Start by arranging the room, not by buying more gear. Fit your camera, microphone, light, and monitor around the desk while keeping a clear walkway; then check framing and audio in OBS. A compact setup depends on the dimensions and equipment you actually have, not a universal minimum desk size.
Plan the layout before buying equipment
Measure the desk’s usable width and depth, the equipment you already own, and the route people need to walk through the room. Place the desk and chair first, then decide where the camera, microphone, light, monitor, and cables can go without crowding the work surface or obstructing movement. - Measure desk depth as well as width: a device may fit across the desk but leave too little room for your keyboard, mouse, or working posture.
- Account for mounting hardware, cable plugs, and the clearance needed to adjust a camera or light.
- Trace cable routes before connecting equipment. Keep cables out of the walking path and away from chair wheels.
- Use equipment you already own if it can be positioned safely and does the job; add gear only to address a specific gap.
Fit and position the camera
Put the camera where it can show your face without taking up a large part of the desk. If you use a webcam, a monitor mount may help preserve desk space, provided it fits your monitor and does not interfere with the screen or its adjustment. Check the mount and connection against your actual equipment before purchasing anything.

- Open OBS and, in the Sources dock, select + and choose Video Capture Device to add the webcam as a source.
- Select the webcam from the device list. Resize and position its source in the preview; keep it clear of important on-screen content if you are also showing a game or desktop.
- Check the framing in the preview from your normal seated position. Adjust the camera or its mount before buying a replacement.

Place the microphone and balance audio
Position the microphone so it can pick up your voice without forcing you to reach across the desk or blocking the camera’s view. Check that its cable reaches without crossing the walkway. In OBS, speak at your normal level and watch the audio mixer while checking desktop or game sound. Light your face without using floor space
Put a light in front of you so it illuminates your face. In a tight room, a monitor-mounted light can be an option when a floor stand would obstruct movement. Verify that its mount fits your monitor and desk, and position it so it does not block the screen or make the camera framing awkward. Check the whole setup before going live
- Sit in your usual position and confirm the camera framing, monitor visibility, and access to the keyboard and mouse.
- Speak at a normal volume and check that your microphone remains audible over desktop or game audio in OBS.
- Move through the room as you normally would. Relocate anything that narrows or blocks the walkway.
- Adjust the cables, mounts, or device positions if anything catches, wobbles, or gets in the way.
