Set up a robot lawn mower by first identifying its navigation system: a physical boundary wire, satellite/GNSS virtual boundaries, or a hybrid of both. Then plan the lawn, position the charging station and any reference antenna, pair the mower with its app, install wire or create the digital map, and watch a complete test return to the dock. Measurements, app names, mapping modes, and safety rules vary by model, region, firmware, and date, so use the exact current operator manual before drilling, wiring, or changing a map.
Start with the mower’s exact navigation method
There is no universal installation recipe. Read the model label and current operator manual first, then identify which of these arrangements your mower uses:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Wired: a physical boundary wire marks the mowing area. Many wired systems also use a guide wire to lead the mower back to its charging station.
- Wire-free: the app defines virtual boundaries using satellite/GNSS positioning or another model-specific navigation system.
- Hybrid: the mower normally uses satellite positioning but can add wire in locations where signal conditions are difficult.
Husqvarna documents separate wired, EPOS and AIM procedures for supported Automower models. Its iQ documentation describes satellite precision delivered either through a Cloud correction network or a local reference station; Cloud coverage is not the same thing as cellphone coverage. The company also says wire can be added in heavily shaded areas on supported systems. Segway Navimow documentation likewise separates model-series procedures and offers different mapping modes by model. Do not transfer a clearance, wire dimension, app feature or satellite-service assumption from one product family to another.
How the two main setup approaches differ
| Setup aspect | Wired mower | Wire-free or virtual-boundary mower |
|---|---|---|
| How the boundary is defined | Physical boundary wire, generally with a guide wire on supported systems. | App-defined boundaries using satellite/GNSS or another model navigation system; some models allow hybrid wire assistance. |
| Installation work | Route the perimeter and guide wire, connect sections, secure them, and test docking. | Position the station and any required antenna or reference station, pair the app, and map the lawn. |
| What the yard can demand | Passage width, islands, slopes, separate areas and wire routing determine whether the mower can reach every zone. | Open-sky visibility, correction-service coverage, sensors and the accuracy of the mapped boundary are critical. |
| How a map is created | Some mowers navigate directly from the wires. Supported Husqvarna AIM models also build a virtual map during normal operation. | Mapping may be a guided walk, an autonomous perimeter drive or another model-specific process. |
| Changing the garden later | A cut or moved wire requires physical repair or rerouting. | Many changes can be made in the app, but only if the model supports map editing and the signal remains suitable. |
Manufacturer documentation establishes these functional differences. It does not establish a universal winner for accuracy, installation time, cost or reliability, so treat comparisons in those areas as model-specific.

Plan the lawn before placing equipment
Draw every area the mower must reach
Make a simple sketch showing the intended mowing boundary, the charging station, trees, beds, ponds, play equipment, slopes, narrow passages and any separate lawn area. Mark objects that should become islands or stay-out zones. Husqvarna’s layout examples distinguish open lawns from gardens with islands, remote sections, slopes and passages; those are planning examples, not a universal installation drawing.
Decide whether a separated area is connected by a passage the mower can traverse or must be treated as a secondary area that you move the mower into manually. A virtual map and a wire layout must both provide a physically reachable route; drawing two areas in an app does not create a path between them.
Remove temporary objects
Before a first mapping run, clear furniture, toys, hoses, decorations and other temporary obstacles. Husqvarna specifically advises removing such objects while supported AIM mowers build their initial map. Permanent hazards should be represented by the model’s boundary, island or stay-out features rather than left for the mower to discover.
Check signal and power assumptions
For a satellite system, inspect the sky view around the station and any reference antenna. Trees, walls and roof overhangs can affect the suitability of a location, but the exact requirement belongs to the mower’s manual. A correction network may be geographically limited and can change over time; verify availability for your region and model rather than assuming ordinary mobile-phone coverage is enough.
Choose and position the charging station
The station is both a power point and a navigation reference, so a poor location can cause failed docking even when the boundary or map is otherwise correct. Follow the exact manual for flatness, clearances, anchoring, cable routing, power protection and sky view.
Example: supported Husqvarna iQ wire-free installation
On the cited US iQ product-family instructions, Husqvarna specifies flat ground with an open sky view, a location within 30 feet of an outdoor outlet, and 6 feet of clear space for the mower to reverse from the station. Those dimensions apply to that documented product-family setup, not to every robot mower. The current regional manual may state different values.

Reference stations and antennas
If the system needs a local reference station or antenna, install and connect it exactly as directed, then complete any coverage or network check in the app. Other systems may obtain correction data from a network instead. Segway’s current manual-download materials describe Network RTK coverage checks for applicable models. A reference station, satellite service and charging station are separate requirements; do not assume one device replaces another.

Keep the approach open
Leave the approach route free of pots, edging, stored tools and other objects that can block a straight entry. Once the station is fixed, confirm that the mower can leave, turn and return without crossing an area you intend to exclude.
Install a boundary-wire system
Route the perimeter and islands
Use the mower’s own installation guide to trace the outer boundary, isolate beds and obstacles, and connect any secondary zones. The wire must form a continuous circuit compatible with the station. Use the supplied or specified wire, connectors, couplers and stakes; a physically similar cable is not automatically electrically compatible.
Plan islands and corners before fastening the wire. Avoid creating a narrow triangular pocket or an unreachable strip that the mower cannot enter or leave. Slopes and passages deserve a separate check because a route that works on level ground may not provide enough turning room on an incline.
Install and calibrate the guide wire
The following dimensions are from Husqvarna’s cited Automower guide-wire instructions and are not cross-brand standards:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Begin at the rear of the charging station, centered under its base plate.
- Use the same type of wire as the boundary wire.
- Run the guide wire at least 2 metres (6.5 feet) straight ahead of the station; the cited instructions specify 1 metre (3.3 feet) for the Aspire R4.
- Connect the far end to the boundary wire with the appropriate coupler.
- Calibrate the guide wire in the mower or app, then observe the mower following it and docking.
In that documented setup, avoid sharp angles greater than 45 degrees, keep at least 30 centimetres (12 inches) between guide and boundary wire, and place the wire diagonally when it crosses a slope. If your model’s manual gives different dimensions, its instructions take priority.

Handle passages deliberately
Passages can be too narrow for a mower to turn, or can cause a boundary signal to be read incorrectly. Husqvarna’s cited Automower guidance calls for at least 2 metres (6 feet 6 inches) between boundary wires in a passage without a guide wire, and 60 centimetres (24 inches) where a guide wire leads through it, with model exceptions. The guide wire must remain at least 30 centimetres (12 inches) from a boundary wire in that setup. Measure the actual model’s requirements before burying or staking anything.
Secure, connect and inspect
Lay the wire on the surface with stakes or install it at the depth specified by the manual. Make smooth turns, protect connectors from moisture as directed, and verify that the loop is closed before starting the mower. A damaged wire, loose connector or accidental cross-over can produce a boundary fault that looks like an app or motor problem.
Create a virtual map on a wire-free mower
Pair the mower before mapping
Install the manufacturer’s current app, create or sign in to the required account, and follow the model-specific pairing flow. On Husqvarna’s iQ instructions, pairing uses Bluetooth after the charging and reference stations are set up where applicable and the mower is placed in its charger. Keep the phone near the mower until pairing and any firmware process completes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose the mapping mode your model offers
Segway Navimow says its app provides guided-walk mapping or autonomous mapping on i-Series models, while its manual page lists separate instructions for each model series. A guided walk generally has you trace the intended edge with the phone; an autonomous mode lets the mower perform the mapping run. The labels, available modes and editing tools depend on the exact model and app version.
Keep the first run representative
Map the lawn in its normal condition, with temporary objects removed and gates or passages configured as they will be during mowing. Walk or drive the complete intended area rather than stopping at the first open patch. Include islands, remote sections and narrow connections only when the mower’s documentation says they are supported.
Understand AIM’s longer map-building period
Supported Husqvarna Automower AIM models do not necessarily finish their virtual map in one perimeter drive. Husqvarna says the map typically takes one to two weeks, depending on lawn size and mowing schedule, and recommends allowing as much operation as practical during this period. The AIM map can show the wires, charging station and mower location. This estimate applies to AIM; it should not be presented as a requirement for every virtual-boundary mower.

Define work areas and stay-out zones
For AIM work areas, Husqvarna recommends including reference points such as trees, islands and long wire sections. It says to place mapped work-area borders at least 1.5 metres (5 feet) outside the lawn so the mower cuts to the boundary wire, and says adjacent work areas should overlap. Those instructions are AIM-specific. Use your model’s own rule for edge offsets, overlap and exclusion zones.

Run the first verification test
Do not rely on a schedule until you have watched the mower operate and return to its dock.
- Start with a charged mower and an unobstructed station approach.
- Confirm that the app shows the intended boundary, work area or wire status.
- Observe the mower leaving the station and reaching each reachable section.
- Check islands, stay-out zones, slopes and passages from both directions where possible.
- Trigger or wait for a return-to-dock cycle and watch the complete approach, alignment and charging connection.
- Stop the mower and correct the map, wire, station or obstacle before enabling a recurring schedule.
For a wired Automower installation, Husqvarna specifically calls for guide-wire calibration and verification that the mower follows the wire and docks. For any system, inspect the map at the real lawn edge: a boundary that is visually correct in the app may still leave an inaccessible strip or include a flower bed.
Where should the charging station go?
- Use the flat, level surface and clearances stated for your model.
- Provide the required sky view for satellite positioning or a reference antenna.
- Keep the station within the permitted distance of power and route the cable as the manual requires.
- Leave a straight, unobstructed reverse and approach path.
- Do not place it where runoff, irrigation, snow storage or routine foot traffic can block the dock.
- After installation, test both departure and return before fixing the final schedule.
The 30-foot outlet distance and 6-foot reverse clearance cited earlier are Husqvarna iQ US instructions only. They are not generic station-placement rules.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do robot mowers need boundary wire?
Only models designed to use a physical boundary need boundary wire. Wired systems depend on the installed loop, and supported systems may also require a guide wire. Wire-free models define their perimeter in the app through satellite/GNSS or another navigation method. Hybrid models can use wire in difficult signal areas. Check the exact model before buying an installation kit: a compatible wired mower may need wire, connectors, couplers and stakes, while a wire-free mower may need none of them.
Common setup failures and the right correction
The mower reports a boundary or loop fault
Switch the mower off according to its manual, then inspect the complete loop for a cut, loose connector, crushed section or accidental crossing. Test or repair it with the specified connector and wire. Do not substitute an unapproved cable simply because it looks similar.

The mower cannot find the dock
Check the guide-wire route, station alignment, open approach and calibration. On the cited Automower setup, confirm the straight section ahead of the station, the minimum guide-to-boundary separation and the absence of angles over 45 degrees. A station moved by even a small amount may require recalibration or a map update.
A passage is skipped
Measure the passage at its narrowest point and compare it with the model’s documented width. Inspect for a guide wire that is too close to the boundary, a map line that pinches the corridor, or an obstacle that was absent during mapping. If the area is a separate zone rather than a true passage, configure it as the model’s secondary area instead.
The satellite map drifts or refuses to complete
Check the station and reference antenna’s sky view, correction-service coverage and app status. Confirm that the model and region support the selected satellite service. Heavy shade can be significant; Husqvarna says supported iQ systems may add wire in heavily shaded areas. Re-map only after correcting the physical or coverage issue.
The mower cuts outside the intended lawn
Stop it, compare the digital boundary or physical wire with the actual edge, and add or edit the stay-out area according to the manual. For AIM, review the work-area offset guidance rather than moving a boundary blindly. Do not assume every app uses the same edge compensation.
The app cannot pair
Use the current app version named by the manufacturer, enable Bluetooth and the permissions it requests, place the mower in its charger if required, and repeat the model-specific pairing sequence. Firmware, account and regional requirements can change; the current operator manual and app help are authoritative.
What to buy, and what not to assume you need
A physical boundary-wire installation may require a model-compatible installation kit containing wire, connectors, couplers and stakes. Search terms such as robot lawn mower boundary wire installation kit describe the category, not a guarantee of compatibility. Match the kit to the mower’s model and installation instructions before purchasing.
Replacement blades are listed as optional accessories for Husqvarna’s iQ series, but blades are not a setup requirement. Wire-free owners generally do not need a boundary-wire kit unless their specific hybrid system supports and calls for one.
Final pre-schedule checklist
- Exact model, region and current operator manual confirmed.
- Navigation type identified as wired, satellite/virtual or hybrid.
- Lawn sketch includes islands, passages, slopes, remote sections and stay-out areas.
- Charging station is level, powered, reachable and positioned according to its manual.
- Reference station or antenna is installed where required and coverage is confirmed.
- Boundary and guide wires are connected, secured, calibrated and tested where applicable.
- App pairing and firmware steps are complete.
- Virtual map or work areas match the physical lawn; temporary obstacles are removed.
- A complete return-to-dock has been observed before an automatic schedule is enabled.
Setup instructions, app labels, satellite services, dimensions and safety requirements can change with model, firmware, region and date. Re-open the exact current manual whenever you move the station, alter a wire, add a zone or rebuild the map.
