How to Set Up a New Laptop for Software Development

A practical laptop setup guide for developers: choose a platform-specific workflow, install only the required toolchain, organize project files and test the setup.

Set up a development laptop around the platform and project you intend to build for—not a universal bundle of tools. Start by updating the operating system, choose the right command-line or native development path, then install only the compiler, SDK, runtime and package manager your project requires. Add an editor, terminal and Git, keep project files alongside the tools that work on them, and validate the setup with a small project.

1. Decide what you will build and where it must run

Before installing software, identify the project’s target: Windows, Linux, macOS or iOS, the web, or another platform. Check the project’s documentation and any team setup instructions for required operating systems, SDKs, compilers, runtimes and package managers. Compatibility with that toolchain matters more than installing a broad collection of languages you may never use.

Use these questions to choose your path:

  • What operating system or platform will the finished app run on?
  • Do the project instructions assume Windows tools, Linux commands, or a particular IDE?
  • Does the work require a full integrated development environment, or will command-line tools and a code editor do?
  • Where will your project files live relative to the tools that build and test them?

2. Update the operating system and choose its development path

Install available operating-system updates before setting up the toolchain. Then follow the supported development path for your laptop’s platform; setup steps and supported versions can change, so use the current official instructions for your OS.

Windows: native development, WSL, or both

Choose native Windows tools when your project targets Windows or depends on Windows-native tooling. Choose Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) when the project expects Linux commands, packages, or a Linux development environment. They are not mutually exclusive: a laptop can support both workflows, but each project should have a clear primary environment.

To start with WSL, follow Microsoft’s current WSL development environment setup guide. It covers enabling WSL, installing a Linux distribution and updating its packages, along with terminal, editor, Git and optional development components. Microsoft describes wsl --install as a simple starting point, but prerequisites depend on Windows version and configuration; check the current guide rather than assuming one command works on every laptop.

For a Windows-native workflow, install the tools required by the project’s target and instructions. Microsoft distinguishes Visual Studio, commonly used for native Windows app development, from Visual Studio Code, a cross-platform editor with an extension ecosystem. These are workflow examples, not the only suitable editors or IDEs. Microsoft’s Windows development environment guidance explains the distinction and related settings.

macOS: Command Line Tools or full Xcode

For many command-line development tasks on a Mac, Apple’s Command Line Tools package is enough. Apple says it includes the macOS SDK, manual pages and toolchain binaries also shipped with Xcode. On a fresh macOS installation, running a command such as git may prompt you to install the tools.

Check Apple’s current Command Line Tools documentation and release table for current versions and installation details.

Linux: follow your distribution’s documentation

Linux setup varies by distribution and release. Use the chosen distribution’s official guidance for system updates, repositories, compilers, security settings and supported drivers rather than treating instructions for another distribution as universal. Install and update Git through that distribution’s package manager; Microsoft’s Git installation and setup guidance describes platform-specific approaches.

3. Keep project files with the tools that use them

Microsoft’s guidance is direct: “Store your project files on the same operating system as the tools you plan to use.” For Linux command-line tools in WSL, keep active project files in the WSL file system. For Windows tools, use Windows storage. A cross-boundary setup can work, but Microsoft warns that accessing files across the boundary can significantly slow performance. See its WSL file-storage guidance.

This rule is especially useful if you use both environments: choose whether a project belongs to the Windows or Linux workflow, then store it on that side and use the corresponding tools. Avoid editing or building the same working tree from competing environments unless the project’s instructions specifically require it.

4. Install the project toolchain, not every toolchain

Install the compiler, SDK, language runtime and package manager named by your project’s documentation. A web project, an iOS app and a Windows desktop program can require very different tools; there is no universal list of runtimes that every developer should install.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Read the project’s prerequisites and record the required versions or version ranges.
  2. Confirm that those tools support your operating system and target platform.
  3. Install the required toolchain using its official instructions, then check that its commands are available in the terminal.
  4. Use the project’s documented commands to install dependencies and build or run it; don’t substitute an unrelated global setup.

5. Add an editor, terminal and Git

Choose an editor or IDE and a terminal

Use the editor or IDE that fits the project’s framework, platform and team workflow. Cross-platform editing and platform-specific app development can call for different tools. On Windows with WSL, Microsoft’s setup guidance covers Visual Studio Code or Visual Studio and Windows Terminal; use the editor integration and terminal configuration appropriate to the environment where the project lives.

Install Git and configure repository access

Git is a baseline tool for working with most shared code projects. Install it using the supported method for your operating system, then configure your identity and the authentication method required by your code-hosting provider. Authentication details can change, so follow that provider’s current instructions. Microsoft’s Git setup guide covers installation approaches and setup considerations, including credential management, ignore files and line endings.

Before committing, check that generated files, local settings and credentials are not being added to the repository. Use the project’s ignore rules and never commit secrets such as access tokens or private keys.

6. Add optional tools only when the work needs them

Do not treat infrastructure as part of every laptop’s minimum setup. Add it when a project’s instructions or a real development task calls for it:

Microsoft’s WSL setup guide treats containers, databases, GPU acceleration, external-drive mounting and GUI apps as additional topics rather than prerequisites for every user.

7. Validate the setup with a small project

Before moving your main work onto the laptop, use a small project or a repository you trust to check that the components work together. Follow that project’s documented setup and validation commands.

  1. Open the project from the environment where its files are stored.
  2. Run its documented dependency-install and build or test commands in the matching terminal.
  3. Confirm the editor can open the project and use the expected language or SDK tools.
  4. Check that Git reports the expected identity and can authenticate to the repository host if a remote is involved.
  5. Resolve errors by checking the project’s required versions and official setup instructions before adding unrelated tools.
