You can run a prerecorded YouTube Live stream without leaving a desktop computer on: use an always-on Ubuntu Droplet on DigitalOcean, run FFmpeg on it to send a video or playlist to YouTube, and supervise the process so it starts again after a reboot or unexpected exit. The Droplet hosts the work; it does not supply the video or guarantee uninterrupted service. This guide covers a self-managed setup and its limits.
How the setup works
The basic path is prepared media on the Droplet → FFmpeg → YouTube Live. You do not need OBS or an intermediate RTMP server for a simple prerecorded loop. DigitalOcean’s tutorial demonstrates FFmpeg publishing a file to an RTMP destination and the -stream_loop -1 option for looping; its example destination is a local Nginx-RTMP server, not YouTube, so use the ingest URL YouTube provides instead. The tutorial is not a validated, unattended 24/7 YouTube deployment.

A nonstop broadcast still depends on the server, network, media, encoder process, and YouTube ingest remaining available. A process supervisor can restart FFmpeg after some failures, but it cannot guarantee that the stream never drops.
Before you start
- A DigitalOcean account and an Ubuntu Droplet in a region appropriate for your operation and audience.
- A prepared video file, or a playlist workflow you have tested with your media. The instructions below show the single-file loop pattern.
- YouTube Live enabled for your channel. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned start.
- The YouTube stream server URL and stream key, available in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room stream settings.
- Enough server capacity and outbound network capacity for your chosen media and encoding method. No guaranteed minimum Droplet size or total 24/7 bandwidth cost is established here; measure the actual workload and check DigitalOcean’s current pricing.
Set up YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Open the stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key. You will need both when configuring FFmpeg.
- Keep the key private. Do not place a real key in a public script or repository, screenshot, or log. Store it in a protected configuration or environment mechanism and restrict access to that configuration.
- When FFmpeg connects, check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health information. For a scheduled stream, the documented workflow has a separate Go Live action; starting the encoder does not necessarily publish the scheduled event by itself.
YouTube’s setup guide says enabling a live stream for the first time may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup guide for the current workflow.

Create the Ubuntu server and install FFmpeg
- Create an Ubuntu Droplet in DigitalOcean. Choose capacity based on a test of your actual file, resolution, frame rate, and whether FFmpeg must encode or can pass through compatible media. The available guidance does not establish a guaranteed server size.
- Connect to the server using SSH, update the operating system using its current Ubuntu package instructions, and install FFmpeg from the appropriate package source for that OS release.
- Copy the media file to the server and verify its path and permissions. Confirm you have enough disk space for the media and logs.
- Keep the stream key outside the command history and source-controlled files. Use a restricted-permission configuration file or a protected service environment, and check that diagnostic logging does not expose credentials.
DigitalOcean’s Ubuntu 22.04 Nginx-RTMP tutorial is useful for understanding the FFmpeg file-source and loop pattern. Its local RTMP destination is not YouTube’s ingest endpoint, so do not copy that destination unchanged.
Send a prerecorded file to YouTube with FFmpeg
Configure FFmpeg to read the media in real time, loop it if needed, and publish to the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. In the general pattern below, replace the bracketed placeholders with your actual values; they are not literal command arguments. Keep the key in protected configuration rather than putting a real credential directly into a command you may save in shell history.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4 [encoding options] -f flv "[YouTube ingest URL]/[stream key]"
-re reads the file at its native playback rate, and -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. The bracketed encoding options depend on your media and chosen output settings; this is a command pattern, not a tested command for every file or Droplet. Confirm that the container and codecs are compatible with YouTube’s current ingest guidance, then check the preview and stream health before relying on the feed. If the source is already compatible and you choose to copy rather than encode, validate that path with the specific file and ingest requirements first.

Pick resolution and bitrate that the source can support and the server’s outbound connection can sustain. YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion similar to the intended broadcast and monitoring stream health during transmission. Its current encoder guidance recommends H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.

- KEEP YOUR PROCESSOR COOL: The busier a processor gets the more it heats up, leading to sub-optimal performance. To prevent this common issue, this kit includes an aluminum alloy case with a pre-installed fan. The aluminum alloy actively draws the heat from the pi board, while the fan further cools the board and case. These cooling mechanisms will help push the limits of your processor and increase its flexibility.
- SIZABLE RAM: This Raspberry Pi 4 comes equipped with 4GB of RAM, which is the same amount of RAM or more RAM than many mainstream laptops contain. With 4GB of RAM, your processor will be capable of running retro gaming setups and common computer applications, media players, and much more!
- SIMPLE TO TURN ON & OFF: This kit includes a USB-C Raspberry Pi 4 compatible power supply with an easy-to-use on/off switch that was designed specifically for the Raspberry Pi 4 model to streamline processing.
- IMPROVEMENTS FROM PREVIOUS MODELS: This latest model of the Raspberry Pi 4 offers groundbreaking increases in processor speed, multimedia performance, connectivity, memory, and more! The desktop performance of this model is comparable to entry-level x86 PC systems.
- VERSATILE USE: The Raspberry Pi may have a small processor, but it is a highly adaptable little computer that can replace your desktop PC. Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.
| Output example | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | Platform recommendation, not a guarantee of performance on a particular Droplet or connection. |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps | Platform recommendation, not a guarantee of performance on a particular Droplet or connection. |
These bitrate figures and the keyframe guidance come from YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026. They are platform recommendations and limits, not measurements of a DigitalOcean configuration. Match output to the source rather than upscaling poor-quality media, and test representative audio, motion, and playback duration. The encoder requirements can change, so consult YouTube’s guidance when configuring a new stream.
Make the stream restart after failures
A command running in an SSH session is not an unattended service: closing the session or rebooting can stop it. After a successful manual test, configure a process supervisor such as systemd to start the encoder at boot and restart it after an unexpected exit. Use a protected configuration for credentials, bounded or rotated logs, and monitoring or alerts. The DigitalOcean tutorial does not provide or validate a YouTube-specific systemd unit, so test your own service behavior before depending on it.

- CONVENIENT ACCESSORIES: The power supply features an inline on/off switch neoprene bag that holds and protects all the parts when not in use and the quick start guide is updated and written for Raspberry Pi 4
- Reboot the Droplet during a planned test and confirm the service starts and YouTube receives the feed again.
- Stop the encoder deliberately and confirm the supervisor restarts it as intended.
- Check logs and YouTube stream health, while ensuring logs do not reveal the stream key.
- Plan how you will update the media, maintain the operating system, and respond if the server or stream needs attention.
Automatic process restart only addresses the encoder process. It does not prevent network interruptions, server maintenance, YouTube ingest problems, or errors in the media itself.
Know what YouTube archives
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a broadcast longer than 12 hours will be saved as one complete, unlimited recording. If an archive is essential, check YouTube’s current behavior for your stream and arrange separate recording or file retention as appropriate. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Which approach fits your needs?
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Want uploaded videos to keep a YouTube channel live without administering a VPS. | Cloud service for uploaded-video streaming to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live production tool. See the cloud option below. |
| FFmpeg directly to YouTube Live | One server-side prerecorded file or playlist, with command-line control and minimal architecture. | Requires Linux setup, secure key handling, process supervision, and testing of media compatibility and server resources. |
| DigitalOcean SRS Marketplace stack | Need a media-server layer, protocol bridging, recording, transcoding, or restreaming features. | Adds another service and configuration layer, which is unnecessary for a simple direct FFmpeg push. DigitalOcean lists RTMP, SRT, HLS, WebRTC, FFmpeg transcoding, recording, and multi-platform restreaming for SRS. Its catalog can change; see DigitalOcean’s SRS listing. |
| Hosted continuous-streaming service | Prefer not to administer a VPS or process supervisor. | YouTube lists Gyre and Upstream as cloud options for 24/7 streaming. Check each service’s current pricing, availability, features, and terms before choosing; those details are not established here. |
| OBS on a desktop | Need live sources, a camera, or interactive scene switching. | It is a desktop-based approach, contrary to a server-only prerecorded loop. YouTube describes OBS as free and open source. |
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube shows no incoming video | Wrong server URL or key, FFmpeg stopped, or an invalid destination format. | Compare the protected configuration with the current YouTube stream settings, inspect FFmpeg’s error output without exposing the key, and check the Live Control Room preview. |
| Stream appears but health is poor | Bitrate exceeds available outbound capacity, settings do not suit the source, or the server is under load. | Review YouTube’s stream-health indicators; test with representative media; inspect server CPU, memory, and network use; reduce output demands if needed. |
| Audio or video is missing or incompatible | Source container or codecs do not match the chosen FFmpeg output or YouTube ingest requirements. | Inspect the file’s streams, adjust the encoding or passthrough choice, and test the result in YouTube’s preview before scheduling the broadcast. |
| Feed stops after SSH disconnect or reboot | FFmpeg was launched only in an interactive session or the supervisor is not enabled or configured correctly. | Run it under a boot-enabled process supervisor, then test both a reboot and a deliberate process exit. |
| Stream does not resume after YouTube drops it | The encoder exited or its retry behavior is insufficient for the interruption. | Inspect process and service logs, confirm the supervisor restarts an exited encoder, and verify whether the stream reconnects in Live Control Room. A restart policy is not a guarantee against every ingest interruption. |
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Having a file available to stream does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast it. Use media you created or are authorized to use, and review YouTube’s copyright and live-stream rules before scheduling a continuous loop. Repeated or prerecorded content should also meet YouTube’s applicable channel and monetization policies; a continuous stream does not by itself establish eligibility. You can use the copyright safety checklist as a preparation aid, but it does not replace YouTube’s rules or rights-holder permission.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want to maintain a Droplet, FFmpeg process, and restart policy, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping a channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it does not broadcast from a camera.
