Steam launches the game, but there is no single universal Steam wheel-configuration screen: compatibility, labels, and controls vary by wheel and title.
Before you start: check the wheel and game
Confirm that the wheel supports your computer and the game you want to play. A game’s controller support does not guarantee support for every racing wheel; Steam notes that controller support depends on the individual game (Steam controller support). Check the wheel manufacturer’s PC setup instructions, including any platform-mode switch, power adapter, driver, or companion app required for your model.

Also identify the inputs you intend to use. A game may treat the wheel, throttle, brake, clutch, shifter, and extra buttons as separate controls, and it may not expose every input your hardware has.
Connect the wheel and confirm the computer sees it
- Connect and power it as the manufacturer specifies. Connect USB and any separate power supply, select the PC mode if the wheel has a mode switch, and allow any startup calibration to finish. Logitech’s Pro Racing Wheel manual describes a brief calibration on power-up and directs PC users to install Logitech G HUB (Logitech Pro Racing Wheel setup).
- Check inputs outside the game. Open the wheel maker’s software and, where applicable, your operating system’s controller input panel. Move the wheel and press each pedal to see whether the inputs register. Logitech’s troubleshooting guidance for the G923, G29, and G920 recommends checking G HUB and the Windows controller module (Logitech wheel troubleshooting).
If the wheel does not power on, calibrate, or register in those checks, troubleshoot its USB and power connections, mode, driver, and manufacturer software before changing game settings. Logitech’s troubleshooting page also notes that a Steam detection step shown in an older troubleshooting video is no longer applicable; do not rely on Steam to verify basic hardware recognition.

Bind the wheel and pedals in the game
Start the game from Steam, then open that game’s controls, input, or wheel settings. The exact menu name depends on the title. Assign steering, throttle, brake, clutch, shifter, and buttons individually where the game provides those options. Follow the game’s prompts: some titles ask you to move or press an input while binding it. Logitech’s manual cautions that some titles require you to configure the wheel in the game’s control settings before it will work (Logitech Pro Racing Wheel setup).
After binding, test the inputs in the game’s control screen or a practice session. If steering or pedal behavior is wrong, check the game’s axis assignments and calibration options, if available, before changing unrelated Steam settings. The game’s support for your particular wheel and the exact options it exposes are title-specific.

Adjust wheel behavior in manufacturer software
Use the wheel maker’s app for hardware-specific settings when available, then check how the game handles those settings. For example, Logitech documents sensitivity controls and a global operating range for the G29 and G920 in its software instructions (Logitech G29/G920 settings).
The Tool Desk

- Sensitivity: Logitech identifies 50% as the default steering and pedal sensitivity value in those instructions.
These figures apply to the documented G29/G920 controls, not to every wheel. Other models may use different software, names, ranges, or defaults. If a change makes steering feel less predictable, return to the model’s default and adjust one setting at a time.

When to use Steam Input—and when not to
Do not assume Steam Input is the layer that must configure a racing wheel. A game may read the wheel’s native steering and pedal axes directly, while Steam Input configurations are per game and depend on the input styles the title supports. Steam’s guidance explains Steam Input configuration and notes that a configuration can fail when a game does not support the selected input style (Steamworks: getting started with Steam Input; Steam Controller troubleshooting). These pages describe Steam Input and controller behavior; they are not universal racing-wheel binding instructions.
If a Steam Input mapping causes unexpected behavior, review that game’s per-game configuration and the game’s own input support. If the wheel works outside the game but not in it, start with the title’s wheel compatibility and in-game bindings rather than changing mappings blindly.

If you are playing through Steam Link
Steam Link is a separate case from running a game locally on the PC. Steam Support says racing wheels, fight sticks, and flight sticks are not natively supported on Steam Link, and identifies VirtualHere as a way to enable them (Steam Link device support). That limitation does not mean wheels are unsupported in locally run Steam games.

Troubleshoot by where the input stops working
- No power or startup calibration: Recheck the manufacturer’s power and connection instructions before adjusting software settings.
- Wheel or pedals absent from the manufacturer app or operating-system input panel: Check USB and power, PC mode, drivers, and the manufacturer utility. For Logitech G923/G29/G920, Logitech specifically recommends G HUB and the Windows controller module.
- Inputs register outside the game but not in it: Check the game’s wheel compatibility, control menu, and axis or button bindings. Some titles require in-game configuration.
- Works locally but not over Steam Link: Account for Steam Link’s stated wheel limitation and its VirtualHere workaround.
- Steam Input causes unexpected mappings: Check whether the game supports the selected input style and review its per-game Steam Input configuration; do not assume Steam Input is required for native wheel axes.
For exact menu steps, the relevant details are the wheel model, operating system, game title, and whether you launch locally or through Steam Link. Without those, menu names and compatibility cannot be stated reliably.
