For consistent aim, set up the wired mouse in distinct layers: connect it reliably, choose a stable DPI and supported report rate, separate Windows desktop pointer behavior from game input, then tune sensitivity in the game. There is no universally best DPI or polling rate; the useful setting is one you can keep consistent and control comfortably.
1. Connect the mouse and confirm it is recognized
Plug the mouse into a direct USB port on the computer where practical, rather than a hub or adapter. Razer gives this advice specifically for peripherals using its HyperPolling technology; it is not a requirement for every ordinary wired mouse. See Razer’s HyperPolling guidance.

Check that the pointer moves and that any manufacturer software recognizes the device. If your mouse has onboard memory or requires software for configuration, follow the instructions for that exact model: available controls and where settings are saved differ between devices.
2. Choose a stable DPI
DPI describes how far the cursor or sensor output moves in relation to physical mouse movement. Choose a setting that gives you comfortable, repeatable control once paired with your game sensitivity. Configure only the DPI stages you actually use, and disable or avoid a DPI-cycle button if an accidental press changes sensitivity during a match.

- HERO Gaming Sensor: Next generation HERO mouse sensor delivers precision tracking up to 25600 DPI with zero smoothing, filtering or acceleration
- 11 programmable buttons and dual mode hyper-fast scroll wheel: The Logitech wired gaming mouse gives you fully customizable control over your gameplay
- Adjustable weights: Match your playing style. Arrange up to five 3.6 g weights for a personalized weight and balance configuration
- LIGHTSYNC technology: Logitech G LIGHTSYNC technology provides fully customizable RGB lighting that can also synchronize with your gaming (requires Logitech Gaming Software)
- Mechanical Switch Button Tensioning: A metal spring tensioning system and metal pivot hinges are built into left and right computer gaming mouse buttons for a crisp, clean click feel with rapid click feedback
There is no source-backed universal best DPI. Logitech notes that lower DPI is common in tactical shooters, while some players prefer higher DPI; that is context, not a rule for every player or game. Its gaming mouse guide discusses DPI and sensor considerations, while its G PRO support guide shows controls for that particular product.
3. Set a supported report rate
Report rate is how often the mouse sends position information to the computer. Pick a rate your mouse and computer support, then leave it unchanged while judging how the setup feels. The available settings and software controls depend on the mouse.

For a product-specific example, Logitech’s G502 software article documents rates from 125 to 1,000 reports per second in software mode and recommends 500 for most PCs. Logitech’s G PRO guide also recommends 500 for most PCs and describes onboard-memory limits for that model. These are manufacturer recommendations for the specified products, not proof that 500 is best for every mouse, computer, or player. See the G502 configuration article and G PRO guide.
4. Decide what to do with Windows pointer acceleration
Windows’ “Enhance pointer precision” setting changes desktop pointer behavior by applying acceleration. It is not the same thing as a game’s own mouse-input mode. Microsoft’s general mouse-settings guidance recommends the setting for making the desktop pointer more accurate during slow movement. Logitech’s gaming-software guidance for supported mice recommends leaving its acceleration option unchecked for gaming accuracy, while recognizing that preferences can differ. Those recommendations address different contexts; the desktop advice is not a competitive-game prescription.

To find the setting, open Windows Settings and look under Bluetooth & devices > Mouse for related mouse settings or additional mouse options; labels and navigation can vary by Windows version. In the classic Mouse Properties window, open Pointer Options and find Enhance pointer precision. Microsoft’s support page covers current and older navigation, so use the labels shown on your Windows build.
5. Check the game’s input mode and tune sensitivity there
If the game provides a raw mouse input option, check its current state in the game’s settings before adjusting sensitivity. Raw input and the Windows desktop cursor path are distinct. Microsoft Learn explains that Windows applies pointer acceleration to data used for ordinary pointer movement: “The advantage to WM_MOUSEMOVE, however, is that Windows applies pointer acceleration (also known as ballistics) to the raw mouse data, which makes the mouse pointer behave as customers expect.” The documentation adds: “While WM_MOUSEMOVE is ideal for moving mouse pointers, it is not so good for moving a first-person camera, since the high-definition precision will be lost.” Read Microsoft’s explanation of high-definition mouse movement.

Once the game input mode is set, adjust in-game sensitivity to suit your controlled movement. Change it in small, deliberate increments rather than changing DPI, report rate, and sensitivity together; otherwise, it is difficult to tell which change affected your control.

Keep enough desk space to move the mouse through the range you need. Start from a consistent position, route the cable so it does not catch on the desk or other objects, and use a surface that tracks reliably with your sensor. Logitech notes that some optical sensors can have trouble on transparent, glossy, or less reflective surfaces in its mouse guide.

A mouse pad is an optional practical choice if your desk surface is inconsistent or the available movement area is limited. No pad material or model is established here as a performance upgrade.
7. Evaluate changes one at a time
Keep a short record of the settings that affect your setup. When you want to make an adjustment, change one item, play enough to judge whether control feels more consistent, and keep or revert that change before trying another.
- DPI stage or stages enabled
- Report rate
- In-game sensitivity and raw-input setting, if available
- Windows “Enhance pointer precision” state
- Mouse position, cable route, and surface
This process helps you distinguish a real improvement in your own control from the effects of several simultaneous changes. It does not imply a measured competitive-performance gain: the cited sources provide setup guidance and product features, not an independent statistic showing how much these choices improve match outcomes.
