For most Windows laptop owners, the most practical starting point is WSL 2 with Ubuntu, a project folder stored inside WSL, and an editor such as Visual Studio Code connected to that Linux environment. Add GPU acceleration only after confirming that your laptop’s GPU and chosen framework support the same route: Microsoft documents CUDA in WSL for NVIDIA GPUs and PyTorch with DirectML for supported AMD, Intel, and NVIDIA GPUs.
1. Update Windows and install WSL 2
WSL gives you a Linux development environment integrated with Windows, which is useful for machine-learning tools and workflows designed for Linux. Microsoft’s WSL development environment guide recommends installing it with a single command.

- Open PowerShell or Command Prompt.
- Run
wsl --install. - Restart Windows if prompted.
- When Ubuntu opens for the first time, create the Linux username and password it requests.
Microsoft says this installation enables WSL and Virtual Machine Platform, installs the current Linux kernel, sets WSL 2 as the default, and installs Ubuntu by default. If you prefer a different Linux distribution, select one using the current WSL installation guidance.

When Linux tools will work on a repository or dataset, store it in the Linux filesystem rather than keeping it on the Windows filesystem and accessing it across the boundary. Microsoft warns that cross-filesystem access can significantly reduce performance. This matters for repeated reads and writes during development, not just for where you place a final model.

Use the WSL terminal to create and work in a project directory in your Linux home folder. Windows files remain accessible from WSL when needed, but routinely working across filesystems is not the preferred arrangement for Linux tooling.
3. Connect an editor and version control
Microsoft recommends Visual Studio Code or Visual Studio for WSL development. With Visual Studio Code and its WSL extension configured, open the current WSL directory from the terminal with code .. The editor then works with files and tools in the Linux environment instead of treating the Windows copy as the project workspace.

Install and use Git for version control, and consider Windows Terminal for managing PowerShell and WSL sessions. These are useful development tools, not machine-learning prerequisites. Microsoft’s WSL setup guide covers editor, Git, and terminal setup.

4. Choose a GPU route that matches your hardware and framework
GPU setup is not one-size-fits-all. The right choice depends on the GPU vendor, the framework you plan to use, and whether you want a Linux-oriented workflow or native Windows. Microsoft’s GPU acceleration in WSL guidance describes these paths:

Microsoft recommends CUDA in WSL for professional data scientists who use a native Linux environment for day-to-day experimentation and have an NVIDIA GPU. That is a workflow-specific recommendation, not a requirement for every learner or every Windows laptop.
Microsoft marks TensorFlow with DirectML as discontinued and not actively worked on. Do not treat it as a current default path. For other framework and GPU combinations, verify current official support rather than assuming that a route listed for one framework works for another.

5. Set up CUDA in WSL only if you have an NVIDIA GPU
Microsoft’s CUDA on WSL 2 guide specifies a CUDA-enabled NVIDIA driver on Windows, WSL, and a glibc-based Linux distribution such as Ubuntu or Debian. The guide specifies WSL kernel version 5.10.43.3 or higher. Treat that as the prerequisite stated on that guide; check current NVIDIA and framework instructions as well, because compatibility requirements can change.

6. Create an isolated Python environment
Keep each project’s Python dependencies isolated in a virtual environment so that package changes for one project do not need to affect another. Microsoft’s GPU-accelerated ML training in WSL guide recommends a virtual Python environment and also documents Docker-based CUDA workflows.
Docker is optional: it can help with reproducible environments or deployment, but it is not a prerequisite for every learner or local project. The cited guidance does not establish a single current PyTorch install command or a version-specific framework compatibility matrix. Use the official installation instructions for your chosen framework and GPU path rather than copying old commands or pinned versions from dated examples.
7. Check storage and the workload before relying on local compute
Windows 11 compatibility requirements tell you whether a laptop meets Microsoft’s Windows requirements; they do not establish that it can train a particular model efficiently. Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications are not machine-learning performance recommendations. The cited guidance gives no universal machine-learning minimum for GPU memory, system RAM, or storage.

If storage is tight, an external drive may be useful for project or dataset files; Microsoft documents mounting external drives in WSL, but does not make one a standard requirement. Local compute is not the only option when a workload exceeds the laptop’s capacity, though no particular remote service is established here.
