Check the extender’s signal status and test internet access from a connected device. If its router link is weak, move it closer to the router; if a stable wireless link is not possible, a wired Access Point mode may be a better fit when supported.
1. Check your extender’s setup options
Find the exact model number and use its current quick-start guide or manual. Setup steps and supported modes vary by model and software. TP-Link, for example, documents setup through an app, a browser, or WPS; use the procedure specified for your device: TP-Link range extender configuration guide.

2. Pair the extender with the router
Use one of the pairing methods your model supports. If you use WPS, follow the device’s instructions. TP-Link’s documented WPS flow is to press the router’s WPS button and then the extender’s within two minutes. If WPS is unavailable or fails, try the model’s app or browser setup instead. Some ISP gateways disable WPS.

For a dual-band router, check whether your extender requires separate setup for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. In TP-Link’s cited WPS instructions, if only one of the two band indicators lights, repeat the pairing steps. That instruction is model-specific, not a universal requirement.

3. Find a useful placement
After pairing, move the extender to a raised, open spot between the router and the weak-signal area. Halfway is a starting point, not a guaranteed best location: the extender needs to receive a usable signal from the router as well as reach the area where coverage is needed. TP-Link’s placement guidance emphasizes router distance and obstacles; NETGEAR likewise advises keeping an extender within router range and avoiding thick walls and interfering electronics (NETGEAR placement advice).
Use distance as a starting clue
For its products, TP-Link suggests about halfway between the router and weak-signal area. It gives illustrative ranges of 25–40 feet for external-antenna models and 20–35 feet for internal-antenna models only when there are few obstacles and the router signal remains strong there. These are manufacturer recommendations, not universal distances or guarantees. Walls may mean placing the extender closer to the router.

Raise it and keep the path open
Place the extender near the router’s height. TP-Link suggests around four feet off the floor and an open surface such as a shelf or desk rather than the floor or a corner. Avoid mirrors, large metal surfaces, thick walls, cabinets, and masonry where possible. Keep it away from likely sources of interference such as microwaves, cordless phones, refrigerators, and baby monitors.
Adjust antennas only if your model has them
For models with external antennas, TP-Link recommends keeping them vertical and facing the extender toward the router. Check your model’s manual before adjusting antenna position; designs differ.

4. Verify the router link and test internet access
Check the extender’s signal LED or management page after moving it. Indicator colors and meanings differ by model, so use your manual to interpret them. For products covered by TP-Link’s status guidance, a solid Signal LED indicates a successful router connection, while a red signal indication is an example of a weak link.
Then connect a phone, laptop, or other client to the extender and confirm that it can reach the internet. Check that the client is connected through the extender when testing. A different Wi-Fi name may make the connection easier to identify, but some systems copy the router’s settings or support seamless roaming.

- Dual Band WiFi Extender: Up to 44% more bandwidth than single band N300 WiFi extenders. Boost Internet WiFi coverage up to 1200 square feet and connects up to 30 devices(2.4GHz: 300Mbps; 5GHz: 433Mbps)
Improve a weak connection with small moves
- Move the extender a little closer to the router.
- Wait for it to reconnect, then check its model-specific signal indicator or management status.
- Test internet access again from a client connected through the extender.
- Repeat until the router link is stable and the weak area has usable coverage.
5. Consider wired Access Point mode if repeating is unstable
If distance or obstacles prevent a stable wireless link, a supported wired Access Point (AP) mode may work better. TP-Link’s placement guidance says to switch to AP mode when obstacles cannot be avoided or the distance is too great for a stable wireless connection. In that arrangement, place the device near the area that needs coverage, connect it to the router with Ethernet, and configure AP mode using the model’s instructions. Confirm that your extender supports this mode.

An extender repeats existing Wi-Fi and can be useful for a targeted weak area when it can maintain a good connection to the router. Other options depend on the home’s layout, construction, available wiring, and whether the goal is a specific dead zone or whole-home coverage. TP-Link describes powerline adapters as using electrical wiring and mesh systems as an option for whole-home coverage; these approaches have different setup and compatibility requirements (TP-Link comparison of extenders, powerline, and mesh).
