For the best picture in a bright living room, first stop direct light from hitting the screen, then choose a screen size and projector position that fit your seats and room. Match projector brightness and screen type to the light you cannot control. More lumens or an ambient light rejecting (ALR) screen can help, but neither can erase light reflected from the screen.
1. Check the room’s light while you plan to watch
Assess the room at the time you expect to use the projector. Note whether daylight is indirect, diffused through several windows, or shining directly onto the screen. Check whether ceiling lights or lamps illuminate the projection surface, too.

When direct sunlight reaches the screen, start with curtains or shades, or adjust the screen location if practical. Light falling on a standard projection screen competes with the projector’s image and reduces contrast, color saturation, and dynamic range. Decide where viewers will sit and how large an image they can comfortably take in before choosing a projector position. Epson UK suggests that a screen cover roughly 30%–50% of the primary viewer’s field of view. Its guide gives 50–100 inches with a viewing distance of 1.5–3 metres as a typical small-room range. 3. Check throw distance before installing
Measure the distance from the projector’s lens to the screen, rather than relying on the room’s total depth. Standard-throw models need more space; short-throw and ultra-short-throw (UST) models can make a large image from closer to the screen. Exact placement depends on the model, image size, and throw specifications, so check its throw calculator or lens table before buying or mounting.
For a ceiling installation, confirm that the projector’s mounting pattern fits the mount and that its lens offset or lens shift can align the picture with the screen. Prefer optical alignment where available rather than relying on digital keystone correction, which can alter the image. 4. Match brightness to the image size and remaining light
Published brightness recommendations are useful for narrowing options, but they are not universal guarantees. Epson UK suggests 2,500–3,500 lumens for living rooms with some ambient light and 3,500+ lumens for bright rooms. XGIMI’s guide, published August 26, 2026, gives approximately 2,000 ISO lumens as a practical starting point for indirect daylight and 3,000+ ISO lumens for multiple windows with diffused light. The figures use different stated measures; ISO and ANSI lumen ratings are not interchangeable. Screen size, gain, projector settings, and the direction and amount of light all affect the result. Epson UK’s guidance and XGIMI’s daytime-viewing guide are vendor recommendations, not independent performance thresholds.
Check both white brightness and color brightness where the manufacturer publishes them. Epson notes that color brightness can differ substantially from white brightness and, in some cases, be as little as one-third of the stated figure. Epson says its own projectors specify white brightness under ISO 21118 and color brightness under IDMS 15.4; do not assume another brand uses the same methods. 5. Choose a screen for the room’s light and projector type
A standard matte screen is a sensible choice when you can control the light reaching it. If daylight or room lighting remains, an ALR screen may reject some light arriving from particular directions while reflecting projector light toward viewers. Its effect depends on screen construction, projector type and position, light direction, gain, and viewer angle; it cannot eliminate ambient light.
Match the screen to the projector: ALR screens for standard or long-throw models are not automatically suitable for UST projection. Check the screen’s specified throw compatibility, gain, and viewing angle, especially if viewers sit spread across the room. Higher gain can make the image brighter near the center while reducing brightness or shifting color for viewers off axis.

Legrand AV / Da-Lite describes contrast-based ALR as blocking up to 80% of ambient light and true-optical ALR as rejecting up to 99% from specific angles.
