To loop a playlist of local video files into a YouTube livestream, put compatible files in an FFmpeg concat list, then pass that playlist to FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 and real-time pacing with -re. You’ll also need an eligible YouTube channel, a stream URL and key from YouTube Studio, and an upload connection that can sustain your chosen settings.
1. Check YouTube eligibility and create the live stream
Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. See YouTube’s live streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or select a stream, then copy its server URL and stream key from the stream settings. YouTube explains these settings in its live stream settings guide.
- Keep the key private: treat it like a password. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio before using it again.
2. Check and prepare the videos
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer joins files without re-encoding, but it is not a media normalizer. The files need the same streams, codecs and time bases, with compatible properties. A mix of resolutions, frame rates, codecs, or files with and without audio can fail or produce bad transitions. FFmpeg documents these requirements in its concat demuxer documentation.
- Use the concat demuxer when the files already have matching stream layouts and compatible media properties.
- If files differ materially, prepare them to a common profile before streaming. FFmpeg’s concatenating media files FAQ recommends the concat filter for cases that require re-encoding.
- Check that each path exists and that files are complete. Inaccurate duration metadata or truncated inputs can lead to artifacts or gaps when FFmpeg moves to the next file.
3. Create the playlist file
Make a plain-text file named playlist.txt and list each video in the order it should play, using FFmpeg concat syntax:

Use valid local paths. If a filename or path contains special characters, quote or escape it according to the concat demuxer’s syntax. Keep the file beside the videos or use full paths, then check that every entry resolves before starting the stream.
4. Start FFmpeg and loop the playlist
Use this command as a starting point, replacing the destination with the exact RTMPS server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio:

Do not put a real stream key in a public script, screenshot or shared log.
This is an illustrative baseline, not a command tested against your files or FFmpeg build. Confirm that your installed FFmpeg includes the required encoders, and inspect its logs during a short test. The correct resolution, bitrate and frame rate depend on your source, target quality, upload capacity and the ingest settings YouTube provides.
5. Choose settings your connection can sustain
YouTube’s currently displayed encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 or AV1, AAC or MP3, and up to 60 fps, depending on the selected protocol and stream settings. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions when selecting your output profile.

| 1080p at 60 fps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s displayed recommendations, accessed 2026-10-03, not universal targets. Its table varies by resolution and frame rate. Select a bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably, and test the upload bitrate and stream before relying on it. RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure extension to RTMP.
6. Test the stream and check it while live
- Start with a short preflight stream before scheduling or relying on a long session. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. Confirm that video appears, audio is audible, and the stream reaches YouTube at a stable rate.
- Watch transitions between files and the playlist loop point for gaps, artifacts, missing audio or unexpected pauses.
- Review FFmpeg’s output for input, encoding or connection errors. Keep monitoring stream health while live.
Common problems and fixes
- FFmpeg rejects a file or the playlist: Check paths and concat syntax, then verify the inputs have compatible streams, codecs and time bases. Normalize mismatched files or use a filter-and-encode workflow.
- Playback breaks or glitches at a transition: Check for differing media properties, inaccurate duration metadata or a truncated file. Prepare a consistent set of complete inputs and test transitions before going live.
- The playlist plays only once: Confirm that
-stream_loop -1appears before the playlist’s-i. Inspect the FFmpeg logs and verify behavior with your installed version before a long stream. - YouTube does not receive the stream: Recheck the server URL and stream key copied from the Live Control Room, and look for connection errors in FFmpeg. If the key may have been exposed, reset it.
- Stream health reports instability: Reduce bitrate or output quality to a level the connection can sustain, then test again. YouTube advises testing upload bitrate; a wired connection may be an option, but no specific cable guarantees a stable stream.
Keep a long-running stream operational
An FFmpeg command running on your own computer depends on that computer and its network connection remaining available. For unattended operation, plan for process supervision and restart behavior, monitor available disk space, and check YouTube’s stream health. The exact setup depends on your operating system and host environment.
