Use txAdmin’s built-in player whitelist to control who can join your FiveM server. Choose the access mode that matches your community—approved license, Discord membership, a Discord role, or administrator-only access—then optionally publish the requirement in the server browser with the allowlist convars. The browser padlock and instructions tell players what is required; they do not enforce admission by themselves.
This guide explains the complete setup, how to choose a mode, how to edit server.cfg, how to test approved and unapproved accounts, and how to avoid confusing a player whitelist with ACE permissions.

What a FiveM whitelist actually does
A whitelist is an admission policy. It decides whether a connecting player is eligible to enter the server before normal gameplay access is granted. On a role-play or private community server, that can mean approving applications, limiting entry to members of a Discord community, requiring a particular Discord role, or temporarily closing the server to everyone except administrators.

A hosting provider can run the server for you, but hosting is an operational choice, not a prerequisite for the whitelist feature.

There are two separate parts to a clear setup:
- Enforcement: txAdmin’s player whitelist decides who is admitted.
- Communication: server-list settings tell prospective players that access is restricted and explain how to qualify.
Configure both when possible. A lock icon or an instruction message without a working admission rule merely describes a policy; it does not implement one.
Choose the whitelist mode before changing settings
txAdmin documents four built-in approaches. Select one according to who grants eligibility and how often that decision changes.

The documentation identifies these modes but does not prescribe one for every server. An approved-license workflow gives you the most direct application decision. Discord-based modes reduce manual approval work when your community already manages identity there. Admin-only access is a restriction for exceptional periods, not a substitute for a normal community policy.
Prerequisites and preparation
Before configuring the policy, make sure the server is running through FXServer with txAdmin available. txAdmin is included with FXServer, so a separate dashboard installation is not required for the built-in whitelist.
- Start the server and confirm that you can sign in to txAdmin with an account intended for trusted staff.
- Decide whether eligibility is based on staff approval, Discord membership, a Discord role, or administrator status.
- Write the player-facing requirement in plain language before you enable it. Include the application location or Discord invite, the required role if applicable, and the expected approval step.
- Keep a second administrator account or another recovery path available before changing access controls, so a mistaken restriction does not leave the team without management access.
- Back up your current
server.cfgbefore adding or editing convars.
Do not publish txAdmin credentials, staff-only identifiers, or private moderation notes in the public instructions.
Configure the player whitelist in txAdmin
The exact wording and placement of controls can vary between txAdmin releases. Use the current player-access or whitelist area in the running dashboard rather than relying on an old screenshot or a copied click path.

- Open txAdmin. Sign in to the panel associated with the FXServer instance you want to protect.
- Find the player whitelist settings. Look for the section that manages player access or whitelist mode. The label may change between releases, but it is distinct from general staff permissions and from ACE configuration.
- Select one mode. Choose approved license, Discord server member, Discord role, or admin-only access according to the policy you decided on.
- Complete the mode-specific settings. For an approved-license policy, identify the workflow staff will use to review and approve applicants. For a Discord policy, select or connect the relevant Discord community and, when using role access, specify the role that confers eligibility.
- Save or apply the setting. Confirm that the dashboard reports the new policy as active. If txAdmin asks to reload or restart a component, follow that prompt rather than assuming an unsaved screen changed the live server.
- Add the first eligible test account. Use a controlled account that staff can identify. Do not test only with an administrator account, because administrative access can mask an incorrectly configured player rule.
Approved-license workflow
With this mode, a player applies through the process your community defines and staff approve the account in the management interface. Establish a consistent review procedure: verify the application, approve the correct player identity, and record why an approval was declined or revoked in your private staff system. The whitelist is only as reliable as the identity you approve; approving the wrong identifier can admit the wrong account or leave a legitimate applicant unable to connect.
Discord-member workflow
Tell players exactly which Discord server they must join and how their FiveM identity is associated with that membership. The available documentation identifies Discord membership as a mode but does not provide a universal integration troubleshooting procedure. If a member is denied, check the integration configuration, the account they used to connect, and whether the membership change has propagated before changing the whitelist policy.
Discord-role workflow
Role-based access adds a second decision: joining the Discord server is not enough; the player must hold the specified role. Document the role name exactly, give staff a process for assigning and removing it, and review whether former staff or banned members still retain it. A role policy requires coordination between Discord moderation and the server’s access settings.
Admin-only workflow
Use admin-only mode when the server should be inaccessible to ordinary players, such as during maintenance or an incident. Announce the restriction through your normal community channel, and create a checklist item to return to the intended mode after the work is complete. Leaving admin-only enabled is a common way to make a healthy server appear broken to its community.
Show the requirement in the FiveM server browser
Cfx.re documents two sets convars for communicating an allowlist in the server browser:

The first setting indicates that the server has an allowlist. The second supplies the instructions players see for qualifying.
Write instructions that answer the player’s next question rather than merely saying “whitelisted.” For example, identify the Discord community, the application channel, the required role, or the fact that staff approval is required. If your process changes, update the text at the same time as the txAdmin policy.

Cfx.re announced on May 28, 2026 that the server-list padlock and instructions are shown to players and emphasized that the server owner is responsible for accurately indicating whether an allowlisting process exists. Treat the browser text as a public promise: do not display a lock if the server is open, and do not claim that joining Discord is sufficient when a staff approval or role is also required.
Why the browser settings do not replace txAdmin enforcement
sv_appearAllowlisted and sv_allowlistInstructions communicate access requirements. They are not, by themselves, a complete player admission system. A server can display a padlock while still allowing everyone in if no server-side whitelist is configured.
For an enforced policy, configure the corresponding player whitelist in txAdmin or another deliberately selected server-side system. Then make the browser message describe that exact policy. If the two disagree, players receive confusing errors and staff spend time diagnosing a communication problem that looks like a connectivity problem.
ACE permissions are a different layer
FiveM’s ACE system controls permissions for principals, objects, commands, and resources. The documented commands include:
add_ace <principal> <object> allow
add_ace <principal> <object> deny
add_principal <child_principal> <parent_principal>add_ace grants or denies a principal access to an object, while add_principal establishes inheritance between principals. These rules are useful for staff commands and resource permissions—for example, deciding which administrators can run a management command. They are not described as a replacement for txAdmin’s player admission whitelist.
Keep the concepts separate:
- Player whitelist: decides whether a player may enter the server.
- ACE: decides what an already connected principal may do when a command or resource checks permissions.
- txAdmin staff access: decides who can operate the management panel.
Granting someone an ACE permission does not automatically make that person eligible under your player whitelist, and whitelisting a player does not automatically grant staff powers.
Validate the setup with two controlled accounts
Validation should test both enforcement and communication. This is a recommended operating check, not a substitute for reading the current txAdmin status.

- Prepare an unapproved account. Use an account that does not satisfy the selected mode: no staff approval, no Discord membership, no required role, or no administrator status.
- Attempt to connect. Record whether the connection is refused and what message the player receives. A denial confirms that the admission rule is active; it does not prove that the browser description is accurate.
- Prepare an approved account. Add the account through the correct txAdmin workflow, or satisfy the Discord membership or role requirement.
- Connect with the approved account. Confirm that it can enter normally and that the account identity approved by staff is the same identity used by the client.
- Check the public listing. Look for the padlock and the instruction text. Verify that the wording names the correct Discord community, channel, role, or approval step.
- Repeat after a policy change. If you switch modes or revoke eligibility, test again rather than assuming the previous result still applies.
Common failure modes and fixes
The lock icon appears, but everyone can still join
The browser convar is probably set without an active txAdmin player whitelist. Configure the admission mode in txAdmin, save it, and retest with an unapproved account. The display setting alone is not enforcement.
An approved player is denied
Check that staff approved the identity actually presented by the connecting client. For Discord modes, verify the player joined the correct server, used the connected account, and holds the exact required role. Also confirm that the txAdmin change was saved and that any requested reload or restart completed.

A Discord member cannot pass a role requirement
Membership and role eligibility are different modes. A player who joined the Discord server may still lack the specified role. Review the role assignment and the integration configuration before changing the server to the less restrictive member mode.
Players cannot tell how to apply
Replace vague text such as “Whitelist required” with a concrete instruction in sv_allowlistInstructions. State where to apply, which Discord server to join, which role is needed, and whether staff approval is required.
Staff are locked out after a change
Do not test access-control changes only with staff accounts. Keep a recovery administrator path, stop making additional changes, and use txAdmin’s documented management access to restore the intended mode. Avoid publishing credentials while troubleshooting.
The server remains closed after maintenance
Admin-only mode is deliberately restrictive. Add a post-maintenance checklist item to return to approved-license, Discord-member, or Discord-role access and update the browser instructions if the process changed.

Review approved identities
For an application workflow, periodically review the approved list. Remove former members, banned players, duplicate identities, and accounts that were approved in error. Keep the private reason for each revocation so another moderator can understand the decision.
Synchronize Discord changes
Role-based access requires routine coordination. When a role is renamed, replaced, or split into several roles, update txAdmin and the public instructions together. When a member leaves or loses the role, confirm that the access result matches your policy.
Control administrative access
Limit txAdmin management access to trusted staff. Separate the people who can review applications from the people who can change the server’s global access mode when your organization needs that distinction. Never treat player eligibility as permission to administer the server.
Keep public instructions current
The server browser is often the first place a new player sees your policy. If the application channel, Discord server, role name, or review process changes, edit sv_allowlistInstructions and verify the listing after the next restart or configuration reload.

Application-based role-play server
Use approved-license mode. Publish the application location, state that staff approval is required, and maintain a private review record. This gives moderators a direct admission decision and avoids granting access solely because someone joined a Discord server.
Community server organized around Discord
Use Discord-member mode when membership itself is the intended requirement. Make the invite and account-connection expectations prominent, and avoid telling players that they need a special role if the mode does not check one.
Department or training server
Use Discord-role mode when a specific role represents verification or training completion. Name the role exactly and establish who assigns it. Removing the role should have a predictable access result.
Development or emergency maintenance
Use admin-only mode temporarily. Tell the community why the server is closed, restrict txAdmin changes to trusted staff, and restore the normal mode as soon as the maintenance window ends.
