For the best sound from an existing smart speaker, start with a stable, unobstructed spot and follow the placement guidance for your exact model. Then finish setup in its companion app, connect it to your intended Wi-Fi network, and listen from where you normally sit. There is no single distance or position that suits every speaker and room.
1. Check your model’s placement requirements
Before choosing a spot, identify the speaker’s exact model and consult its manufacturer’s setup guidance. Recommended clearances differ: Apple says HomePod and HomePod mini need at least 15 cm of space around them, while Amazon recommends placing Echo Studio at least 15 cm from a wall, with clearance at the top and sides.

These are product-specific instructions, not universal acoustic rules. Put the speaker on a stable, level surface where it cannot easily fall, and avoid blocking its openings. Amazon also recommends putting Echo Studio at your preferred listening height; that is guidance for that model, not a fixed height requirement for all smart speakers.

2. Set it up in the right app
Use the setup flow for your speaker’s platform, rather than assuming that another brand’s instructions apply. Connect the device to the Wi-Fi network you want it to use, then complete any available room naming and sound settings in the app.
- HomePod or HomePod mini: Apple’s setup flow uses an iPhone or iPad and the Home app. Follow Apple’s setup instructions.
- Google speaker on Android: Google’s instructions use the Google Home app and list device, account, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and internet prerequisites. See Google’s Android setup guide.
- Echo Studio: Use the Alexa app and follow Amazon’s Echo Studio instructions.
3. Listen from your usual spot and adjust
Once setup is complete, play something familiar from your normal listening location. If the sound is not to your liking, make small changes to the speaker’s position while respecting the model’s clearance instructions. Listening and adjusting is a practical way to find a suitable spot in your room; it is not a guarantee of a measured sound-quality improvement.

4. If you want a stereo pair, check compatibility and spacing
A second speaker is optional. Google says its supported stereo pairs require two speakers of the same model in the same room; the app’s pairing flow also lets you assign left and right channels. Its general placement guidance for supported stereo pairs recommends about 1.2–2.4 m (4–8 ft) between speakers. Check Google’s stereo-pair guidance for supported models and setup details.

5. Treat bass expansion as an optional extra
A subwoofer is not required to set up or improve the placement of a single smart speaker. It may be an option if you want more bass and your speaker ecosystem supports it. Amazon describes Echo Sub as a compatible expansion for supported Echo setups and instructs users to place it on the floor in the same room as the Echo speakers or home theater.
