The whitelist-style method is a Steam-group visibility restriction: enter your group’s numeric Steam Group ID under Server Settings. With a non-zero ID, the server is visible only to members of that group. You can add a password for a second gate and use the Users tab for administrators, bans, and reserved slots.

The official Space Engineers Dedicated Server interface implements a whitelist by limiting server visibility to one Steam group. It is not a manually maintained list of Steam accounts and it is not the same control as the administrator, banned-user, or reserved-slot lists.
| Control | What it governs | Where to configure it |
|---|---|---|
| Steam Group ID | Which Steam group can see the server when the value is non-zero | Server Settings |
| Password | An additional credential required to join a protected server | Server Settings |
| Admins | Players who can use administrative functions | Users tab |
| Banned users | Individual Steam accounts denied access | Users tab |
| Reserved slots | Individual accounts prioritized for reserved connection slots | Users tab |
Every player who should discover the server must belong to the selected Steam group. A player can be in the group and still fail to connect if the server is password-protected, unreachable through the network, or blocked by another user rule.

Before you configure access
Prepare these items first:
- A Windows computer or hosting service that can run the Space Engineers Dedicated Server.
- A Steam group that contains every intended player.
- Administrator access to the computer if you will create a Windows service, open the firewall, or configure router forwarding.
- A decision about whether the server is LAN-only or reachable over the Internet.
- A note of the server’s chosen listen port and the machine’s local IP address if you will forward traffic from a router.
The whitelist setting is available in the official dedicated-server configuration tool. A third-party management layer is optional and is not required for Steam-group restriction.
Install the dedicated server
Install through Steam
- Open the Steam client and select Library.
- Change the library filter to Tools.
- Find Space Engineers Dedicated Server and install it.
This installs the server executable and its configuration interface on the computer that will host the world.
Install with SteamCMD
If the Steam client is not installed, Keen Software House documents SteamCMD installation with app ID 298740. Run the command from the SteamCMD directory, replacing the destination with a real folder path:
steamcmd.exe +login anonymous +force_install_dir somedirectorypath +app_update 298740 +quit
Keep the server files in a folder to which the service account has read and write access. Do not place a service installation in a location where Windows permissions prevent the server from saving worlds or configuration changes.
Open the configuration interface
Foreground or console operation
- Run
SpaceEngineersDedicated.exe. - Choose Local/Console.
- Select Continue to server configuration.
- Set a server name and choose or create the world that the server will load.
- Configure the access and network fields described in the following sections.
- Click Save & start.
Saving before starting matters: the group ID, password, port, and other fields must be written to the server instance that will actually run.

For unattended restarts, launch the executable as an administrator, add an instance, assign that instance a unique service name, and configure the instance. Service creation and management require administrator rights. A service runs in the background rather than keeping the configuration window open, so record which instance contains the world and access settings.
Create or select the Steam group
Use a Steam group whose membership you control. Add every player who should be able to discover the server before testing visibility.

- Open the group’s page in Steam.
- Choose Invite Friends.
- Look at the resulting invitation URL.
- Copy the long number that follows
invitegid=. That number is the group’s numeric ID.
Copy only the digits. Do not paste the group name, the complete URL, spaces, or quotation marks into the server field. If the group has several similar pages, verify that the ID came from the group intended for this server.
Enter the group ID as the whitelist
- In the dedicated-server configuration window, open Server Settings.
- Locate Steam Group ID.
- Enter the numeric ID obtained from the invitation URL.
- Leave the field at zero only when you do not want a group visibility restriction.
- Save the configuration and start, or restart, the server instance.
Keen Software House describes a non-zero value as making the dedicated server visible only for the given Steam group. The setting therefore acts as the whitelist-style control even though the interface does not label it “Whitelist.” A player outside the group should not discover the server in the normal server list.
Use the Users tab for individual permissions
Open the Users tab when access needs to differ between group members. The interface can select accounts from your Steam friends list or from the world’s player history.
Administrators
Add trusted accounts to the administrators list when they need server-management privileges. Group membership alone does not make a player an administrator.
Banned users
Add a specific Steam account to the banned list when that person must be denied even if they remain in the Steam group. The documentation defines a Steam ID as the account’s unique numerical identifier in 64-bit format.
Reserved slots
Add selected accounts to reserved slots when they should retain a connection opportunity during a full-server situation. This is a capacity-priority rule, not a replacement for the group restriction.
Keep these lists conceptually separate: the group ID determines who can see the server, while the Users tab applies account-level roles and exceptions after you have identified the relevant Steam accounts.
Add a password when group membership is not enough
The same Server Settings area includes a password field. A password adds another access check for people who can already discover the server through the group. Give the password to the intended players through a private channel and change it if it is shared beyond the community.

Use the controls for different purposes:
- Use the Steam Group ID to keep the listing limited to a defined community.
- Use a password when you want an additional secret that must be entered at connection time.
- Use bans to remove particular accounts without changing group membership.
- Use administrators and reserved slots for operational privileges and capacity priorities.
Make an Internet-hosted server reachable
Choose the listen port
The official default listen port is 27016. The configuration tool can change it, so use the value shown in your instance rather than assuming the default after editing settings.
Forward UDP traffic
- Give the server computer a stable local address, preferably through a router DHCP reservation.
- In the router, forward incoming UDP traffic on the configured listen port to that local address.
- Create a matching inbound firewall rule on the server computer.
- If you changed the port, apply the new number in both the router rule and firewall rule.
- Restart the server after changing network settings.
Forwarding the port does not bypass the group restriction; it only allows connection traffic to reach the server. A public, static IP is useful for Internet hosting because players have a stable address, but the group ID remains the access-control mechanism.

LAN-only operation
For a local network, players can connect through the same LAN without exposing the instance to the public Internet. You still need a non-zero group ID if you want only group members to see the listing, and the Windows firewall must allow the server’s traffic on the selected network profile.
Choose the right combination of controls
For a small private group, a non-zero Steam Group ID may be sufficient: members can discover the listing while people outside the group cannot normally see it. A password is useful when membership is broad, temporary, or managed by several people and you want a second secret before anyone joins. It is not a substitute for correcting group membership.
For a community with moderators, combine the group restriction with the Users tab. Give administrator status only to accounts that need it, keep banned users listed individually, and use reserved slots for people who must be able to connect when the server is full. These controls solve different problems and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Also decide whether discoverability or network isolation is your primary goal. A group-restricted Internet server still needs a forwarded UDP port and firewall rule. A LAN-only server reduces public exposure but does not remove the need for the correct group ID, local firewall access, and a working server process.

Keep membership and credentials organized
Use one clearly named Steam group for each server community or access policy. When someone should no longer discover the server, remove that Steam account from the group; when someone needs an exception because of misconduct, use the banned-user list rather than changing the group for everyone. Keep a private record of who manages the group, who has administrator rights, and where the current password is distributed.
After changing the password, tell players through a private channel and verify the new value with one allowed account. If you change the Steam Group ID, password, port, or user lists in the configuration interface, save the instance and restart it so the running process uses the new values. With multiple service instances, always confirm that you edited the instance that owns the public listing and world.

Test the restriction before inviting everyone
- Start the configured server and wait until the world is fully running.
- Ask a Steam account that belongs to the group to search for the server.
- Confirm that the allowed account can see the listing and, if applicable, pass the password prompt.
- Ask an account that is not in the group to search from the same network or an outside connection.
- Confirm that the outside account cannot see the server.
- If the result is wrong, stop the server before correcting the ID, membership, or network configuration.
This two-account check distinguishes a real group restriction from a server that is merely hard to find because of a port or firewall problem. Test again after moving the world to a new host, changing the group, or creating another service instance.

Troubleshoot a server that is missing or still visible
No group member can see the server
- Reopen Server Settings and verify that the Steam Group ID is numeric and non-zero.
- Compare the digits with the value after
invitegid=; a copied group URL or group name will not work as the ID. - Confirm that the test account has actually joined the selected group.
- Check whether the server instance you edited is the instance you started, especially when several Windows-service instances exist.
- Verify the configured network type, listen port, router forwarding, and Windows firewall rule.
- Confirm that the router forwards UDP to the current local address of the server computer.
A non-member can see the server
- Check that the running instance has the intended non-zero ID rather than a different configuration with the field set to zero.
- Stop and restart the instance after saving a changed ID.
- Make sure the outside account is not testing with a Steam account that is also a member of the group.
- Check that you did not edit one server instance while the public listing belongs to another.
The listing appears but joining fails
- Check the password, including capitalization and accidental spaces.
- Verify that UDP forwarding and the firewall rule use the same port shown in the server configuration.
- Review the Users tab for an unintended ban.
- Confirm that the world and server process are still running and that the host has enough available CPU and memory.
Self-hosting requirements and hosting choices
Keen Software House’s dedicated-server guide lists the following publisher-stated figures. They are planning values, not a performance guarantee for every world size, mod set, or player count.
| Resource | Minimum listed figure | Recommended listed figure |
|---|---|---|
| CPU | 3.2 GHz | 4.5 GHz |
| Logical cores | 3 | 3 |
| Memory | 6 GB RAM | 10 GB RAM |
| Bandwidth | 5 Mbps | Not separately stated in the guide’s figures |
| Public addressing | Not required for a LAN-only server | Static public IP recommended for Internet hosting |
A self-hosted Windows machine gives you direct control over the configuration UI, files, backups, firewall, and service lifecycle. It also makes you responsible for patching, power failures, router configuration, and exposing a machine to the Internet.
Managed hosting is an alternative when you do not want to maintain Windows networking. Keen Software House identifies GTX Gaming as its official PC host and Nitrado as its official Xbox host. Availability, controls, pricing, and current terms can change, so confirm that the provider exposes the Steam-group setting or an equivalent dedicated-server configuration before committing. Hosting is a deployment choice, not separate whitelist software.
Optional management with Torch
Torch is not necessary for the official Steam-group restriction. Its project README describes it as a successor to SE Server Extender with a WPF interface, live management tools, chat interaction, an entity manager, an organized configuration editor, and a plugin system.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo try it, download the latest release, extract it to its own directory, and run its executable. An existing DedicatedServer64 installation can also be used. Because Torch is a third-party layer that can change independently of Keen’s server interface, keep the official dedicated-server configuration as the reference for the Steam Group ID, port, password, and user lists. Add Torch only when its live-management or plugin features solve a problem you actually have.
Operational checklist
- The dedicated server is installed with Steam or app ID
298740through SteamCMD. - The correct server instance and world are selected in
SpaceEngineersDedicated.exe. - Every intended player belongs to the selected Steam group.
- The numeric value after
invitegid=is entered in Steam Group ID. - The server was saved and restarted after the change.
- Password, administrator, ban, and reserved-slot settings match their separate purposes.
- The configured UDP port—27016 by default—is allowed through the firewall and forwarded by the router when Internet access is required.
- An allowed account and an outside account have both checked visibility.
- Backups, updates, and service credentials are managed separately from player access.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a checkbox literally called Whitelist?
No. The official dedicated-server tool uses the Steam Group ID field. Entering a non-zero numeric group ID makes the server visible only to that Steam group.
Where do I find the Steam Group ID?
Open the group page in Steam, choose Invite Friends, and copy the long number after invitegid= in the invitation URL. Enter only the digits in Server Settings.
Best Value
Can I whitelist individual Steam accounts instead of a group?
The documented whitelist-style control is group visibility. Use the Users tab for individual administrators, banned users, and reserved-slot users; it is not a replacement for the group setting.
Does a password replace the Steam Group ID?
No. A password adds another check for players who can discover the server. The group ID controls visibility, while the password protects the connection.
What port does a dedicated server use?
The official default listen port is UDP 27016. If you change it, use the configured value for both router forwarding and the Windows firewall rule.
Why can’t a group member see my server?
Check that the ID is numeric and non-zero, the player joined the exact group, and you edited the running instance. Then check network type, UDP forwarding, the firewall, and the server’s local address.
Can I run the whitelist on a LAN-only server?
Yes. Keep the non-zero Steam Group ID and allow the selected port through the local Windows firewall. Router forwarding and a public static IP are relevant only when players connect over the Internet.
Do I need Torch to create a whitelist?
No. Torch is optional third-party management software. The official dedicated-server interface is sufficient for Steam-group restriction, passwords, and user lists.
The Bottom Line
Install the official Dedicated Server, find the group number after invitegid=, enter it under Server Settings → Steam Group ID, save and restart, then test with one group member and one non-member. Add a password, Users-tab rules, UDP forwarding, or Torch only when those separate needs apply.
