You can use Samsung DeX on a supported Galaxy Tab with its own screen; an external monitor is optional. Connect a compatible Book Cover Keyboard or a separate USB or Bluetooth keyboard, open Quick settings and tap DeX. Because keyboard-cover fit and DeX features vary by tablet and software version, check your exact model before buying accessories or following a menu path.
1. Check that your tablet and keyboard are compatible
Find your Galaxy Tab’s full model number and software version in Settings before choosing a keyboard. Samsung Book Cover Keyboards are model-specific, so do not assume a cover made for one Galaxy Tab fits another. Samsung also notes that screens and settings can vary with software version and carrier. Check Samsung’s compatibility information for your exact tablet before purchasing a cover; its keyboard and mouse with DeX guide describes the supported keyboard-cover setup.

2. Connect a keyboard and pointer
Book Cover Keyboard
Attach or connect a Book Cover Keyboard made for your tablet. Its built-in touchpad can serve as a pointer, so a separate mouse is not required for basic cursor control. Some touchpad gestures are not supported in DeX. Samsung describes this combination as a “laptop-mode experience”; that is manufacturer guidance, not a promise that every app behaves like its desktop counterpart.
USB or Bluetooth alternatives
You can also use a USB or Bluetooth keyboard, and pair or connect a mouse if you want separate pointer control. These are alternatives, not prerequisites for DeX. Connection options depend on the tablet and accessory. See Samsung’s DeX keyboard and mouse instructions for supported input methods.

3. Start DeX on the tablet
- Save open work first. Samsung warns that apps running during a DeX transition may close.
- Open Quick settings: swipe down with two fingers from the upper-right area of the screen.
- Tap DeX. On compatible keyboards, Samsung also documents pressing the Fn and DeX keys together.
These are not universal launch methods for every model or software version. Samsung documents an additional Home-screen standalone DeX entry flow on certain tablets running Android 16 with One UI 8.0; other supported setups use Quick settings. For your tablet’s available path, consult Samsung’s Galaxy tablet DeX guide and workspace and connection instructions.
4. Decide whether to use an external display
Standalone DeX uses the Galaxy Tab’s screen, so you can begin without a monitor or TV. If you want a larger display, supported tablets can connect to a monitor or TV by a compatible cable or wirelessly. Not every model supports every connection route.

Wired connection
Connect a compatible DeX or HDMI cable between the tablet and display. Unlock the tablet if prompted and accept the DeX prompt. Available connection steps and controls vary by device and display; use Samsung’s support instructions for the exact tablet and display combination if the prompt does not appear.

On supported configurations, open Settings > Connected devices > Samsung DeX > Connect wirelessly, select the display, and follow the approval prompts on the devices. Samsung’s DeX workspace and connection guide covers current standalone, wired, and wireless paths and their version caveats.

5. Set up DeX and keyboard preferences for work
While in DeX, open Settings > Samsung DeX. Depending on the tablet and connected display, available options can include display resolution and rotation, font size, screen timeout, keyboard, mouse, touchpad, and sound output. For the physical keyboard’s language, open Settings > General management > Physical keyboard. Samsung’s DeX screen guidance explains the DeX settings, while its Galaxy tablet keyboard guide covers typing preferences.
Samsung Keyboard also offers tablet settings for languages, text shortcuts, predictive text, and toolbar behavior. The option to show the Samsung Keyboard toolbar while using a physical keyboard appears only when an external keyboard is connected.

6. Arrange apps and switch between them
DeX presents supported apps in windows alongside a taskbar. Use window controls to open, minimize, maximize, snap, or close apps, and use the taskbar to move between them. Samsung documents Alt+Tab to switch running apps and Alt+F4 to close the current app. The Windows key may be replaced by a CMD or search key, depending on the keyboard. App behavior and window controls can vary.
An app generally cannot run simultaneously on both the tablet screen and an external display. Samsung also documents multiple desktop workspaces, up to four, on tablets running Android 16 with One UI 8.0; that workspace feature is version-specific, not a general capability to assume on older software. 7. Exit DeX without losing unsaved work
Save your work before switching DeX on or off, because apps running during the transition may close. On current tablets, you can turn DeX off from Quick settings. Disconnecting a cable or using the wireless display’s disconnect path may also end an external-display session. Other exit options depend on the Android and One UI version; see Samsung’s DeX exit instructions for the paths supported by your tablet.
