How to Set Up a New iPhone and Transfer Data from Android

Choose From Android during iPhone setup to migrate supported data with Move to iOS or an eligible app-free pairing option. See what transfers and what to move manually.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To move Android data with Apple’s automated migration, start the new iPhone’s setup and choose Transfer Your Apps & Data > From Android. Use Apple’s Move to iOS app, or choose the app-free QR pairing option if your Android phone and software support it. If you have already finished setting up the iPhone, the automated route requires erasing it and starting over; you can instead move supported content manually.

Before you begin

  • Connect both phones to power, turn on Wi-Fi on the Android phone, and keep the devices close together during migration. A direct USB-C connection is another option and Apple describes it as faster, but use it only with compatible ports and a cable that supports data transfer.
  • Check that the Android content you want to move, including content on an external Micro SD card, will fit in the iPhone’s available storage.
  • If you want Chrome bookmarks, update Chrome on Android before starting.
  • Be ready to activate cellular service or an eSIM. You may need to follow a carrier prompt or contact your carrier.
  • If the iPhone has already been set up, decide whether you are willing to erase it and repeat setup. Otherwise, use Apple’s manual migration guide.

How to transfer Android data during iPhone setup

  1. Turn on the new iPhone and follow its setup prompts. If Quick Start asks you to use another Apple device, choose Set Up Without Another [Apple] Device.
  2. At Transfer Your Apps & Data, tap From Android. Choose the app-based route or the app-free option if it appears and your Android device supports it.
  3. For Move to iOS, open the app on Android, accept its terms, and follow its permission prompts. Continue on the iPhone until it displays a one-time code, then enter that code on Android. The Android phone will join a temporary Wi-Fi network created by the iPhone. If you connect by cable and Android displays a USB prompt, adjust its USB settings as needed.
  4. Select the content to transfer. Keep Move to iOS open on Android, keep the phones near each other and connected to power, and wait for the iPhone’s loading bar to finish—even if Android says it is done. Apple says the transfer can take a while depending on how much content you are moving, but does not give a general duration.
  5. Complete iPhone setup. Check that the expected content arrived, then download any matched free apps from the App Store.

Choose between app-based and app-free transfer

Route What you need Pairing
Move to iOS app An Android device that can use the app; follow the iPhone’s setup prompts. Enter the one-time code shown on iPhone, then join the temporary Wi-Fi network.
Transfer without the app A supported Android device running a compatible version of Android 17 or later. Availability depends on device manufacturer and support. Scan the QR code shown during iPhone setup; if scanning fails, use the displayed session ID or pairing code.

Both routes are part of initial iPhone setup. Choosing a different pairing method does not change which kinds of content need to be moved manually.

What transfers—and what does not transfer automatically

Apple lists these categories for transfer: contacts; message history and SMS messages; camera photos and videos; photo albums; files and folders; accessibility and display settings; web bookmarks; mail accounts; WhatsApp messages and media; Voice Memos; call history; and calendars.

Some free apps may be matched when they are available on both Google Play and the App Store and support the transfer feature. You can download matched apps from the App Store after migration. This does not mean every app or its private data will be copied as a perfect mirror.

Can I move my WhatsApp chats?

Can I transfer data after I already set up the iPhone?

Apple’s automated Android migration is offered during initial iPhone setup. To use it after completing setup, erase the iPhone and start over. If you do not want to erase it, use manual migration for the content you need; Apple’s manual guide explains how to move or reconnect supported categories individually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will my SIM or eSIM transfer?

During setup, the iPhone may prompt you to activate your phone number and SIM or eSIM, and may direct you to your carrier. Moving an eSIM from a non-Apple phone can require carrier activation or a carrier-provided QR code, depending on the carrier and device. Follow the iPhone’s prompt; if transfer is not offered, ask your carrier what activation method it supports. Apple’s eSIM transfer guide describes this carrier-dependent process.

Why is Move to iOS stuck or incomplete?

Apple’s key instruction is: “Make sure that you leave both devices alone until the transfer finishes.” Do not use the Android phone or answer a call while migration is underway. If it stops or appears not to progress, try these steps:
