How to Set Up a YouTube Survival Game Stream

Connect your survival game encoder to YouTube, protect your stream key, check upload bandwidth and test the broadcast before going live.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To stream a survival game on YouTube, verify and enable live streaming on your channel, create a stream in YouTube Studio, connect an encoder such as OBS with your game capture and YouTube stream key, then test the preview before going public. Start the setup well before stream day: first-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, and YouTube recommends preparing the encoder at least two hours ahead.

Before you set up the stream

Check channel eligibility

YouTube requires a verified channel and says the channel must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Streamers must be at least 16 years old. First-time live streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance rather than just before you plan to play. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.

Choose how to broadcast

YouTube supports streaming from a mobile device, webcam, encoder or console. For survival-game gameplay, an encoder is a practical choice when you want game capture, overlays, a microphone, or other external audio and video sources. A webcam or mobile broadcast can be simpler for a basic stream; a console may offer a direct route if you play on one. You do not need expensive equipment to begin. YouTube explains its supported streaming methods.

Set up a survival game stream with an encoder

  1. Plan the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio and enter the Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one, then set its title, privacy and other available details. Choose private or unlisted for a rehearsal if you do not want the test to be public. YouTube’s Live Control Room instructions cover creating and managing a stream.
  2. Copy the connection details into your encoder. In the stream’s settings, find the server URL and stream key, then enter them in the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who gets it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not show it in a screenshot, overlay or recording. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting. YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address” in its stream settings guide.
  3. Add the game and audio sources. In the encoder, select the game capture or display source that shows the game, then add the microphone or headset microphone you intend to use. Add a webcam only if you want face-camera video. Check that game audio and voice are both present and at useful levels; monitor with headphones to catch missing or excessively loud audio before viewers do.
  4. Check upload bandwidth. Use the upload speed available to the streaming computer, not just the connection’s download figure. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% headroom above the total streaming bitrate. For example, if your encoder sends 6 Mbps in total, aim for roughly 7.2 Mbps or more of available upload bandwidth. Other people and devices sharing the connection can reduce what is available to your stream. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers connection preparation.
  5. Choose latency for your connection and chat. Lower latency can make replies feel more immediate, which may suit a stream where you regularly interact with chat. YouTube cautions that lower latency can increase playback buffering. If the connection is unstable or viewers report interruptions, prioritize a more reliable viewing experience over the fastest possible chat response. YouTube outlines the trade-off in its latency settings guidance.
  6. Run a preflight before the event. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder at least two hours before the stream and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. Start the encoder feed, check the incoming preview in Live Control Room, and verify the watch page from both a computer and a phone. Confirm that the game image, voice and game audio are all working. A private or unlisted test gives you a chance to fix issues without making the rehearsal public. See YouTube’s encoder checklist.
  7. Go live, then end the broadcast cleanly. Once the feed appears correctly in Live Control Room, use the scheduled-stream flow to go live. At the end, end the event in YouTube and stop sending from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a longer stream will be archived automatically. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream management guidance.

Gear: start with what solves a real problem

A gaming setup commonly includes a microphone, headphones or headset, and optionally a webcam. Upgrade only when you can identify a need: a microphone for clearer voice, a webcam if you want to appear on screen, or headphones for monitoring the mix and avoiding speaker feedback. YouTube says expensive gear is not required to get started. Check that any device works with your computer and encoder before buying it; no particular models are established here. See YouTube’s basic streaming equipment guidance.

Keep the stream within YouTube’s rules

Use game footage, music, overlays and other material that you have the rights or permission to broadcast. A game being playable on your computer does not by itself establish that every soundtrack or other included material is cleared for a public livestream. Review the game publisher’s streaming policy and YouTube’s applicable copyright rules before adding music or third-party content. Also make the title and stream content accurately describe what viewers will see.
