Before you start
- Have a Wi-Fi connection ready. Some parts of Setup Assistant require internet, and an update may be required during initial setup.
- Connect the included power adapter and cable if the Mac needs charging or you are transferring data.
- If you plan to migrate, make the source device or backup available. You can also postpone migration and use Migration Assistant later.
Choose whether to transfer data
Setup Assistant lets you configure the Mac as new or transfer information from an iPhone or iPad, another Mac, a Time Machine backup, a startup disk, or a Windows PC. Apple’s Mac setup guide and new MacBook Air migration guidance describe these routes.

Complete Setup Assistant
- Turn on the MacBook Air and follow the on-screen prompts. Select your language and region, then connect to Wi-Fi when asked.
- Choose the setup or migration path that suits you. If transferring, follow the prompts to connect to the source device or select the backup or disk.
- Create the computer account and a login password. Choose a password you can remember and keep it private.
- Sign in to your Apple Account if you want Apple services and associated syncing on this Mac. You can skip sign-in if you prefer to do it later.
- Review accessibility and personalization prompts, including Location Services, Screen Time, Touch ID, and Siri. Touch ID is convenient for unlocking and authentication, but it does not replace protecting your account password.
Turn on FileVault and protect recovery access
MacBook Air models with Apple silicon or a T2 chip encrypt data automatically. FileVault adds an extra layer by requiring login credentials before data can be decrypted or accessed. To enable it, open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security > FileVault, then follow the prompts. The exact labels can vary by macOS version. See Apple’s FileVault guide.

Enable Find My Mac
Turn on Location Services and Find My in System Settings so you can locate, lock, or erase the Mac if it is lost. Adding the Mac to Find My also turns on Activation Lock. Apple’s Find My setup guide explains the controls and notes that location and finding features are not available in every country or region. The Find My network is optional.
Install macOS and keep security updates enabled
Use Software Update to install the latest macOS version compatible with your specific MacBook Air. Apple says updates improve security, stability, and compatibility. The screens differ by release:

- macOS Tahoe 26 or later: Open Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update. Background Security Improvements are controlled separately under Privacy & Security > Background Security Improvements.
- macOS Sequoia 15, Sonoma 14, or Ventura 13: In General > Software Update, keep Install Security Responses and system files enabled.
Background security improvements, security-configuration updates, and system data files install automatically by default. Some changes take effect only after a restart. Check Apple’s macOS update instructions for the path that matches your installed version.

The built-in firewall helps block unwanted incoming connections. On macOS 26, Apple places it at Apple menu > System Settings > Network > Firewall; consult Apple’s firewall guide if your version uses a different layout.

Enable the firewall, then review which sharing services are on and switch off those you do not use. Services such as file sharing open specific ports. Blocking an app can also disrupt that app or software that depends on it, so avoid treating every incoming connection as something that must always be blocked.

Use passkeys where supported
For websites and apps that support passkeys, iCloud Keychain can store them. Depending on the service and device, you can authenticate with Touch ID, a nearby iPhone or iPad, or an external security key. A separate security key is not required to secure the Mac itself. See Apple’s passkey guidance.

Set up a Time Machine backup
Apple describes using an external storage device with Time Machine and recommends backing up before upgrading macOS. You can connect an external hard drive or SSD and select it as the Time Machine backup destination in System Settings. An external drive is optional, but it gives you a local backup destination; Apple’s Time Machine guide walks through setup.
