To keep FFmpeg streaming to YouTube after you disconnect from SSH—or after an Indian VPS reboots—run it as a dedicated systemd service. First test the FFmpeg command and YouTube ingest connection interactively; then place the command in a protected service configuration, enable it at boot, and check both systemd logs and YouTube Studio. A service can restart a failed FFmpeg process, but it cannot by itself confirm YouTube is receiving a healthy broadcast.
What systemd does—and what it does not
systemd manages the FFmpeg process: it can start it, run it under a specified Linux account, launch it at boot, restart it after certain failures, and collect its logs. It does not validate your video, repair an invalid or revoked stream key, restore a failed network route, or confirm that YouTube has accepted the stream.
Plan to verify the broadcast in YouTube Studio as well as on the VPS. YouTube recommends testing with representative motion and audio and monitoring stream health. Its [live encoder guidance](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2853702) also recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP, for supported workflows.
Choose and test the FFmpeg stream settings
Check YouTube’s current requirements
Use YouTube’s live encoder settings page for the current codec, resolution, frame-rate, and bitrate combination you intend to send. The page lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS workflows, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. These settings can change, so check the current table rather than treating one bitrate as a universal minimum.

For reference, YouTube’s H.264 recommendations on that page, accessed October 3, 2026, include:
| Resolution and frame rate | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 480p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 360p at 30 fps | 1.5 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations for those H.264 settings, not guaranteed minimums or a promise that a particular VPS can sustain them. The complete YouTube table also includes minimum rates and recommendations for other codecs. Choose a setting the VPS can encode or relay reliably and its outbound connection can sustain.
Test the exact input and output before adding systemd
Install FFmpeg through a supported package source for your VPS distribution, or use a build you have verified. Identify the precise input file or live input URL, and confirm that the account intended to run the service can read it. FFmpeg commands depend on the input, installed build, and whether the tracks should be encoded or copied. Consult the [FFmpeg documentation](https://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.html) for command structure and supported protocols.

For a looping file, the command needs to read the media at real-time speed, repeat it only if that use is appropriate, produce compatible audio and video tracks, mux them into a supported output, and send them to the ingest URL selected in YouTube Studio. Do not assume a command written for another file or FFmpeg build will work unchanged. Run your intended command in a controlled session first; verify codec, frame size, frame rate, audio, and connection to YouTube before making it a service.

Use a dedicated, unprivileged Linux account
Create a separate account for the encoder rather than running FFmpeg as root. Give it read access to the source media and access only to directories it needs. Use explicit paths so the command does not depend on the environment of your SSH session.
Keep credentials out of public files and logs
Treat the YouTube stream key like a password. Do not put a real key in a public script or repository, a world-readable unit file, or shell history. Store credentials in a root-managed file with narrowly restricted permissions. If you use a systemd environment file, follow the syntax and quoting rules for the systemd version installed on your VPS; do not assume every shell expansion works there. Also check whether FFmpeg’s command line or logging setup could expose the full ingest URL and key.

YouTube Studio provides the stream URL and key for the selected broadcast. Confirm you are using the intended ingest details, and do not publish them in screenshots, support requests, or logs that others can read.
Create the systemd unit
Create a service file under /etc/systemd/system/, for example /etc/systemd/system/youtube-ffmpeg.service. The following is a template, not a complete FFmpeg command: replace the placeholders with the paths, account, and tested command for your setup. Keep secrets in a separately protected credential file rather than inserting a real key here.
[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube live stream
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=streamer
Group=streamer
WorkingDirectory=/srv/youtube-stream
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg [your tested FFmpeg options and input] [your protected output configuration]
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=10
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
User=andGroup=set the unprivileged account that runs FFmpeg.WorkingDirectory=makes relative paths predictable; absolute paths in the command are even less dependent on context.ExecStart=must use the actual FFmpeg executable path and the command you tested. systemd does not run this line as an interactive shell, so shell syntax such as pipes or variable expansion does not work unless you explicitly invoke a suitable shell.After=andWants=express a dependency on the network-online target; they do not guarantee that YouTube is reachable or that the provider’s route is working.Restart=on-failureasks systemd to restart FFmpeg when it exits unsuccessfully. Ubuntu’s Noblesystemd.service(5)manual calls this the recommended choice for long-running services.Restart=alwaysalso restarts after a clean exit and may be unsuitable when a clean exit should end the stream.RestartSec=10adds a modest delay before a restart. Repeated failures can still hit systemd’s start-rate limits; check the journal rather than assuming retries will continue indefinitely.
Verify directive availability and behavior against the systemd documentation for your distribution and version. A community [systemd streaming example](https://github.com/) can illustrate a general pattern, but an example is not official validation for your input, command, or VPS.

Reload, enable, and start the service
- Reload unit definitions: run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadafter creating or changing the service file. - Enable it at boot: run
sudo systemctl enable youtube-ffmpeg.service. - Start it now: run
sudo systemctl start youtube-ffmpeg.service. - Check process state: run
sudo systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.service. Anactive (running)status means systemd sees a running process; it does not mean YouTube has a healthy broadcast. - Read recent service logs: run
sudo journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service -n 100 --no-pager. To follow new entries, usesudo journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service -f. - Verify the broadcast: open the selected broadcast in YouTube Studio and check the incoming preview and stream health. Test the stream with representative content before relying on it.
After editing the unit, reload systemd before restarting the service. Use sudo systemctl restart youtube-ffmpeg.service to apply a changed command or configuration, then inspect its status, logs, and YouTube Studio again.
Keep an SSH-disconnected stream running
Once FFmpeg is launched by systemd, it is no longer a child of your interactive SSH session. You can disconnect without intentionally stopping the service. To confirm that it is still running later, reconnect and check systemctl status, review the journal, and verify the live preview in YouTube Studio. If the VPS reboots, the enabled unit is configured to start during boot, subject to the command, media, network, credentials, and YouTube ingest being available.
How much VPS bandwidth does a YouTube livestream need?
Start with the selected encoder bitrate, then measure sustained outbound throughput from the actual VPS and network route with headroom above that bitrate. Account for the stream’s audio and protocol overhead, and confirm the provider’s current transfer or egress limits. YouTube recommends choosing settings to suit the connection and using a speed test; a brief peak result does not establish that the route can sustain a long broadcast.
Best Value

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
There is no verified universal Indian VPS size or provider plan for this setup. Compare current provider terms, CPU allocation (especially if software-encoding), storage for local media, and sustained outbound performance to YouTube. Run a preflight using the actual stream settings. A VPS being located in India does not by itself establish that it has adequate CPU, transfer allowance, or a reliable route.
Troubleshoot by identifying which layer failed
The unit fails immediately
- Check
systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.serviceand the journal for unit syntax errors or a missing executable. - Confirm the FFmpeg path is correct, the configured service user and group exist, and the working directory and input paths are accessible to that account.
- Check that the unit was reloaded after edits and that
ExecStart=is a valid systemd command line rather than shell syntax.
FFmpeg exits or keeps restarting
- Read FFmpeg’s error output in
journalctland fix the underlying failure before relying on restarts. - Check that the source media is present and readable, the stream key is valid, and the VPS can reach the ingest endpoint.
- Look for systemd start-rate-limit messages if failures recur quickly. A restart policy can retry a failed process; it cannot correct a bad key, missing media, exhausted provider quota, or a broken route.
FFmpeg is active but YouTube shows no healthy stream
- Confirm the selected YouTube broadcast, ingest URL, and key match the stream you intend to send.
- Check for video and audio output and compare the codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, and bitrate with YouTube’s current guidance.
- Use YouTube Studio’s preview and stream-health information to distinguish a live process from an accepted, usable broadcast.
The stream drops after running for a while
- Check the journal for FFmpeg errors and the provider’s current CPU and egress or transfer limits.
- Measure sustained outbound performance from the VPS rather than relying on a short-lived speed-test peak.
- Check YouTube Studio for an upstream broadcast or ingest issue. Restarting FFmpeg helps only if the process failure is recoverable and the underlying cause has cleared.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain a VPS and systemd unit, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist streaming to YouTube from the cloud. Upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera; your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and uploaded video streams at its original quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
The first day is free with no card, once per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is YouTube-only. If you are ready to try it, start your free day.
