beside the iPhone.
- When the setup animation appears, tap Connect, follow the onscreen steps and tap Done.
If the animation does not appear, leave the earbuds in the open case and double-tap the front of the case until its status light flashes white. On the iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth and select AirPods Pro 3. Apple says that when the owner is signed in to iCloud, setup also makes the earbuds available on supported devices signed in to the same Apple Account. AirPods can be associated with one Apple Account for features such as automatic device switching and Find My; a previous owner must remove them from their account before another person can use those features.

Find a comfortable, secure ear-tip fit
AirPods Pro 3 includes silicone tips in five sizes: XXS, XS, S, M and L. Try different sizes in both ears; the best fit should feel comfortable and form a seal rather than loosen when you move.
- Connect the AirPods to your iPhone or iPad and open the AirPods settings.
- Run Ear Tip Fit Test or Test Acoustic Seal, if available, and follow the prompts.
- If the result suggests a poor seal or one ear feels different, try another tip size and test again.
A proper fit is required for Hearing Protection to work as intended. The case supports MagSafe, Apple Watch, Qi-certified and USB-C charging; Apple lists a USB-C charge cable as sold separately. The earbuds and case are rated IP57 for dust, sweat and water resistance, but Apple says resistance can decline with normal wear and the product should not be charged when wet.

Learn the stem controls and choose a listening mode
Press the stem once to play or pause audio, twice to skip forward, and three times to go back. A light swipe up or down on the stem adjusts volume; a press answers a call. Press and hold can be configured to switch listening modes. Holding both stems at once is also a shortcut to start Live Translation.

Other listed audio features include Conversation Awareness, Personalised Volume, Loud Sound Reduction and Personalised Spatial Audio with head tracking. Their behavior can depend on the setting and environment. Apple notes that debris or earwax buildup can affect noise-control performance and recommends regular cleaning.

Set up Live Translation
Live Translation has requirements beyond the earbuds: AirPods Pro 3 with current firmware, an iPhone 15 Pro or later running iOS 26 or later, Apple Intelligence enabled, and Apple’s Translate app. Availability varies by region and language.

- In the Translate app, download the other speaker’s language and the language you want to hear. Apple says that after download, processing happens on the iPhone.
- Open Translate, choose Live, select both languages and start the session. You can also start it by holding both AirPods stems.
- Listen to the translation in the earbuds and follow it on the iPhone screen. You can speak and show or play a translated response from the phone.
Apple warns that Live Translation uses generative models and its output may be inaccurate, unexpected or offensive. Treat it as assistance, not an authoritative interpreter for consequential medical, legal or safety decisions; verify important information.

Understand the hearing features and their limits
Hearing Test and Hearing Aid
On a compatible iPhone or iPad, AirPods Pro 3 can take a Hearing Test or use an existing audiogram, then apply hearing adjustments through Hearing Aid. Apple describes Hearing Aid as intended for adults with perceived mild to moderate hearing loss. Its Hearing Test takes about five minutes in a quiet room. These features are subject to regulatory authorization and are unavailable in some countries and regions; they do not replace professional care when you have concerns about your hearing.
Hearing Protection
Hearing Protection can be configured in AirPods settings on iPhone or iPad and on supported Macs. Use it only with a proper fit. Apple says it is not suitable for extremely loud impulse sounds such as gunfire, fireworks or jackhammers, sustained sound above 110 dBA, or some workplaces. Ask your employer before relying on it for workplace protection.

In regions following EN 352, AirPods Pro 3 can set up EN 352 Protection. Apple says this setting limits media’s maximum sound level to 82 dBA and meets applicable EN 352 requirements. Availability is regional, and Apple lists situations in which protection is off, including when the earbuds have no battery charge or are in Off listening mode.
Use heart-rate sensing during compatible workouts
AirPods Pro 3 has a heart-rate sensor for workouts. Apple specifies its built-in monitoring for workouts using the Fitness app and compatible third-party iPhone apps on iOS 26 or later. It is not a promise of heart-rate tracking in every app or activity.
What to expect from battery life and charging
Apple lists up to 8 hours of listening on one charge with Active Noise Cancellation enabled, or up to 7.5 hours with Spatial Audio and head tracking enabled. It lists up to 24 hours with the MagSafe Charging Case and ANC enabled, and says five minutes of charging provides around one hour of listening. These are Apple’s maxima, not guaranteed everyday runtimes: its cited battery testing used pre-production AirPods Pro 3 and iPhone 17 Pro units with pre-release software in July and August 2025. Apple says actual battery life varies with settings, environment and use.
