To set up a Galaxy A57, start the Setup Wizard, connect to Wi-Fi, and choose how to move your data. If your old phone is available, use Smart Switch or Android’s device-copy flow during setup. If it is not, restore a Google Account backup that was created on the old phone. Some downloads, app data, and other content may need separate recovery.
Before you start
- Charge both phones and make sure the A57 has enough free storage for the content you plan to transfer.
- Have the old phone’s screen-lock PIN or password ready; setup may ask for it to verify the device or restore a backup.
- Connect the A57 and, for wireless transfer, the old phone to a working Wi-Fi network. Google says copying can take from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the transfer.
- If you plan to connect the phones by cable, check their ports and the cable you already own. A suitable cable or adapter may be needed; a cable is not required for wireless transfer.
Do the transfer during initial setup if possible. Google recommends copying during setup because the option may not be available afterward. Exact screens can differ by setup path, software version, country, carrier, and source phone.

Start the Galaxy A57 setup
- On the A57’s welcome screen, select a language and tap Start.
- Review the displayed terms and accept them if you want to continue.
- Choose the offered setup path: transfer from an old phone with Smart Switch or Android’s copy flow, or set up the A57 manually.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and follow the prompts to sign in to your Google Account and Samsung account as applicable. If mobile-service activation is offered, choose whether to do it now or later.
- Continue through the remaining Setup Wizard screens. Samsung notes that screens and options may vary by carrier and setup path.
Choose a transfer method

Transfer data when your old phone is available
Use the A57’s Smart Switch setup
- On the A57, select the option to transfer data using Smart Switch or Easy Setup. Choose Galaxy or Android device (or iPhone/iPad if that is your old device).
- When the A57 displays a QR code, scan it with the old device and follow the prompts to connect the phones. If you choose a cable route instead, connect the devices with a compatible cable or adapter when prompted.
- Review the categories offered and select what you want to copy.
- Keep both phones available until they show that the transfer is complete. Some apps may continue installing afterward and may not open until installation finishes.
Use Android’s copy flow
- When the A57 asks whether to copy apps and data from an old device, tap Copy.
- Follow the prompts to connect by cable, or choose No cable for the wireless route.
- Unlock the old phone and follow the connection and selection prompts. Choose the data categories you want to transfer.
- Leave both devices available until the copy finishes. Google’s general estimate is a few minutes to a few hours; it is not a Galaxy A57-specific time guarantee.
Restore a Google backup without the old phone
This route works only if backup was enabled on the old device and a usable backup is available in the Google Account associated with it.

- During the A57’s copy-apps-and-data stage, continue through the options for proceeding without a cable or adapter.
- Choose the Google backup associated with the old phone and the correct Google Account.
- Enter the old phone’s screen-lock PIN or password if prompted.
- Choose the available data types and tap Restore. Keep the A57 connected to the internet while the restore runs.
- Continue through the remaining Setup Wizard prompts. Apps may take additional time to download and install.
What transfers—and what may not
Google says Android setup transfer can include apps and some app data, music, photos and videos, contacts stored on the phone or SIM, text messages and their multimedia, call history, wallpaper, and most phone settings. Settings coverage can depend on the phones and Android versions.

Some items may not copy through the standard Android transfer, including:
- Downloads such as PDF files, and photos, videos, or music kept in hidden folders.
- Apps installed outside Google Play, or data from apps that do not use Android backup.
- Non-Google accounts and their data, plus contacts or calendars synced through non-Google services.
- Ringtones and certain device settings.
These are general Android transfer limitations, not evidence of an A57 defect. Smart Switch options and results can also vary by device and setup path, so check important content on the A57 rather than assuming every app or category moved unchanged.

Finish app-specific restores and check missing content
- Open important apps and sign in to the accounts you used on the old phone. Follow each app’s own restore prompts where available.
- For WhatsApp, Google says conversations can restore from WhatsApp’s cloud after you sign in and open the app, but the relevant WhatsApp backup must have been enabled on the old device.
- Check downloads, hidden-folder media, non-Google accounts, and files stored in services that were not included in the phone transfer. Move them manually or use the relevant service’s own sync or restore process.
- Verify that contacts, messages, photos, and other important content are present before erasing or trading in the old phone.
Galaxy A57 software support at launch
Samsung’s March 25, 2026 launch announcement identifies Android 16 and One UI 8.5 as the A57’s software at launch. It also states a maximum of up to six generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades and up to six years of security updates for the A57/A37 series. Those are manufacturer support commitments, not a guarantee of when a particular carrier or region will receive each update.
