How to Set Up a Wired PC and Wi-Fi Router for VR Streaming

A practical setup for PC VR streaming: wire the PC to the router, connect the headset on the same local network, and optimize its Wi-Fi signal before upgrading hardware.

For PC VR streaming, connect the computer to your router or access point with Ethernet, then connect the headset over Wi-Fi to that same local network. Use 5 GHz when supported, place the access point close to the play area, and check the signal and network path before buying new hardware. These steps can improve the conditions for a responsive stream, but no router standard alone guarantees low latency.

Check that your headset and streaming app are compatible

Before changing network settings, confirm that the app supports both your headset and its installed software version. Requirements differ by app and can change over time.

Steam Link’s current support page lists Meta Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest Pro; PICO 4 Ultra, PICO 4, and PICO Neo 3; and HTC Vive Focus Vision and Vive XR Elite. Check the page for the app’s current operating-system requirements and any updates: Steam Link headset and system requirements.

Connect the PC by Ethernet and the headset by Wi-Fi

  1. Wire the PC to the router or access point. Connect the computer’s Ethernet port to a LAN port on the router or access point. Steam Support says, “A wired network will provide the best result, and we highly recommend using an Ethernet connection if your Remote Play streaming client supports it.” See Steam’s suggested network settings.
  2. Connect the headset to Wi-Fi on the same local network. Select the network served by the router or access point that the PC uses. For Microsoft Mixed Reality Link with Quest 3, Microsoft specifically requires the wired PC and headset Wi-Fi to be on the same subnet; its troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the headset’s band and moving from 2.4 GHz to 5 or 6 GHz when applicable. See Microsoft’s Mixed Reality Link guidance.
  3. Select 5 GHz when available and suitable. Steam Link lists a 5 GHz channel and Wi-Fi 5 as its minimum router requirement, and also lists Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E. Those are Steam Link requirements, not universal requirements for every VR streaming app. Use the selected app’s own compatibility guidance.
  4. Start the streaming app on the PC and headset. Follow that app’s pairing or connection flow; the exact steps vary by app.

Place the router or access point for a strong headset connection

The PC’s Ethernet connection removes Wi-Fi from the host leg, but the headset still depends on a stable radio link. Steam notes that 5 GHz has shorter range than 2.4 GHz, while generally experiencing less interference from neighboring networks and wireless devices. Keep the router or access point near the play space, with as few walls, floors, metal objects, and electronic devices in the signal path as practical. More guidance is in Steam’s network recommendations.

Recommendations can be app-specific: VRChat advises using the same network for the PC and Meta Quest and prefers 5 GHz Wi-Fi on a Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E router. Treat that as VRChat guidance rather than a requirement for all streaming setups. See VRChat’s wireless PC-play guidance.

Use the existing router or add an access point?

Start with the router you already own. An additional or replacement router/access point is worth considering only if it addresses a specific limitation, such as missing the selected app’s minimum Wi-Fi capability or failing to provide a usable 5 GHz signal where you play.

Choice When it fits What to check
Use the existing router It meets the streaming app’s requirements and provides a suitable signal near the play area. PC Ethernet connection; headset band; signal strength and obstructions; same local network or subnet where the app requires it.
Add or replace a router/access point near the play area The existing equipment cannot provide the required band or a suitable connection in the play space. App compatibility; whether the PC and headset will remain on the same local network; placement and setup complexity.

Steam Link’s stated minimum is a 5 GHz channel with Wi-Fi 5; its page also lists Wi-Fi 6 and Wi-Fi 6E. A newer Wi-Fi standard by itself does not establish that latency will improve, and the cited support pages do not provide controlled latency comparisons between router models.

Troubleshoot a choppy or delayed stream

Check the existing connection before replacing equipment. Change one condition at a time where practical so it is clear what helped.

  1. Confirm the PC’s Ethernet link. Make sure the cable connects the PC to the router or access point, rather than leaving the PC on Wi-Fi.
  2. Check the headset’s Wi-Fi band. If supported, try 5 GHz instead of 2.4 GHz. Microsoft’s Mixed Reality Link guidance also mentions 6 GHz where applicable.
  3. Verify local-network access. Confirm that the devices are on the same local network; for Quest 3 with Mixed Reality Link, Microsoft specifies the same subnet.
  4. Improve the wireless path. Move the access point closer to the play space or reduce obstructions and sources of interference.
  5. Inspect streaming behavior in Steam Link. While a game is running, open the Steam overlay and use its in-game streaming settings panel to inspect streaming behavior. The settings panel can help identify what is happening, but it does not by itself prove that a router upgrade is needed.
  6. Consider hardware only if a limitation remains. If the current router cannot meet the selected app’s requirements or provide a suitable connection near the play area, consider a compatible router or access point.

What a router upgrade can—and cannot—tell you

Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E may match the recommendations or requirements of particular apps, but the available support guidance does not establish that buying either standard alone will reduce latency by a particular amount. Router placement, interference, the headset’s wireless connection, and the local-network relationship all matter. No controlled latency results are available in these cited sources for ranking router models or promising a millisecond outcome.
