To set up a portable NAS, connect a compact NAS to AC power and your router by Ethernet, install compatible drives, configure storage and user permissions, then enable file sharing and separate backup jobs. “Portable” here means movable—not necessarily usable on battery or over Wi-Fi: the two-bay Synology DS223, for example, requires AC power and a wired network connection.
What “portable NAS” means in practice
A small NAS can be compact enough to move between a home and a small office, but that does not make it a travel-ready device. Synology’s DS223 is 165 × 108 × 232.7 mm and weighs 1.28 kg, according to its product page accessed October 4, 2026. It needs AC power and has a wired 1GbE network port; the page does not document battery operation or a travel-rated design. Its package includes an AC adapter, power cord, RJ-45 cable, and quick installation guide. Synology DS223 specifications.

Before choosing a model, decide whether you want a compact appliance that you can relocate while powered down, or a system expected to work on the road. The DS223 fits the first description. Synology’s BeeStation also connects to a router by Ethernet and has no built-in Wi-Fi, so neither example should be treated as a standalone wireless travel drive. Synology BeeStation FAQ.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose the NAS, drives, and storage layout together
Match the enclosure to the amount of storage you need, the level of drive redundancy you want, the clients that will connect, and the network and power available where you plan to use it. A two-bay enclosure offers more layout choices than a single-bay model, but redundancy reduces the capacity available for files.

Example: Synology DS223
The DS223 supports two 3.5-inch SATA hard drives or two 2.5-inch SATA SSDs. Synology lists SHR, Basic, JBOD, RAID 0, and RAID 1 as supported storage modes. These options do not provide identical protection or usable capacity: the raw total of the installed drives is not the same as the space available to store files, and actual usable capacity depends on drive sizes and the selected layout. Check the manufacturer’s capacity guidance and drive compatibility list before buying. Synology DS223 specifications.
The same product page lists a 1GbE RJ-45 port and 17.343 watts of power consumption in access mode. The power figure is a Synology specification, not an independent measurement. A 1GbE connection is the model’s network interface, not a guarantee of a particular file-transfer speed; actual performance depends on the network, drives, workload, and client device.

Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Connect and complete first-run setup
- Install the compatible drives using the NAS manufacturer’s installation instructions. Confirm that the drive models and capacities are supported for your region and current firmware.
- Place the NAS where it can receive power and connect it to your router with Ethernet. For the DS223, use the included AC adapter and RJ-45 cable if suitable; its package lists both.
- Power on the NAS and follow the manufacturer’s current first-run setup instructions to initialize the device, install or update its operating system, and configure storage. Screen names can change between software versions, so use the current vendor guide rather than relying on a fixed menu path.
- Set a strong administrator password and create named accounts for people who need access. Create shared folders and grant each user only the permissions needed for their work.
Enable local file sharing
For ordinary browsing from Windows and Mac computers, enable SMB file services on the NAS. Synology lists SMB among the DS223’s supported protocols, and says clients can include Windows, Mac, and Linux computers, Chromebooks, phones, and web browsers. Available connection methods depend on the client and the services you enable. Synology DS223 specifications.

On a computer or phone connected to the same home or office network, connect to the NAS using the vendor’s instructions for that device and sign in with the account you created. If a shared folder is missing or access is denied, check that SMB is enabled, the user has permission for that folder, and the client can reach the NAS on the local network. Do not give every account administrator access just to make a share visible.

- MODULAR SSD STORAGE FLEXIBILITY: Customize storage by mixing SSDs of different capacities. Unlike traditional RAID, StationPC PocketCloud NAS Dock breaks limits, letting you optimize configurations with compact SSDs to fit your data needs
- DUAL-BACKUP STRATEGY: Use modular design for backup - one SSD in StationPC Portable NAS (on-the-go), the second one in the Dock (home or studio). It protects the secondary SSD from outdoor damage, reducing dual-drive failure (common in RAID)
- THREE FLEXIBLE BACKUP & SYNC MODES: Choose practical modes - Full Backup (mirror all data); Selective Backup (specific files); Auto Transfer (automatic sync). They fit all data management scenarios, from full protection to targeted saving
- SEAMLESS MAGNETIC CONNECTION: Plug-and-play magnetic connection enables instant one-click backup & fast charging. Supports multiple StationPC Portable NAS devices for centralized management & batch backup - great for teams
- INTELLIGENT COOLING SYSTEM: Integrated metal heatsink and intelligent cooling keep SSDs stable during high-speed backups. Prevents overheating, ensures performance & extends SSD lifespan for long-term data storage
Set up backups—and keep RAID in perspective
Drive redundancy is not a backup. RAID or SHR may help keep a storage volume available after certain drive failures, depending on the selected layout, but it does not protect against accidental deletion, ransomware, theft, fire, flood, or multiple drive failures. Synology’s BeeStation FAQ explicitly distinguishes backups from RAID protection. Synology BeeStation FAQ.
Plan at least one additional copy of important files that is separate from the NAS. Synology describes the 3-2-1 approach as three copies of data, on two storage media or devices, with one copy offsite. Its Knowledge Center lists Hyper Backup, Snapshot Replication, USB Copy, and Cloud Sync among its backup approaches. Which features are available depends on the NAS model and configuration. Choose a backup method that fits the job
- NAS backup software: Synology describes Hyper Backup as supporting full or selected-folder backups and multiple destinations. Check the current documentation for supported destinations and model requirements.
- Point-in-time recovery: Snapshot Replication can provide point-in-time snapshots on supported setups. A snapshot is useful for recovering earlier file states, but it remains on the NAS unless copied elsewhere; it should not be your only independent backup.
- USB Copy: This can start when an external device is plugged in, which makes it convenient for a removable backup drive. Synology notes that USB Copy does not back up applications or system configurations and does not provide cross-file deduplication. Synology Knowledge Center: How to back up your Synology NAS.
- Offsite copy: Keep one backup somewhere separate from the NAS—for example, an external drive stored away from the device or a supported remote destination. A removable drive that is unplugged and stored offsite is less likely to be affected by the same local incident as the NAS.
Configure the backup task for the folders and devices that matter, and check that it runs successfully. Before relying on it, restore a sample file to a separate location. A backup that has not been tested may not be usable when needed.

Can you use a NAS while traveling?
The DS223 is a compact, AC-powered Ethernet NAS, not a documented battery-powered travel product. You can move it while it is powered down, but using it at another location means arranging power and a suitable wired network connection. Synology’s BeeStation FAQ likewise says the unit connects to a router by Ethernet and has no built-in Wi-Fi. Synology DS223 specifications; Synology BeeStation FAQ.

Synology’s external-access quick-start material describes using a DDNS hostname for access from outside the local network. That establishes DDNS as an available mechanism, not a complete security setup. Follow the current vendor security guidance for remote access, and do not expose SMB directly to the public internet. Quick Recap
Check the setup before trusting it
- Confirm the NAS sees the intended drives and reports a healthy storage configuration.
- From each intended client, connect to the correct shared folder using the proper user account.
- Verify that users can access what they need and cannot access folders outside their permissions.
- Run the selected backup job and confirm its destination contains the expected files or recovery points.
- Restore a sample file and open it from the recovery location.
