Start by connecting your new laptop to power and reliable Wi-Fi, then follow its setup assistant to choose your account and decide whether to transfer files or start fresh. Once you reach the desktop, install system updates, review security and recovery access, install only the apps you need, and configure a backup. Windows and Mac offer different setup and migration paths, and some choices depend on your device, account, region, and operating-system version.
Before you turn on your new laptop
A few details at hand can make setup smoother and help prevent a rushed migration choice.

- Find your Wi-Fi name and password, plus the sign-in and recovery details for the account you intend to use.
- If you plan to move data, keep the old computer charged and accessible. Decide which folders, browser data, settings, and apps you actually need.
- If you have an existing backup, check which account it uses and whether it contains the files you want. For a Mac, some parts of Setup Assistant require an internet connection, and an initial update may be needed.
- For a wired transfer or local backup, check that the storage device’s connector works with the new laptop; an adapter may be needed.
Complete the first-run setup
Power on the laptop, connect it to power, and follow the prompts for language, region, keyboard, network, account, and accessibility. Screen names and options vary by model, OS version, account type, and region, so use the choices shown on your device rather than assuming every laptop presents the same screens.

On a Mac
Apple’s Setup Assistant guides you through network connection, accessibility, migration, account creation, and additional settings. You can choose to migrate from another Mac, a Time Machine backup, a startup disk, or a Windows PC—or set up the Mac as new. Review optional services and settings before enabling them. For current, model-specific steps, see Apple’s Mac setup guide.

On Windows
Windows setup includes account and restore choices. Read each prompt before accepting optional settings or services, and decide whether to restore supported content or configure the laptop as a fresh PC. Windows Backup’s availability and what it can restore depend on the Windows version, account, region, and available storage. Microsoft describes its options in Windows Backup: back up and restore.
Choose how to move files and settings
There is no single best transfer method for every laptop. Choose based on the source device, the amount of data, internet access, account and cloud-storage requirements, and whether you want settings and app links or only selected files.

| Transfer route | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Backup | Moving supported content to a Windows PC using the same Microsoft account. | Microsoft says it can restore supported files and settings during setup; Microsoft Store apps may be available to reinstall. In its transfer guide, Microsoft says 5 GB of OneDrive storage is included and that transfers above that amount require an active subscription or trial. Availability and storage terms can change, so check your account and current offer. Some apps must be reinstalled from their original providers. Microsoft’s PC transfer guide is US-focused and notes regional variation. |
| Mac Setup Assistant migration | Moving from another Mac, a Time Machine backup, startup disk, or Windows PC to a Mac. | Setup Assistant offers these migration choices or a clean setup. The exact procedure depends on the source device and OS version; follow Apple’s Mac setup guide. |
| External storage or manual copying | Moving selected folders, handling large amounts of data, or transferring without relying on a cloud upload. | Microsoft identifies external drives and USB drives as practical options for large folders and offline transfers. Confirm the drive’s compatibility and that the destination has enough space. This method does not automatically recreate every app or setting. See Microsoft’s transfer guidance. |
| Cloud storage or another cloud transfer | Files you want available across devices, when internet access and account storage suit the move. | Account and storage requirements differ by service. Confirm what has actually synced before relying on it as your only copy. For Windows backup choices, see Microsoft’s backup-solution guide. |
Do not assume that “transfer” means every program will be ready to use. Microsoft notes that some apps require manual reinstallation from the original app provider. After setup, open important folders and launch the apps you rely on. Keep the old computer until you have checked what matters; Microsoft also recommends verifying key folders and apps before retiring the old PC.
Install system updates
Once you reach the desktop, open the operating system’s built-in update page, install available updates, and restart when prompted. Check again afterward if the system indicates that more updates are available. On Windows, Windows Update is the normal route for updates and eligible upgrades; availability can depend on compatibility and device readiness. Do not bypass compatibility requirements. Microsoft’s current installation guidance is at Ways to install Windows 11. On a Mac, use the built-in macOS update flow available for your version and device.

Windows security
Open Windows Security > Device Security and review the status shown for Secure Boot, core isolation, the security processor, and data encryption. Which items appear depends on the hardware and configuration; a missing option does not, by itself, mean that a feature should be forced on.

If disk encryption or BitLocker is enabled, make sure you can access its recovery information somewhere other than the laptop. Microsoft says a BitLocker recovery key is needed for most Windows Recovery Environment options. Before a recovery or reset action, back up important files. See Microsoft’s Device Security guide and Windows recovery options.
Mac security
Use a strong account password and review the privacy and security settings available in your version of macOS. Do not assume a particular encryption setting was enabled during initial setup: settings and availability can vary by device and OS version.

Install only the apps you need
Get software from its original publisher or the platform’s official store. Install the apps you recognize and use, and skip unfamiliar programs or bundled extras you do not need. For apps that did not migrate, use the publisher’s official download or store listing rather than an unverified download site.
Set up and verify a backup
Choose a backup approach that fits your internet access, data volume, and need to reach files on other devices. Cloud backup can be convenient for cross-device access, subject to account and storage limits. External storage can suit large collections or offline use; it is an option, not a requirement for every laptop.
On a Mac, Time Machine can back up apps, accounts, settings, and personal files to supported external or other supported storage. Apple explains the process in its Mac backup guide. For Windows, compare cloud and local options using Microsoft’s backup-solution guide.
Quick Recap
- Choose the files and settings you cannot afford to lose, and select a backup destination with enough space.
- Follow the built-in backup setup for your OS or chosen storage method.
- Wait for the first backup to finish, then check that the expected files are visible in the backup or service.
Final checks before you retire the old computer
- Open important folders on the new laptop and confirm that the expected files are present.
- Launch frequently used apps and sign in where required; reinstall anything that did not transfer.
- Confirm that your backup has completed and that you can see the files it is meant to protect.
- Keep the previous device until these checks are complete. Only then decide whether to erase, trade in, or recycle it.
