How to Set Up a New Lenovo Yoga Tab and Transfer Your Data

Follow the Yoga Tab’s first-start wizard, then copy from an old Android device by cable or Wi-Fi—or restore a Google backup when the old device is unavailable. Learn what transfers, what does not, and how to copy remaining files safely.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safest way to set up a Lenovo Yoga Tab is to start the tablet’s on-screen setup, connect it to Wi-Fi, and choose Google’s transfer option while setup is still running. If your old Android device is available, copy directly by cable or wirelessly. If it is not available, restore whatever data exists in a Google Account backup.

Keep the old device until you have checked the content that matters. Android transfer is not a perfect clone: Google identifies several files, accounts, settings, and app data types that may not copy.

Before you turn on the new tablet

Set up the migration as a two-device task. You need the Yoga Tab, the old Android phone or tablet if you are copying directly, access to the Google Account used on the old device, and a reliable Wi-Fi connection. The exact screens depend on the Yoga Tab model and its Android version, so labels may differ slightly from the examples below.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Charge both devices. A transfer can take from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on how much data is moved. Avoid starting with either device nearly empty.
  • Make the old device usable. You must be able to unlock it. Google may ask for its screen lock during copying or backup restoration.
  • Connect to Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is needed for setup and is the recommended environment for both direct-transfer methods.
  • Check free space on the Yoga Tab. If the tablet cannot hold everything, the transfer screen may let you select what to copy.
  • Have the right connection available if you plan to use a cable. The cable must fit both devices and carry data, not merely charge. An adapter may be required. Do not buy a connector based only on the Yoga name; confirm the ports on your particular Yoga Tab and old device.

Google’s current Android guidance describes the process as moving data from an old Android device to a new Android device during setup: “When you set up your new device, you can move your data from your old Android device to your new Android device.” Google’s copy-apps-and-data guide is the authoritative reference for the transfer screens.

Complete the Yoga Tab’s initial setup

Turn on the tablet and follow each prompt rather than skipping ahead to the home screen. Lenovo describes these as common first-start stages for its Android tablets, although the wording and order can vary by model and Android release.

  1. Select language and region. Choose the language and regional settings you want the tablet to use.
  2. Review the license and privacy screens. Accept the terms required to continue.
  3. Join a Wi-Fi network. Select your network and enter its password. A stable connection helps the tablet check for updates, sign in to Google, and discover the transfer route.
  4. Confirm date and time. Automatic settings are normally appropriate when the tablet is online, but check the displayed values.
  5. Sign in to Google when prompted. Use the account you want associated with the tablet. If you intend to restore a backup, this must be the account that contains it.
  6. Review Google services. Choose the services and permissions shown by the setup wizard.
  7. Create a screen lock. Set a PIN, pattern, password, or another method offered by the tablet. The exact choices vary by model and Android version.

During this sequence, Android normally presents a screen for copying apps and data. That is the point at which you should select the route that matches your situation. Google warns that direct transfer may be offered only once during initial setup, so do not dismiss it casually.

Choose the transfer route

There are three practical paths. The first two copy directly from an old Android device; the third uses information that was previously backed up to your Google Account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Route Use it when What you need to know
Cable copy The old Android device is present and both devices can be connected. The cable must fit both devices and support data. An adapter may be needed. Start it from the transfer screen during setup.
Wireless copy The old Android device is present but you do not have a suitable cable. Wi-Fi and on-screen pairing are required. Keep both devices available until the copy finishes.
Google backup restore The old device is unavailable or direct copying is impractical. You need access to the Google Account and a backup that actually contains the data. Only available backed-up content can be restored.

Google documents cable and wireless copying as supporting the same categories of data. The meaningful difference is connection compatibility, not a separate set of transfer features. Backup restoration is different: its result is limited to what was stored in the account’s backup.

Transfer directly with a cable

Choose the cable option on the Yoga Tab’s copy screen when the old Android device is beside you.

  • IRMZ USB-C Data Cable Specifications: 10Gbps High-Speed Data Transfer, 3A Fast Charging, Innovative Braided Design, 3ft Length, White Color
  1. On the tablet, select the option to copy apps and data from an old device.
  2. Choose the wired or cable method when Android presents the choice.
  3. Connect the two devices with a data-capable cable. If the plugs do not match, use an appropriate adapter that supports data.
  4. Unlock the old device when asked and approve the connection or pairing prompt shown on it.
  5. Follow the tablet’s instructions to select the content to copy. If free space is limited, deselect items the transfer screen allows you to omit.
  6. Leave both devices connected and powered while the progress screen runs. Do not treat the tablet as ready merely because the home screen appears; let the transfer stage finish.

A “USB cable” that only charges is not enough. Google specifically notes that a cable may not fit both devices and that an adapter might be necessary, so verify the exact ports before purchasing a cable or adapter.

Transfer wirelessly

Wireless copying is the practical alternative when the old device is available but you cannot make a compatible wired connection.

  1. On the Yoga Tab’s transfer screen, choose the option to copy from an old Android device, then select wireless transfer.
  2. On the old device, follow the pairing instructions shown by the new tablet. Keep the old device unlocked while the devices establish contact.
  3. Confirm the pairing code or matching prompt if one appears.
  4. Select the apps and data offered for copying. Review the amount of content against the tablet’s available storage.
  5. Keep both devices near one another, connected to Wi-Fi and powered, until Android reports completion.

Google’s guidance recommends Wi-Fi and states that wireless and wired transfer support the same data. Wireless does not make excluded files or unsupported app data transferable; it only changes how the supported content reaches the tablet.

Restore from a Google Account backup

Use backup restore when the old device is lost, damaged, already returned, or otherwise unavailable.

  1. Continue the Yoga Tab setup until it asks whether you want to copy or restore data.
  2. Sign in with the Google Account that was used to create the old device’s backup.
  3. Select the backup offered for restoration. If more than one is listed, check the device name or date so you choose the intended one.
  4. Enter the old device’s screen lock if Android requests it.
  5. Review the data categories available and confirm the restore. The tablet will install or restore the items included in that backup as setup proceeds.

A Google Account is not a guarantee that every file or app state will reappear. Restoration cannot recover content that was never backed up or synced, and a service account other than Google may require its own sign-in and synchronization after setup.

What Android transfer usually includes

Google’s setup-transfer documentation lists the following categories as items that may copy. “May” matters: availability can depend on the device, Android version, backup state, and the app involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Category What Google says may transfer
Applications Apps and certain app data.
Personal media Music, photos and videos.
Contacts Contacts stored on the old device or its SIM card.
Messages Text messages and multimedia content in messages.
Device history and appearance Most settings, wallpaper and call history, with variation by device and Android version.

Use the transfer summary on the Yoga Tab as the final authority for the particular migration. A category listed by Google is not a promise that every item inside it will be present.

What will not copy through setup transfer

Google also identifies exclusions. Plan a separate method for anything in this list that you need.

Excluded or limited category Why it matters
Downloads, including PDFs Files in the old device’s Downloads area may not be included in the setup copy.
Media in hidden folders Photos or videos stored outside locations recognized by the transfer process may be missed.
Apps installed outside Google Play Sideloaded applications are not included in the same way as Play-installed apps.
Data from apps that do not use Android backup The app may install, but its private data may not come with it.
Non-Google accounts and their data Email, calendars or files tied to another provider normally require that provider’s own sign-in and sync.
Contacts and calendars synchronized to other services They may remain with the original service rather than appear in the Google restore.
Ringtones and certain settings Some customization and configuration items are specifically outside the setup transfer.

For these exclusions, keep the old device until you have opened the relevant service or copied the files separately. Do not factory-reset the old device immediately after the new tablet reaches its home screen.

Check the new Yoga Tab before retiring the old device

Verification is the point at which you discover omissions while the old device is still available to supply them.

  • Open Contacts and verify that key people are present, including contacts that were stored locally rather than synchronized.
  • Review the Messages app for recent conversations and multimedia messages.

  • Check call history, wallpaper and important system preferences if those items matter to your workflow.
  • Look in Downloads and other folders for documents that Google’s setup transfer excludes.
  • Confirm that the tablet has enough free space and that the apps you need have finished installing.

Only after these checks should you wipe, trade in or return the old device. If a particular account, file or app is missing, the old device may be your only remaining source.

If you skipped transfer or it did not finish

Android’s recovery choices are device- and version-dependent, so there is no single Lenovo Yoga Tab menu path that applies to every model.

Look for a delayed setup prompt

Google says some devices show a “Finish setting up” prompt after a few days. If it appears, open it and follow the offered transfer or restore steps. The prompt is not guaranteed on every Yoga Tab.

Use the model’s available post-setup options

Google’s troubleshooting guidance explains that later transfer choices vary by manufacturer and Android version. If the setup wizard no longer offers copying, check the tablet’s own help or settings for the option available on that model rather than following instructions written for a different Yoga generation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the basic transfer conditions

  • Make sure the old device is unlocked when the pairing or permission screen appears.
  • For a wired attempt, confirm that the cable and any adapter support data and fit both ports.
  • For a wireless attempt, reconnect both devices to Wi-Fi and keep them close and powered.
  • Check available storage before selecting a large transfer; the selection screen may allow you to reduce it.
  • If the old device is unavailable, stop looking for a direct-copy route and use the Google Account backup that actually exists.

Google’s transfer-troubleshooting page covers the current recovery guidance. It does not establish one universal post-setup procedure for all Android tablets.

Move files separately with a computer, SD card or network storage

Direct Android setup migration is for supported apps, data and settings; it is not a complete file-management solution. Lenovo’s general Android-tablet FAQ describes a separate computer backup workflow:

  1. Connect the Yoga Tab to a computer with a USB cable.
  2. On the tablet, choose File Transfer. Some models label the same mode Media device (MTP).
  3. Open the tablet in the computer’s file browser.
  4. Copy documents, photos, videos or other folders that you need to preserve.

The same Lenovo FAQ mentions an SD card or remote network backup as alternatives on models that support those features. These methods move files; they do not replace Android’s app, account and settings migration. You may still need to reinstall an app, sign in to a service, or export and import data using that app’s own tools.

Yoga Tab model differences to keep in mind

“Lenovo Yoga Tab” covers multiple generations with different ports, software and Android versions. The title alone does not identify a connector, recovery menu or exact setup wording. Confirm the model number in the tablet’s packaging or device information before buying accessories or following model-specific instructions.

Lenovo’s FAQ for the Yoga Tab Plus (TB520FU) says Lenovo Software Fix—formerly Rescue and Smart Assistant—includes functions for transferring files between tablets or phones and PCs. That statement applies to the TB520FU FAQ; it does not establish that the utility performs a full user-profile migration or that every Yoga Tab includes it. The same model-specific FAQ says Lenovo Vantage is preinstalled on that model, which should not be generalized to other Yoga tablets. See the Yoga Tab Plus (TB520FU) FAQ if that is your exact model.

How long the process takes and when to intervene

Google gives a practical range of a few minutes to a few hours, chiefly depending on transfer volume. A small contacts-and-settings transfer can finish quickly; a large media library can take much longer. The duration is not a published success statistic or a guarantee for a particular Yoga Tab.

Leave both devices connected to power and available until the transfer status reports completion. If the tablet appears usable but selected apps or media are still processing, wait for that work to finish before judging the result. Afterward, use the old device to fill the specific gaps identified during verification rather than repeatedly starting a full migration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final decision guide

  • Old Android device present and compatible ports available: choose cable transfer during initial setup.
  • Old Android device present but no suitable cable: choose wireless transfer over Wi-Fi during initial setup.
  • Old device unavailable: sign in to the Google Account containing the backup and restore only the data offered.
  • Important files are missing from all three routes: copy them separately through File Transfer/MTP, an SD card or supported network storage, and keep the old device until the copies are verified.

For Google’s complete current instructions, use Copy apps and data from an Android to a new Android device and Switch to a new Android device. The tablet’s model and Android version determine the labels you ultimately see.
