How to Set Up a PvE Server in 7 Days to Die: A Complete 7-Day Guide

A practical seven-day plan for building a private or public 7 Days to Die PvE server, from SteamCMD installation and custom configuration to networking, permissions, backups, and recovery.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reliable PvE server in 7 Days to Die requires more than launching a multiplayer game. Install the separate dedicated-server application (Steam app 294420), keep your settings in a copied configuration file, define clear anti-griefing rules, open the correct network ports, and automate backups, updates, and restarts. The seven-day plan below takes you from an empty Windows or Linux machine to a tested private or public PvE server.

What a dedicated PvE server does

A dedicated server is a standalone process. It runs the world even when the person who configured it is not playing, so friends can connect independently of a host player’s game session. The server software is a separate Steam download, app 294420; it is not the ordinary game client. You can run it on a computer you control or pay a hosting provider to operate the machine, network, and maintenance for you.

PvE is mainly an administrative and community arrangement rather than a single switch. The game still needs a configured world, player limit, password or access policy, and permissions. Your rules should make it clear that players cooperate against the environment and may not damage bases, steal items, harass other players, or exploit administrator powers.

Choose self-hosting or managed hosting on day one

Decide where the server will run before installing anything. Self-hosting provides direct control over configuration files, mods, software branches, logs, and administrative access. It also makes you responsible for operating-system updates, firewall and router rules, backups, power, connectivity, and recovery when the process stops. Managed hosting shifts most of that operational work to a provider and usually offers a control panel, automatic restarts, and support, but it adds a recurring fee and can limit unusual configurations or branch choices.

#1 Best Overall
Haxtec Metal DND Dice Set, 7 Pcs Antique Polyhedral Dice for Table Games
  • Premium PU Leather Dice Bag Included Each Haxtec metal dice set comes with a high-quality, durable PU leather dice bag with quick open and close drawstring design for easy dice storage and carrying
  • Solid Zinc Alloy Heavy Metal Dice Each die is cast from solid zinc alloy for a satisfying heft that plastic dice can’t match – built to last for years of tabletop gaming without chipping or fading
  • Easy to Read with Smooth Rounded Edges Numbers are deeply engraved with high contrast for quick reading at a glance, and every edge is smoothly rounded with no sharp points for comfortable rolling
  • Why Some Dice Are Slightly Smaller (Smart Weight Management) D4, D6, D8 are intentionally sized at 14-16mm – this keeps the total dice set weight comfortable (105g, 3.7oz) while still being fully readable; full-size metal dice would be 150-180g (5.3-6.3oz), which many players find too heavy for long sessions
  • Classic Antique Bronze Vibe & Perfect DND Gift Electroplated and deliberately worn for an ancient, battle-worn bronze tone that never goes out of style – an ideal D&D gift for players, dice goblins, and TTRPG collectors, perfect for rogue, warlock, or barbarian characters
Decision factor Computer you control Managed server
Administrative effort You handle the operating system, firewall, NAT, updates, logs, backups, and restart policies. The provider generally supplies the operating system, panel, network setup, and automated service controls; verify exactly what is included.
Control Maximum control over custom configuration, mods, server branch, files, and admin access. Convenient controls, but available settings, mods, and branch pinning depend on the provider.
Cost model Uses existing hardware but consumes electricity and your internet connection. Uses a recurring hosting charge instead of your own hardware and bandwidth.
Reliability Depends on your power, internet connection, monitoring, and recovery scripts. Often includes datacenter uptime and automatic restarts; read the service’s actual terms.
Connectivity You must make the server publicly reachable and account for latency, carrier-grade NAT, or cloud security rules. The provider normally supplies a public address, but you still need to check latency, region, and console crossplay support.

Estimate the number of simultaneous players, the intended world size, likely mod use, and whether console crossplay is required. CPU performance matters for this game, but there is no universal hardware minimum that applies to every world, player count, and mod set. Start with a machine that has headroom rather than planning around the smallest possible specification.

Day 1: define the PvE scope and access policy

Decide who can join

For a private friend group, use a strong server password and distribute it through a trusted channel. A whitelist is preferable when your installed version or hosting panel supports one, because it lets you approve individual SteamIDs instead of sharing a secret. For a public community, publish the rules and decide how you will handle reports, bans, restarts, and disputed loot before opening the server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Write the rules before launch

  • No player-versus-player damage, base destruction, theft, or deliberate obstruction of another player’s progression.
  • No duplication, map-seed abuse, unauthorized admin commands, or exploits that damage the shared world.
  • Explain whether shared community buildings, trader areas, roads, and event zones have special rules.
  • State how warnings, temporary bans, permanent bans, and appeals work.
  • Tell players when maintenance restarts and updates normally occur.

Plan administration

Give administrator rights only to trusted people. Record each administrator’s SteamID and the commands they are permitted to use. Keep a second, non-admin account for routine testing; if that account can perform an administrative action, your permissions are broader than intended.

Day 2: install the dedicated-server application

Install SteamCMD on the Windows or Linux host and keep the server in its own directory, separate from any game-client installation. Run the service under a restricted account where practical, so a mistake in a server-side process does not automatically grant full operating-system access.

Install with SteamCMD

Open a terminal or command prompt in the SteamCMD directory and use the standard anonymous update sequence. Replace the installation path with a directory that exists on your host.

steamcmd +force_install_dir /path/to/7dtd-server +login anonymous +app_update 294420 validate +quit

On Windows, use a Windows path and the SteamCMD executable available on your machine. On Linux, use a writable directory owned by the service account. The important value is app 294420, which identifies the dedicated server rather than the retail client.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm the files

After the update completes, verify that the directory contains the dedicated-server executable, the shipped serverconfig.xml, the save location, and the support files supplied by the current build. Do not move individual files into a game-client directory; updates and permissions are easier to reason about when the server has one clear root directory.

Haxtec Metal DND Dice Set, 7 Pcs Blue Polyhedral Dice for Table Games
  • Complete 7-Piece Copper Blue Enamel Dice Set Includes D20, D12, D10, D%, D8, D6, D4 – each die features hand-enameled blue coating with bright electroplated copper edges for a stunning, high-end look that resists wear and keeps its shine for years
  • Premium PU Leather Dice Bag Included Each set comes with a high-quality, durable PU leather dice bag with quick open and close drawstring design for easy dice storage and carrying
  • Easy to Read with Smooth Rounded Edges Numbers are deeply engraved with high contrast for quick reading at a glance, and every edge is smoothly rounded for comfortable rolling
  • Solid Zinc Alloy & Smart Size Management Each die is cast from solid zinc alloy for a satisfying heft. D4, D6, D8 are intentionally sized at 14-16mm to keep total weight comfortable (105g, 3.7oz) while fully readable; full-size metal dice would be 150-180g (5.3-6.3oz), which many players find too heavy
  • Perfect DND Gift for Players & Collectors The regal copper and blue enamel combination is ideal for wizards, druids, or rogues – a great D&D gift for dice goblins, DND lovers, and TTRPG players

Day 3: create a durable configuration

Never edit the shipped serverconfig.xml directly. Copy it to a custom name such as myserver.xml, keep the copy with your backups, and launch the server with that filename. An update can replace the shipped file; your custom file protects your settings and makes rollback possible.

cp serverconfig.xml myserver.xml

The copy command above is for Linux and similar shells. In Windows Explorer, use Copy and Paste, then rename the copy. The method does not matter; preserving an original and editing a separate file does.

Change values, not the XML structure

Use the property values already present in the file. Do not delete elements, rename property nodes, or paste an old guide’s structure into a newer file. The installed version’s generated configuration is the authority.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Set the basic server identity

  • Server name: Use a recognizable name that identifies the PvE rules or community.
  • Description: Include the play style, timezone or maintenance window, and where players can read the rules.
  • Password: Set one for a private group; use a carefully managed access process for a public server.
  • Player slots: Choose a limit your CPU, memory, bandwidth, and moderation capacity can sustain.
  • World, seed, and save location: Select a new world or an existing save deliberately, and record the exact location for backups.
  • Network and administration properties: Match the configured ports, visibility, and permission files to your launch plan.

Current V3-era settings require special care. XP, loot, difficulty, and blood-moon controls may be encoded in SandboxCode rather than exposed as the standalone XML properties shown in older tutorials. Generate or inspect the configuration from the build you actually installed, then change the fields that build provides. A procedural guide written for V3.1 has not necessarily been rechecked against V3.2, while settings references aimed at V3.2.0 may use different names or encoding. Treat older examples as background, not as copy-and-paste authority.

Launch with the custom file

Use a headless launch command that explicitly selects your copy and starts dedicated mode.

7DaysToDieServer.exe -configfile=myserver.xml -dedicated

On Linux, use the executable supplied by the installation, commonly named with an .x86_64 suffix:

./7DaysToDieServer.x86_64 -configfile=myserver.xml -dedicated

If the process starts with the wrong world or default settings, check the working directory, the spelling and case of the filename, and the path passed to -configfile. Keep the launch command in a script so every restart uses the same configuration.

Day 4: make PvE administration enforceable

Configure permissions safely

Store administrator permissions in serveradmin.xml and limit entries to trusted SteamIDs. Document who can use console commands and what each level permits. Never publish the administrator password or leave a shared account with unrestricted powers. Test permission changes with a non-admin client after every edit.

Separate game settings from community policy

Difficulty, loot, XP, blood-moon behavior, and similar values affect the experience, but they do not replace a no-griefing policy. A player can obey a server’s difficulty settings while still stealing from a base or abusing a command. Put the rules in the server description, welcome message, community channel, or an in-game notice where every player can find them.

Use a private access method

For a small group, combine a password with a short list of approved players. Change the password when someone leaves the group. If you use a whitelist, remove former members promptly and keep a record of who approved each SteamID. Do not rely on an unpublished address as security; addresses can be discovered or shared.

Day 5: open the network and make the first connection

Understand the port range

A community checklist cites 26900–26902 as the default range, but panels, server versions, and hosting environments can allocate ports differently. Use the values in your installed configuration or control panel rather than assuming the defaults. Every layer must agree: the server setting, the operating-system firewall, the router or NAT rule, and any cloud security group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Configure the host firewall

  1. Identify the game-server ports configured in myserver.xml or your hosting panel.
  2. Create firewall rules that allow the required game traffic to those ports.
  3. Allow the dedicated-server executable to accept connections if your operating system prompts for application access.
  4. Keep remote-administration or file-transfer ports separate and restricted; do not expose them just because the game port is public.

The exact firewall screens differ between Windows and Linux distributions. The principle is the same: permit only the configured game ports and the administration services you genuinely use.

Configure the router or cloud security group

On a home connection, forward each configured game port from the router’s public interface to the host’s fixed local address. Reserve the host’s local address so the rule does not point to a different machine after a lease change. In a cloud environment, create equivalent inbound rules in the provider’s security group and confirm that the operating-system firewall also permits them.

Test from outside the host network

Have a player connect through the in-game server browser or by direct address. Testing from another device on the same home network can succeed even when internet NAT is wrong, so ask someone on a different connection to test. Confirm the password, world name, player limit, and non-admin permissions. Watch the server log while the client joins; authentication, port, permission, and world-loading errors usually appear there before the client explains them clearly.

  • Complete 7-Piece Silver Red Enamel Dice Set Includes D20, D12, D10, D%, D8, D6, D4 – each die features hand-enameled red coating with bright electroplated silver edges for a stunning, high-end look that resists wear and keeps its shine for years

  • Perfect DND Gift for Players & Collectors The bold silver and red enamel combination is ideal for barbarians, fighters, or rogues – a great D&D gift for dice goblins, DND lovers, and TTRPG players

Day 6: protect persistence, mods, and recovery

Back up the complete world

Back up the entire Saves directory, not just a single visible world file. Include myserver.xml, serveradmin.xml, any whitelist or ban files, launch scripts, and a note identifying the installed server branch. Stop the server or use a backup method that guarantees files are not being written while copied. Keep at least one backup away from the server machine.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test restoration

  1. Stop the server cleanly.
  2. Copy the current configuration and save directories to a temporary recovery location.
  3. Restore a backup into a separate test directory.
  4. Launch the test instance with its own configuration and port values.
  5. Join as a non-admin and confirm the world, player inventories, permissions, and rules are intact.

A backup that has never been restored is only an assumption. Record the date of the most recent successful restore and repeat the test after major updates.

Add mods cautiously

Install server-side mods only after confirming that their versions match the server branch and that clients can use them. Add one change at a time, restart, and inspect the log before adding another. Keep a written list of mod filenames and versions so you can remove the last change when a world stops loading. Do not assume a mod built for an older game version remains compatible with a V3 update.

Automate restarts and updates

Use a wrapper script, a systemd service, or a hosting-panel restart policy so an unexpected process exit does not leave the world offline. Configure a limited restart loop rather than an immediate infinite cycle that hides a broken configuration. Schedule SteamCMD updates during a declared maintenance window, announce the restart, take a backup first, and verify the server after the update.

Day 7: perform the handoff checklist

Before inviting the full group, complete every check below:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • A non-admin account can join using the published address and port.
  • The password or whitelist admits intended players and rejects an unapproved test account.
  • The PvE rules are visible, understandable, and linked to a moderation process.
  • Administrator permissions work only for the SteamIDs you approved.
  • The world saves, shuts down, and starts again without losing progress.
  • A backup restores successfully in a separate test directory.
  • The restart wrapper or service recovers from an intentional process stop.
  • The installed branch, configuration backup date, mod list, and maintenance window are recorded.
  • Join instructions state the address, port, password policy, game version or branch, and where to report problems.

Keep this handoff record with the server files. It reduces guesswork when another administrator takes over or an update changes a setting.

Why settings can stop working after an update

The shipped file was replaced

If you edited the original serverconfig.xml, an update may have restored it. Compare your custom file with the newly shipped file and move only the intended property values into the new version. From now on, launch with a copied filename and back it up.

An old property no longer controls the feature

V3 builds may encode XP, loot, difficulty, and blood-moon values in SandboxCode. An older standalone property can remain in a guide while the current server ignores it. Inspect the generated file from the installed build and change the current field rather than adding obsolete XML.

The launch script points somewhere else

After an update or directory move, a script can start the server from a different working directory and silently load another configuration. Print or log the working directory, use an absolute path where practical, and confirm the startup output identifies the expected world and configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The branch and mods are mismatched

A server update can make a previously working mod incompatible. Return to the last known-good mod set, test the unmodified server, then add mods one at a time. If your operational plan requires a fixed branch, record that choice and verify that your hosting method supports branch pinning.

Troubleshooting launch and connection failures

The process closes immediately on Windows

Read the console and server log before changing files. A current setup guide identifies missing Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables from 2022 onward as one possible cause of confusing Windows launch failures. Treat that as a troubleshooting lead, not proof that every host needs a manual reinstall. Install the runtime only from a trusted Microsoft source, reboot if requested, and test again. Also verify that the executable architecture, permissions, working directory, and configuration path match the installed server.

The server runs locally but friends cannot join

  • Confirm the server is listening on the configured ports.
  • Check both the operating-system firewall and router or cloud security rules.
  • Verify that forwarding targets the host’s current local address.
  • Check for carrier-grade NAT or an internet service that blocks inbound connections.
  • Ask a player on a different network to test; a local test is not proof of public reachability.

Players see the wrong world or default settings

Inspect the exact -configfile argument, the current working directory, and the save path. Make sure the server process is not being launched by a panel, service, or wrapper with a second configuration file. Compare timestamps on the expected save directory and the directory actually changing while a player is online.

Players are unexpectedly administrators

Review serveradmin.xml and any panel-level permission list. Remove duplicate or obsolete SteamIDs, restart the server, and test with a fresh non-admin account. Keep the permission file in the same backup routine as the world.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Operating the server after launch

Use a predictable maintenance cycle

Choose a weekly or otherwise dependable window for backups, updates, and restarts. Announce the time in the same place as the rules. Shut down cleanly, copy the world and configuration, update the dedicated-server files with SteamCMD, start the service, and perform a short non-admin connection test before declaring maintenance complete.

Keep an operations log

Record update dates, branch changes, configuration edits, mod additions, backup results, restore tests, incidents, and administrator changes. When a setting stops working, the log lets you correlate the problem with a specific update or file edit instead of guessing.

Review capacity as the community grows

Player slots are not merely a menu number. More simultaneous players, larger bases, extensive automation, and mods increase CPU, memory, storage, and network pressure. Watch server performance and connection reports, then lower the slot limit or move to stronger hosting before instability becomes world corruption.

Final recommendation

For a small group with a reliable always-on computer and someone willing to maintain it, self-hosting offers the most control. For players who do not want to manage operating-system updates, NAT, monitoring, backups, and recovery, managed hosting is the simpler route. Whichever model you choose, the non-negotiable practices are the same: install app 294420 separately from the game client, launch with a durable custom configuration, verify current V3 fields instead of copying obsolete XML, enforce PvE permissions and rules, open only the required ports, and prove that backups and restarts work before inviting everyone.
