What a custom CS2 Retakes server actually is
Retakes starts players in a post-plant situation, with defenders attempting to retake a bombsite and attackers holding it. A community server adds that ruleset to a dedicated CS2 installation and lets the operator control configuration, maps, access and administration.

The supported stack has three essential layers:
- CS2 dedicated server: the Steam-based server files and process that hosts the match.
- Metamod:Source: the server-side plugin loader.
- CounterStrikeSharp: the framework that runs modern CS2 plugins.
- RetakesPlugin: B3none’s plugin that supplies the Retakes rules and configuration.
RetakesPlugin is not a replacement for the dedicated server or its plugin frameworks. Install the layers in that order, and treat the plugin’s first launch as part of installation: its configuration file is generated only after the server starts.
Official Retakes matchmaking versus your own server
You do not need to host anything to play Valve’s official mode. In an October 23, 2025 Counter-Strike 2 update, Valve announced “Adding Retakes as official game mode supporting Defusal Group Alpha and Defusal Group Delta maps on official matchmaking servers.” Valve’s announcement describes that matchmaking option.

Choose the community route when the important requirement is a server that you or your group can administer. Choose official matchmaking when operating files, updates and networking would add more work than value.
Decide where the server will run
The same plugin stack can run on your own machine, in a container or through a managed host. The technical files are similar, but the maintenance responsibility changes.

The OpenCS2 container documentation is available at https://github.com/opencs2/cs2-retake-server. A managed-host installation example is documented at https://gamezservers.com/guides/how-to-set-up-a-cs2-retakes-server. Neither source publishes a reliable, universal hardware benchmark, minimum RAM figure, bandwidth number or maximum player capacity, so plan from your host’s documented limits and observe the server under your actual workload.
Prepare the dedicated server
Before touching the Retakes plugin, obtain a working CS2 dedicated-server installation. The exact Steam or hosting-panel procedure depends on your operating system and deployment choice, but the result must be the server’s game directory with permission to add an addons directory and restart the process.
- Use storage that persists across restarts, container recreation or panel redeployments.
- Keep a separate copy of configuration and plugin files before making changes.
- Make sure you can start and stop the server and read its console or log output.
- For a private server, decide who should be allowed to connect before you publish its address.
- For a public server, plan update windows and a method for restoring a known-good configuration.
Do not begin by copying RetakesPlugin into an arbitrary folder. Its location is interpreted relative to CounterStrikeSharp, and a misplaced archive can look like a broken plugin when the real problem is the path.

Install Metamod:Source and CounterStrikeSharp
Install Metamod:Source first, followed by CounterStrikeSharp, using releases compatible with the current CS2 dedicated-server build. These are prerequisites for RetakesPlugin, not optional enhancements. After each installation, start the server far enough to confirm that the framework loads, then stop it before adding the next layer. This isolates framework errors from plugin errors.

Your installation should expose a CounterStrikeSharp directory under the server’s game files. On a conventional file installation, the RetakesPlugin archive is placed below addons/counterstrikesharp/. A managed panel may display the same location with a game/csgo/ prefix; follow the panel’s game-root convention rather than creating a second, parallel addons directory.
Install B3none’s RetakesPlugin
B3none’s repository is the authoritative location for the plugin release and its installation notes: https://github.com/B3none/cs2-retakes.
Choose the correct archive
The recommended release archive includes preconfigured map spawns. It is the quickest route when you intend to use the standard maps covered by that release. B3none also provides a no-map-configs archive for operators who will define their own map setup. Do not combine both archives indiscriminately; select the one that matches whether you want supplied spawns or a custom spawn configuration.
Copy the files
- Download the desired RetakesPlugin release from the repository’s releases or installation area.
- Extract it locally so you can see the directory structure before uploading.
- Upload the extracted plugin content into the server’s
addons/counterstrikesharp/directory. In a managed panel, the equivalent path shown by the setup guide isgame/csgo/addons/counterstrikesharp/. - Preserve the archive’s folders and filenames. Do not flatten every file into one directory or rename the plugin folder.
- Start the server and wait for the normal startup sequence to finish. The first launch is expected to create the plugin configuration.
Immediately after copying the files, it is normal not to see a configuration file. RetakesPlugin generates it during startup at addons/counterstrikesharp/configs/plugins/RetakesPlugin/config.json.

Generate and edit config.json
Once the server has started, stop it cleanly before editing the generated file. Open addons/counterstrikesharp/configs/plugins/RetakesPlugin/config.json in a text editor that preserves JSON syntax.
Set the match rules you actually want
The generated configuration exposes the plugin’s supported settings. Review the entries and comments supplied with the release rather than copying keys from an unrelated version. Configure the categories B3none identifies for the plugin, including:
- Which teams participate and how players are assigned.
- Round behavior, resets and the conditions that move a Retakes round forward.
- Weapon selections and any restrictions for the round’s loadouts.
- Other server rules exposed by the installed plugin version.
- Map and spawn behavior, particularly if you selected the no-map-configs archive.
Keep valid JSON punctuation: quoted property names, commas between entries and matching braces. Make one logical change at a time while you are learning the configuration so a startup error can be tied to a specific edit.
Handle map spawns
With the release that includes map configs, supplied spawn data is the easiest starting point for supported standard maps. If you chose the no-map-configs archive, provide the map spawn data required by your custom setup before expecting a complete round. A plugin can load successfully while a map lacks usable Retakes spawns, so treat “plugin loaded” and “players spawn correctly” as separate checks.

- Save the file without changing its filename or extension.
- Restart the dedicated server so CounterStrikeSharp reloads the plugin and configuration.
- Read the console and plugin logs for JSON parse errors, missing files or a failed RetakesPlugin load.
- Connect with a test account, start a round and verify team assignment, weapons, bombsite flow and spawns.
- Stop and correct one issue at a time if the test does not match your configuration.
Optional companion plugins
B3none lists companion plugins such as instant defuse, clutch announcements and instant plant as recommendations. They are not prerequisites for RetakesPlugin. Add one only when it solves a rule or presentation need you have identified.

- Install optional plugins after the core stack works.
- Confirm that each companion supports your installed CounterStrikeSharp and CS2 versions.
- Back up the working configuration before adding it.
- Restart and check logs after each addition, so a new failure is attributable to the latest change.
Extra plugins increase the number of files and compatibility relationships you must maintain. A minimal server with only the core stack is easier to troubleshoot and update.
Run the server in Docker
Docker is useful when you want a repeatable deployment, but it does not remove the need to understand the plugin’s files. Use the OpenCS2 image documentation for its current image name, mounts and startup variables: https://github.com/opencs2/cs2-retake-server.
- Create persistent storage for the CS2 server data, including
addons, CounterStrikeSharp configuration and logs. - Deploy the image according to its documentation and mount that storage at the path the image expects.
- Start the container once, allow the server and RetakesPlugin to generate
config.json, then stop it before editing. - Copy the plugin release into the mounted CounterStrikeSharp directory and configure it as you would on a file-based server.
- Use the documented
STEAMAPPVALIDATEenvironment variable when you need the image to validate and redownload server files after customizations. Review what files are replaced before enabling validation, and keep plugin and configuration backups outside the container. - Restart the container, inspect logs and perform an in-game test.
Container replacement must not erase your generated configuration. If a fresh container starts with default files, your storage mount is not covering the server data that needs to persist.

A managed host can shorten the repetitive work of keeping a process online, but you still need to install the plugin frameworks and verify the Retakes configuration. The setup guide at https://gamezservers.com/guides/how-to-set-up-a-cs2-retakes-server describes this sequence:
- Provision a CS2 server and open its file manager or FTP access.
- Install Metamod:Source and CounterStrikeSharp in the host’s supported game directory.
- Upload B3none’s RetakesPlugin into
game/csgo/addons/counterstrikesharp/, preserving the archive structure. - Restart from the panel.
- After startup, locate the generated configuration under the host’s equivalent of
addons/counterstrikesharp/configs/plugins/RetakesPlugin/config.json. - Edit, save, restart and check the panel console or downloadable logs.
Panel paths can differ from a local installation even when the underlying plugin path is conceptually the same. Ask the host which directory is the CS2 game root if the plugin does not appear to load.
Make a private server for friends
RetakesPlugin can be used for a private group, but “private” is an access and networking decision rather than a separate plugin edition. Keep the server address out of public listings, use the access controls provided by your server setup, and give friends the connection details only after the server passes your test.
- Choose a host location close to most players to reduce geographic latency.
- Confirm that your machine, container host or provider allows the game traffic required by the CS2 server.
- Use a password or the host’s supported allow-list mechanism if available, and protect administrative credentials.
- Test with at least one friend from outside the server’s local network; a local-only test can hide firewall or routing problems.
- Remove access when a session ends if the server is not intended to remain available.
The supplied documentation does not establish a universal port number, firewall recipe or capacity limit. Use the current CS2 dedicated-server and hosting instructions for those deployment-specific values instead of copying a port rule from an unrelated game or old CS2 guide.

Use this checklist after the first configuration and after significant updates:
- The server starts without a CounterStrikeSharp or RetakesPlugin load error.
config.jsonexists at the expected RetakesPlugin path.- The selected map has usable Retakes spawns; custom maps have the spawn data you supplied.
- Players are placed on the intended teams.
- Round behavior matches the configured rules.
- Weapon selections match the configuration.
- A bombsite round can start, progress and finish without a stuck state.
- Logs remain clean after a restart and a complete test round.
Capture a backup at this point. It gives you a known-good configuration to restore after a plugin update or an experiment with optional companions.
Troubleshooting common failures

Updates, backups and security
A Retakes server is a small software stack, not a one-time upload. CS2 updates can change the dedicated server, while Metamod:Source, CounterStrikeSharp and RetakesPlugin each have their own release cadence. Before updating:
- Record the currently working versions and copy
config.json, map data and any customized plugin files. - Stop the server cleanly.
- Update one layer at a time, starting with the dedicated server and then checking framework compatibility.
- Start the server and inspect logs before adding optional plugins or changing rules.
- Run a complete Retakes test round and keep the backup until the result is confirmed.
Limit write access to the server files, protect panel and remote-console credentials, and avoid uploading unverified plugin archives. For a public server, monitor restarts and keep a rollback copy; an automatically validated or redownloaded server can replace customized files if you have not separated those customizations from the files it manages.

Which setup should you choose?
- Choose self-hosting if you need maximum control and are comfortable maintaining Steam files, plugin dependencies, networking, backups and uptime.
- Choose Docker if repeatable deployment and persistent mounts fit your workflow, and you want image-level validation without giving up access to the plugin files.
- Choose managed hosting if you prefer a control panel and provider-managed availability, while accepting less control and a provider-specific path and policy.
- Choose official matchmaking if your goal is simply to play Retakes and you do not need custom administration.
For a custom server, the reliable sequence is consistent: prepare CS2, install Metamod:Source and CounterStrikeSharp, add B3none’s RetakesPlugin, launch once to generate config.json, configure rules and spawns, restart, and validate the first live round through the logs and in-game behavior.
