1. Unpack the IdeaPad and start Windows setup
Check the laptop and supplied power adapter for shipping damage, then connect the adapter for initial setup. Charger wattage and USB-C charging support are not consistent across all IdeaPad models; consult the documentation for your exact model rather than assuming another adapter or port is compatible.

Turn on the laptop and follow the Windows prompts. Set your language, region, and keyboard layout, connect to a trusted Wi-Fi network, and complete the account steps. Lenovo’s general Windows setup guidance describes using an existing Microsoft account or creating one during personal setup. It also says you can switch to a local account after initial setup. Review the privacy and sign-in options as they appear. You can set up Windows Hello if you want it and your IdeaPad has the required hardware; for example, face sign-in needs a suitable infrared camera, which is not present on every model.

2. Install Windows and Lenovo updates
Check Windows Update
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install the updates Windows offers.
- Restart if prompted, then check again for additional updates.
Check for Lenovo drivers and firmware
Next, use Lenovo Vantage or Lenovo System Update if available, or visit the support page for your exact IdeaPad model and check for drivers. Lenovo recommends installing critical and recommended updates and checking again until no more updates are offered. Vantage’s features and layout can vary by computer; Lenovo’s Vantage update guidance describes the general process.
To find the correct support page, search Lenovo Support by the IdeaPad model name or machine type. Use that page for model-specific driver, BIOS, charger, port, and recovery-button details.

3. Secure and personalize your laptop
Choose a sign-in method you can use reliably, and check that you know how to recover access to the account you chose. Review Windows privacy and security settings according to your preferences. Install needed apps from trusted sources and update apps from the Microsoft Store where applicable.
4. Back up files and move them from your old PC
Make a backup before changing the old computer
Before resetting, reinstalling, or otherwise changing your old PC, confirm that important files have a separate backup. Windows installation guidance recommends backing up first and identifies an external backup device as one option. An external SSD for backup can provide a separate physical copy, but buying a drive is not required to complete the new laptop’s setup. See Microsoft’s Windows installation guidance.

Use a current transfer method, not the retired PC-to-PC flow
Microsoft says its former PC-to-PC transfer experience is no longer available and directs users to Windows Backup and Restore. Check Microsoft’s current Windows Backup and Restore guidance for the options available to your Windows version and account, then verify that the files you need are present on the IdeaPad.
The retired transfer guide remains useful for understanding what that old process did not move: installed apps, saved passwords and credentials, OneDrive files, and files on BitLocker-encrypted drives. Do not rely on that discontinued feature to copy everything.

5. Connect accessories
Windows usually detects and installs new hardware automatically when you connect it, according to Microsoft Support. For a Bluetooth accessory that does not appear automatically, put it in pairing mode, then open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Add device and follow the prompts. Check your model’s specifications before buying a wired accessory if its connector requirements matter.

6. Prepare recovery options
After setup, consider creating a Windows recovery drive and storing it somewhere safe. Lenovo recommends making one after initial setup. Windows also offers recovery options such as Reset this PC and Startup Repair; the right procedure, including any Novo-button steps, depends on the IdeaPad model. Follow the instructions for your specific device in Lenovo’s Windows recovery guidance.

A clean Windows installation is not a routine setup step. Microsoft classifies it as an advanced option and warns that it removes personal files, installed apps, manufacturer customizations, and settings. Back up first and use it only when you have a specific reason to reinstall Windows.
Check the Windows version on an older or clearance IdeaPad
Do not assume every IdeaPad ships with Windows 11. Check the installed edition in Windows settings, especially if the laptop is older or was sold as clearance stock. Microsoft ended free Windows 10 updates, technical assistance, and security fixes on October 14, 2025. Review Microsoft’s Windows lifecycle information and confirm which support options apply to the device.
